Decorative painting of a wall in a room. How to paint walls in two colors in an original way? Design options for different rooms with painted walls

Wall decoration is one of the most important stages of renovation in an apartment, because they are the ones that immediately catch your eye. I want the home to have an atmosphere of comfort and beauty, and at the same time, so that the repair costs do not exceed the budget. One of the most simple solutions finishing - painting the walls. Anyone can do the work themselves, but still, it’s worth knowing a few rules of technology. We will look at how to paint walls correctly in this article.

Paint can be used both for decorative finishing and for surface protection. They differ in their composition:

  1. Emulsion
  2. Alkyd
  3. Adhesive
  4. Silicate
  5. Polyurethane

Emulsion paints some of the best. Are different high performance: their consumption is kept to a minimum, they are harmless and odorless, and dry quickly. But they can only be used in heated rooms. There are several types:

Acrylic. They are pricey, but they are worth every penny spent. Acrylic paints are durable and not afraid of light. However, they are not used in rooms with high humidity; despite the fact that they repel water, they are still afraid of it.

Latex. The most expensive. Due to the latex content, the paint dries very quickly. It can be applied to wallpaper or bare walls. Masks minor surface imperfections. But this type is less resistant to light.

Water-based. Dries almost instantly. Very durable, mask small cracks and have a huge variety of choices. They are not afraid of water, but if washed too often, the coating may lose its appearance.

Water-dispersed. The main advantage is moisture resistance. Can be used to cover wet areas. Most often they are produced in white, which means they will have to be diluted with color. They are afraid of cold rooms.

Silicone. Due to the silicone content, this type of paint is the most elastic. They can be applied to cracks, to any coating, even with old finishes. The downside is that it takes a long time to dry.

Alkyd paints There are two types: oil and enamel. The paint will emit an odor for some time after application. They cannot be washed and they support combustion. They are rarely used indoors living rooms because of harmfulness.

Oil-based alkyd paints They emit a toxic substance during operation, but are very cheap. They take a very long time to dry. Enamel ones dry much faster and will not fade during use.

Adhesive paints afraid of water. They are more suitable for ceilings than for walls, because they are not recommended to be washed frequently and can fade in the sun. But they are much cheaper than many other types.

Silicate paints They will last for many years, but they contain alkali, which increases the risk of damage during operation. Not suitable for all types of surfaces and do not come into contact with other types of paints.

Polyurethane paints rarely used due to their cost. But they are worth the money. They are not afraid of light, temperature changes and chemicals. They will last a very long time. They are most often used to paint a bathtub or kitchen, since such a coating can withstand all conditions.

In addition to composition, paints are also distinguished by texture. There are relief ones - the surface will not be smooth, but with roughness. Decorative ones create imitation natural materials. Matte paints difficult to clean, so they are used in living rooms or bedrooms. The glossy surface is suitable for finishing baths and kitchens as it is easy to clean.

What paint to paint the walls

The paint must have the following characteristics:

  1. Safety
  2. Durability
  3. Easy to care for
  4. Wear resistance

What paint is best to paint walls? Safety is the first criterion when choosing paint. A wide selection of compositions allows you not to fix your gaze on only one specific type. Don't be afraid to ask for quality certificates. Always check the composition, it should not contain toxic substances above the permissible limit. Some substances can be harmful not only during operation, but even after drying. Don't skimp on yourself and buy quality products.

According to its characteristics, the paint must have high characteristics so that its service life is not short. One of the most important conditions— resistance to mechanical damage. Of course, no species can withstand a strong blow, but it should not endure much damage. Otherwise it will start to crumble. Paint should not be afraid of light. Then it will not fade or fade and will serve you for many years.

Choose waterproof paints. At first glance, this condition seems decisive only when painting walls in damp rooms. But if the paint does not like water, then it is not recommended to wash it. And to do only dry cleaning is just to drive away dust. You will have to clean such a surface carefully, and if stains appear, you are unlikely to remove them. In addition, moisture-resistant types have higher characteristics, so it is better to buy them.

If you are wondering how to paint the walls in a room with your own hands, then another selection criterion is drying time. The paint is applied in several layers; if it dries for a long time, the repair may take longer. Therefore, purchase paints that dry quickly enough.

woman paint on wall

The more expensive the paint, the better it is. But not everyone is ready to spend money. In fact, by purchasing cheap paints, you may not save money, the point here is in expense. Manufacturers indicate how much paint is required. Low-quality and cheap paint quickly absorbs into the walls, and sometimes it even needs to be applied in three or four layers before it takes on the desired look. Therefore, pay attention to the manufacturers' instructions on material consumption.

Required Tools

Painting does not require a huge range of tools. All you need is a paint tray, a brush and a roller. The brush is used to get into hard-to-reach places, so take one wide and one narrow.
A short-nap roller is used when painting smooth walls. Medium-length pile is suitable for textured and rough, matte coatings. If you have textured walls, then the pile is long.

Preparing the wall surface

How to paint the walls in an apartment correctly? Before you start working directly, you should carefully prepare the walls. The accuracy and beauty of the paint application will depend on how carefully you treat the walls. The preparation process consists of several stages:

  1. Preparing the room
  2. Surface cleaning
  3. Removing cracks and irregularities
  4. Primer

Working with paint is dirty; if you accidentally swing a brush or roller, the stains can spread throughout the room. Therefore, block off the entire space with film. Turn off the electricity, just in case you accidentally touch an outlet, you will be safe. The joints between the floor and walls can be sealed with masking tape. Do the same with the sockets.

The surface of the walls must be thoroughly washed. Remove any existing stains, mildew or mold. You can use vinegar or ammonia. Also get rid of the old coating, if any. If you bought paint that can be applied to other types of finishes, make sure that old layer It holds well, does not fall off anywhere, does not peel. Otherwise, you need to get rid of these shortcomings. Old paint from walls can be removed with a special compound, which is sold at a hardware store. If you had wallpaper before, remove it with a spatula and warm soapy water.

Primer required type work, you can’t skip it. It will protect your walls from the formation of fungus and mold. It will make the surface smoother, so your paint will not be absorbed into the base coating, and this will significantly save consumption. It is best to apply two layers. If your base coat is made of concrete, you can apply all three layers. Concrete is very absorbent, so let it absorb the primer rather than the paint. After priming, get rid of large cracks and holes.

DIY wall painting

If you have White paint and color, then first you need to dilute them. Try diluting in a small container to desired color. Remember the proportions and transfer them to the bucket.

How to paint walls yourself:

One surface should be painted at once. Under no circumstances leave a wall painted only halfway for a long time; this will lead to the border at the junction being visible to the naked eye.

Using a roller, paint the entire surface from top to bottom. You cannot work from below, as smudges will subsequently form, which you will not be able to get rid of later.

After covering the surface, use a brush to paint hard-to-reach places and corners. After applying the first layer, you need to wait until it dries completely. The drying time is indicated on the packaging, but it’s better to check with your hand somewhere in the corner to see if the surface is sticky. Then proceed to the next layer. During the drying process, ensure compliance with the temperature conditions specified in the instructions. It is better to avoid direct exposure to light during the drying period.

Wall decoration is an essential stage in the design of a room. Today we will take a closer look at the option of decorating a wall – painting. This is a popular and sought-after way to update and diversify the interior.

Painting walls in the interior gives scope for creativity and imagination. The variety of colors on store shelves allows you to realize design ideas and make your dream interior come true. Right choice material is important, since the final result will depend on it. To begin the painting process, the materials offered in stores are studied and suitable ones are selected.

Characteristics of paints that are important to know:

  • To paint indoors, you only need interior paints, the packaging of which is marked “for interior use.”
  • The way paint interacts with water affects its use in various rooms: rooms with high humidity (bathroom, kitchen) need moisture-resistant paint. For other rooms, where there is no dampness and moisture, you can use non-moisture resistant paints.
  • All coloring materials are also divided into two groups: breathable and non-breathable. Vapor-proof (non-breathable) paints should be chosen only for rooms where you plan to spend little time. The walls in the bedroom, for example, are painted only with vapor-permeable paint. This is the key to healthy circulation and air renewal.
  • Wear resistance. This is an important indicator of paint, which shows the degree of its resistance to abrasion. For example, if you plan to frequently wet-clean walls, then the paint should be wear-resistant.
  • Hiding power, that is, the ability of paint to cover a surface. This directly affects its consumption. The hiding power on the can indicates how much of this paint is needed to cover 1 square meter surfaces.

Kinds

All these parameters must be taken into account when choosing to get the desired result. However, that's not all. The paints themselves are divided into types, all the advantages and disadvantages of which we will now analyze.

Acrylic water-based paint

This dye is one of the most popular and in demand. It is based on polyacrylate resins.

Advantages: excellent coverage, easy to apply, unlimited opportunity in tinting. The constant advantage of paint will be its low cost. Does not fade, moisture-resistant, wear-resistant. Has no unpleasant odor and is non-toxic. Also, one of the advantages of the paint is that it is easy to use and is suitable even for those who have not picked up a brush.

Disadvantages: high consumption. When using this type of paint, it is often necessary to apply more than one or even two layers of paint to achieve the desired result. Minus of paint and what is affected sun rays. Also, this paint does not resist the effects of fungus and mold.

Silicone paint

These paints got their name because of the silicone resins they contain. These coatings belong to a new generation of paints that have the advantages of water-dispersed and silicate coloring materials and the shortcomings have been eliminated. Most often used in facade work.

The advantages of silicone paint are that it is vapor permeable and waterproof. It is resistant to sunlight, does not fade, and is not afraid of high temperatures. Resistant to alkali and stains. The scope of application of silicone paint is almost unlimited due to its excellent performance properties, durability and variety of decorative options.

The disadvantages of silicone dyes include high cost. When used on large area, this paint is quite expensive. But here it is also taken into account that the durability of this paint, its strength and resistance to damage, will very quickly pay for all investments.

Latex paint

This dye is water-based and contains latex. The paint is known for its high wear resistance.

The advantages of latex paint are moisture resistance and durability. The surface can be exposed wet cleaning without damaging the coating. This paint is universal: it is applicable to concrete, wood and paper. Latex paint coating looks impressive and can decorate the interior. The paint is non-toxic, vapor permeable, has excellent thermal insulation properties, is very economical in consumption and dries quickly.

One of the disadvantages is that the walls need to be perfectly smooth before painting. Latex paint absolutely matches the entire surface of the wall. Also, the paint is not resistant to temperatures below zero. There should not be strong temperature changes in the room where such paint will be painted, otherwise there is no point in using it. The high cost can also be a deterrent, but as with silicone paint, it will be a worthwhile investment in the longevity and durability of the coating.

Vinyl paint

It was created on the basis of vinyl compounds and was practically forced out of the market by acrylic paints.
The advantages of vinyl paint are its low cost. This coating does not turn yellow, its decorating ability is sufficient high level. Resistant to solvents and chemicals. Eco-friendly: approved for painting walls and ceilings in children's rooms.

There are quite a few disadvantages: strong shrinkage when drying, which often requires a second coat of paint. The paint has proven itself to be not very durable. Disadvantages include low vapor permeability.

A dye that is made on the basis of PVA. Suitable for interior decoration. A budget option. A definite plus is the affordable price.

The downside is that for painting indoors, there must be favorable conditions, without temperature changes and with perfectly leveled surfaces. The paint is not wear-resistant, so don't expect miracles from it.

Acrylic latex paint

Contains the qualities of latex dyes. Wear resistance, long-term operation without loss in protective properties and decorative qualities.

Structural paint

The viscosity of this material allows the paint to maintain the relief specified during application.
There are many advantages of the coating: from non-toxicity and odorlessness to the ability to create a unique relief pattern with different degrees of roughness on given surface. The paint is waterproof, washes well, and can mask surface imperfections. Very durable.

The only disadvantage worth mentioning is the fairly high cost.

The quality of the paint and operating conditions are what should worry you when choosing a dye. You should not overpay for the brand or for minor improvements, with the help of which manufacturers often inflate the price. You can always find a quality product that fits your budget. Contact your sales consultant.

Preparing the walls

Preparing the walls is perhaps one of the most important stages. To begin with, it is worth removing all previous coatings. All roughness, cracks and irregularities are carefully rubbed down. A smooth surface is the key to an excellent result after painting. After leveling, the surface must be cleaned of dust. A brush, a soft cloth and a vacuum cleaner - any of these items will do the job.

The next step is primer. This is necessary in order to fill minor surface defects and strengthen the adhesion of the wall and paint. Acrylic primer is very popular. It is great for any surface. For priming walls and interior partition You can use several equipment options: roller, spray or wide brush. After the primer is applied, it must be left until completely dry. It will take about 5-6 hours.

After the soil has dried, puttying is performed. To apply the first layer, you should use a starting putty. It exists both in a ready-made version and in the form of a dry mixture. The first layer is applied over the painting mesh, which consists of fiberglass. After the plaster has dried, it is rubbed down using a special device. Then you need to apply a layer of finishing putty, which is also rubbed off after drying.

Acrylic primer not only enhances adhesion, but also has antibacterial properties that prevent fungi and mold from growing on the wall.

Which color to choose?

The choice of color has a strong impact on the interior as a whole. Two different shades of the same color can both ruin and decorate a room. When choosing a color scheme, you need to take into account the lighting, the desired color of furniture and textiles, and the mood you want to create in the room.

Neutral colors always look win-win in a home interior: yellow, coffee, apricot. It is quite easy to choose an interior for them and these colors have a beneficial and calming effect on the psyche. Bright wall colors will require more attention and effort to match them with a suitable environment. Designers advise not to use more than five colors in one room.

Trendy colors in the interior

Fashion comes and goes, dictating its own rules, including in the interior. The most important thing is that the environment is ideal for you. Let's look at what colors are relevant today:

  • White color immediately evokes the idea of purity. White is an invariable lifesaver if you need to increase and expand the space. Recommended for small and dark spaces.
  • Black, on the contrary, reduces space. In poor lighting, this color can turn a room into a very dark and gloomy one. Designers advise diluting black with glossy or mirror surfaces.
  • Grey. This color is often associated with the backdrop for very expensive items in interior settings. It should not be made the main color of the room, because it is quite boring in itself. Light gray color with the addition of various color spots in the decor will perfectly decorate the interior, give comfort and renewal to the room.
  • The color red is known to stimulate appetite and increase blood pressure. Use with caution in residential areas, especially in children's rooms. If you use it as the main color in a room, it will create an oppressive impression. It is used as an additional accent, especially in cool-colored interiors. This will make the room cozy.
  • Yellow affects intellectual development, so it is suitable for a child's bedroom. This color is also used in rooms located on the north side.
  • Orange color has the ability to harmonize the atmosphere in a room. This color is conducive to communication, so it is perfect, for example, for a living room. You need to act with orange just as carefully as with red. You should not make it the main color in the room, as it can quickly get boring.
  • Brown color, especially its light tones, is considered classic example colors in the interior. Beige, peach, and coffee shades are ideally combined with it. Noble color that creates comfort.
  • Blue color gives a feeling of peace and relaxation. This color reduces appetite and induces a wave of relaxation. Ideal for the bedroom. A light shade of blue can expand the space.
  • The color purple, especially its dark shades, can make you feel tired. Its use in the interior should be approached with caution.
  • Green color is considered beneficial both for the eyes and for mental balance. Green is available in both warm and cold colors. It is believed that this color helps to concentrate, so it is often used for work rooms. Designers often use pistachio and olive colors in their solutions: they are considered successful for the interior. TO green walls It’s not always easy to choose furniture, so think through everything in advance if you are going to use this color.

Combining colors and methods of applying paint

Combining colors is not as easy as it seems. For bright spots in the interior, you should use a neutral and calm tone. Also, a combination of related colors is always considered successful. Combine different shades of the same color and get harmonious interior.
Let's consider the main methods of applying paint when combining colors:

Horizontal division

This is a visual division of the wall into two horizontal stripes: It becomes two-color. The most commonly used proportions are one to one or two to one. The upper stripe is painted in a dark tone, the lower one is made lighter. To clearly separate the stripes, it is permissible to use molding.

Colored inserts

A design with colored inserts may be suitable, for example, for a children's room. The basis is a neutral shade: beige, white. A drawing is made against this background: geometric shapes, which are then painted over with bright colors.

Accents

It’s worth mentioning right away that furniture in the interior can also be an accent. If you want to pay attention and focus on the bright design of the walls, then it is better to choose one or two walls and paint them in a rich shade. Leave the rest in neutral colors so as not to overdo it with accents.

Gradient and ombre

The idea of making a gradient on the walls is considered one of the most popular in interior design. This painting method is obtained when different shades of the same color are applied to each wall surface or individual part of it.

The method of painting ombre is that the shade on one wall of the room changes in a horizontal or vertical direction. To get the entire range of shades of one color on the wall, you must first paint the surface in the lightest available shade. Then the wall is divided into quarters and the lowest quarter should be painted in the darkest shade.

The next step is to mix a dark shade with a small amount of light and paint the part of the surface above the dark piece. In this case, you need to step a little onto the dark surface. In the very center, the most saturated and bright color, smoothly smoothing it towards the light part, which is at the top.

Horizontal and vertical stripes

This design move can be performed in the most various options. If the house has low ceilings, then this can be corrected with the help of narrow vertical stripes. This visually elongates the walls and increases the height. To expand the space, you can paint a wide horizontal stripe on the wall. It is usually decorated various items interior: lamps and paintings.

Ornament

This method involves covering the wall surface with various images of figures. To greatly simplify the work, use a stencil, which you can either make yourself or buy. ready-made option in a hardware store.

Geometric shapes

To create the desired style in an apartment, you need to apply geometric shapes to the walls. Diamonds, polka dots, squares are a few examples for decoration. This method of painting walls requires a considerable amount of patience, because applying the design by hand will take a lot of time and effort.

The textured method of painting is to result in a surface with a unique structure. This can be achieved most different ways. The stores now have all the materials needed to implement this idea. This method perfectly masks surface unevenness.

This finishing method is suitable even for beginners. The wall should be painted with thick paint, which will not dry immediately, but will give time to create a unique design on it. To do this, immediately after painting, take a crumpled piece of paper or a polyethylene bag and blot the entire painted wall, each time stepping on the previous print.

To implement this idea, we will need a regular sponge or soft bristle brush. Regular water-based paint will do just fine. To apply a design, take a sponge, dip it in paint, and then lightly press it against the surface of the wall. The entire area is processed in this way. This method of decoration visually increases the area of the room.

old lock

This finishing method can often be found in the hallways of country houses. This decor creates an imitation of a natural stone layout. It is considered expensive due to the fact that it is difficult to do it yourself and requires the involvement of craftsmen who can do it professionally.

Modern wall painting ideas

It is often mistakenly believed that wallpaper looks much better than painted walls. This is wrong! And here are examples of home decor using paint, which are in no way inferior to wallpaper. Future design limited only by imagination. Modern materials can help make your dream come true. Let's consider the designers' recommendations for decorating walls:

Living room

The living room in every home serves a different function. This is the most representative place in the house, but it is used differently everywhere. In one house this room is a hall and a meeting place for the whole family and guests, in another it is a quiet and secluded place for reading. It is important to decide functional load this room, because its color scheme depends on it!

If you love bright and saturated colors, but are afraid to use them, then there is a solution. Choose the same colors, but in more muted shades. Brown, pink, orange, light green, blue, gray, black and purple dilutes well with white. This is a color that is used both in decoration and in furniture solutions. White neutralizes dark and rich shades. The living room is the place where you can bring any idea to life!

Bedroom

The walls in the bedroom are most often painted with water-based paint. It is vapor permeable and safe. With equal success, you can trust her to paint wooden, brick and concrete walls. The bedroom is intended for rest and relaxation, so the colors should be chosen accordingly. Let's look at the most popular interior styles that are found in bedrooms:

Romantic ProvenceHere, delicate and transparent shades most often prevail: light pink, lavender, soft blue, white and light lilac.
Baroque multi-layeredAt least three aristocratic shades of these colors are mixed here: noble emerald, soft green, gold, beige, walnut, black and burgundy.
High techIn such interiors, only basic colors are used in cool tones: gray, light beige, white, cream.
MinimalismMinimum colors, preference for black, white and gray colors.
Elegant classicClassic neutral shades are used for wall decor: beige, brown, light cream and milky colors. Painted walls go well with furniture and flooring in dark shades. All colors are used in the bedroom, only in a calm version.

Kitchen

People spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Here they cook, eat, socialize. The color scheme of the kitchen is very important, as it can directly affect the mood in the morning. The paint for this room should be moisture-resistant and washable.

Bright yellow shades will always cheer you up. Green color is suitable for those who constantly adhere to a diet: it has a positive effect and calms the appetite. Light and beige shades are ideal if you need an elegant classic cuisine. Red color is a bold and bright solution, but requires careful handling, as it greatly affects appetite.

Children's

Paint for a children's room needs to be environmentally friendly, vapor-permeable and washable. Children often draw on the walls and need a special coating from which they can quickly wipe off their mischief.

Preferred colors for a children's room: yellow, orange, blue, green, light blue, soft pink.

Hallway

The corridor is the first thing a person sees when entering a house. It affects the impression of family members living here. When choosing decor for the hallway, it is important to take into account its dimensions: for small and narrow rooms, construction is undesirable frame structures and the use of dark colors. The paint should be easy to clean and wet clean.

Wear resistance is another condition when choosing a coloring material for the corridor. It is worth considering that light colors will be too easily soiled in this place.

Bathroom and toilet

Thanks to water-based paints that are not afraid of water, painting walls in bathrooms has begun to replace decorating with tiles. Here you can not be shy and fully express your design idea! Bright, muted, dark and light - a variety of colors and textures are used in bathrooms.

The main thing to consider is that the paint should not be afraid of water, be resistant to stains and durable. Walls are often combined decorated with tiles and painted.

  • After the paint package is opened, the dye is stirred to obtain a uniform color.
  • Painting takes place in a room where the temperature is not lower than 5 and not higher than 20 degrees Celsius. Humidity is also important to achieve the desired result. If the air is dry, it is better to turn on a humidifier or use a spray.
  • Drafts are excluded!
  • If there is mold or mildew on the walls, then before painting, the surface is treated with an antiseptic solution.
  • Working brushes, as well as rollers, must be thoroughly washed of paint and dried.

To summarize, I would like to note that if you carefully follow the technology and use suitable materials and dyes, the result of coloring will delight you for years!

Painting the walls, although not the initial or final stage of repair, is one of the main ones. After all, having spent time and effort preparing for the first painting, you can then easily and quickly change the color.

Preparing walls for painting

In order to produce high-quality painting walls and to get the perfect result, you need to properly prepare the surface. Preparation includes several stages:

  • Cleaning.
  • Putty.
  • Primer.

Cleaning is cleaning the walls from dust, dirt, cobwebs, as well as old wallpaper, which can be easily removed simply by moistening it generously with water. If there is old peeling paint, then you need to clean it off using a special scraper and spatula; in some cases, when this is difficult to do, a drill with a special attachment will come to the rescue.

When the surface is uneven and there are cracks on it, then it is necessary to putty it, but before that, the pre-cleaned surface should be thoroughly cleaned again of any remaining dust with a vacuum cleaner. In order to hide irregularities over 2.5 cm, starting putty is used, sometimes in several layers. But before applying the next layer, you need to wait until the previous one has dried well, prime it, and only then plaster it again. The primer provides maximum adhesion of the layers and in most cases has antiseptic properties, thereby protecting the walls from fungus and mold.

The final stage – finishing putty, which can hide the smallest irregularities up to 0.5 cm. It is important, after the putty has dried, to rub all the roughness with sandpaper until perfectly smooth, and thoroughly vacuum the surface from dust. That's it - the walls and ceilings are ready for painting.

Paint selection

Before you start choosing paint, you need to determine where it will be painted - outdoors or indoors, bedroom or bathroom - because paints have different performance properties to a greater or lesser extent and this must be taken into account. Principles that must be met good paint:

  • Vapor permeability (also called “breathability”).
  • Covering power (the ability to densely cover the surface from the first layer).
  • Moisture resistance.
  • Wear resistance.
  • Thixotropicity (the property of paint in which it does not drip or form streaks).

Types of paints

The main types of paints: water-based, water-dispersion, alkaloid and oil-based.

Water-based (water-soluble) paint - created on the basis of polymers and dyes, often an organic solvent - white spirit - is added to it. It is almost universal, easy to apply, vapor permeable and can withstand a long service life. Suitable for application to almost any surface - concrete, wood, as well as plaster, chipboard and brick. The disadvantage is that it is not very durable, because it does not withstand frequent washing, and does not paint over uneven spots and cracks well, but it is easy to apply drawings with it.

Water-dispersion paint is a water-soluble paint made from PVA, latex or acrylic resins. Most often it is produced only in white, and the required shade can be obtained by adding colors (special dyes). Here you need to remember that you need to dilute the paint all at once, since it is difficult to repeat later required color, even when maintaining all proportions. It is easy to apply, moisture-resistant and elastic, capable of hiding small cracks up to 0.5 mm.
Latex paint is a type of water-dispersion paint; it is better not to use it for exterior painting, as it can change color under constant exposure to ultraviolet radiation. But how internal finishing material it is perfect for painting wallpaper and decorative plaster; it is very wear-resistant and can be washed frequently.
Acrylic paint is made on the basis of acrylic resins, which, after drying, form a hard, smooth film; it provides good wear resistance, even in rooms with very high humidity. This paint dries quickly and does not have a very sharp, characteristic odor.

Silicone paint is more often used for treating external surfaces, as well as in bathrooms and toilet rooms, since it has functions such as vapor permeability and water resistance. After it dries, it forms a perfectly smooth surface, is resistant to fading, wear-resistant, and can also hide cracks of 2 mm.

How to choose a color

The choice of paint color primarily depends on personal preference, but you should also adhere to already known recommendations. First of all, focus on the size of the room - the smaller it is, the lighter the color should be, but if the windows face the sunny side, then you can choose darker and more saturated shades. But you need to take into account that the areas in which a person relaxes are better not to get carried away with bright and rich colors; soft and pastel colors will be preferable here, but the kitchen, living room, and corridors are places for experimentation.
It is fashionable to paint rooms not in one color, but in several, the main thing is to combine the colors correctly. And also, when choosing paint, you simply need to take into account the general style of the interior, because it is determined in advance and, in accordance with it, the color of the walls and ceilings is selected, which will be in harmony with other details, such as furniture, lamps, tulle, curtains.
It is important that the color of the walls in the hallway should be lighter than in the living room and bedroom, and that the adjacent rooms should be in harmony with each other.

Cool colors such as grey, blue, turquoise and their shades are more suitable for offices, and warm pastels are more suitable for the home.
Red and orange colors They are used in the kitchen or dining room, as they have a stimulating effect on the human psyche, help to wake up in the morning and stimulate appetite. If you combine several shades, you can adjust the room - visually increasing or decreasing it, making the necessary accents, dividing it into zones.

How to paint correctly

It would seem that there is nothing simpler than how to paint walls, but here there are some nuances, the main one of which is that you must paint from top to bottom. If you paint the ceiling along with the walls, then you need to start there. Important, last layer paint on the ceiling should be applied perpendicular to the wall on which it is located window hole. You need to pay attention that there are paints separately for walls and separately for ceilings, this is usually indicated on the label. The air temperature in the room where the walls will be painted should be between 5 and 20 degrees.

Paint is usually applied in several layers and the next one must be applied only when the previous one has dried. The most convenient way to do this is with a roller, and the choice depends on the quality of the surface preparation: for smooth ones, choose foam rubber or with short pile, and for uneven ones, choose fur ones with long pile. A brush can be used to touch up hard-to-reach areas.
When painting walls with a roller, you must first of all ensure that it is completely saturated with paint, and it must be applied, evenly distributed over the surface.

Painting the walls in the apartment

The choice of type of paint, color and painting method depends on the room in which the walls are painted.

Living room

In this room you can bring to life the most daring ideas - experiment with shades and textures.

Bedroom

To paint the walls in the bedroom, you need to pay special attention to the quality of the paint and opt for water-based paint, as it is completely safe for residential premises. The color depends on personal preference, but soft and calm is better.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a place where there is high humidity, therefore the paint must be moisture-resistant, such as latex or silicone, they are also abrasion-resistant, which allows them to be washed frequently.

Children's

Paint for a children's room should be environmentally friendly and non-toxic, and it is better to pay attention to those that are water-based, do not have a strong odor and are easy to wash and clean.

Bathroom

For the bathroom you need to carefully choose the paint, because there is a risk of mold and mildew due to constant high humidity, in this case acrylic paints silicone based ones are ideal.

Combined painting of walls - how to paint in several colors

Painting a room is convenient because you can experiment by combining several colors and shades, but you need to remember that the colors should overlap or complement each other. There are many options:

  • dividing the walls horizontally, with imitation panels;
  • geometric shapes (diamonds, stripes, waves, zigzags);
  • emphasis on one wall;
  • gradient;
  • drawings;
  • highlighting certain details in the interior (shelves, niches, recreation and work areas).

Rules for painting walls in several colors:

  1. First, paint the entire wall in the lighter color. After the paint has completely dried, draw the desired border and stick masking tape to the side that is not to be painted. It should be removed only when the paint is completely dry.
  2. If you select accent wall, but you need to adhere to the principle - either the same color as the main walls, a more intense shade, or from a compatible palette. Close colors and shades when combined give an interesting transition effect and always look original.
  3. Wide stripes can visually make a room wider and lower the ceiling.

When painting walls in several colors, small uneven lines can be corrected with the help of decorative borders, moldings, strips glued with liquid nails.
By painting the walls and ceilings, you can make the interior special and memorable, adding special charm and originality to it. The main thing is to approach this process intelligently, thinking through all the details and adhering to the basic rules, as a result you can get a high-quality coating that will not only please the eye, but will also be safe and durable in use.

Video: wall painting, ideas

While people of the older generation continue to agonize over the choice of wallpaper for decorating the walls in their apartment, young people, who have forgotten the Soviet past, are actively using paint. Painting walls is not a new approach, but if you dilute a time-tested solution with new trends in interior design and modern materials, the result will be a real masterpiece. Painting allows you to let out all your imagination; this is unlikely to happen with wallpaper. Let's find out how to prepare walls for painting in the interior, what paint is best to choose, what effect can be achieved.

Pros of painting walls

Working with paint, even if a complex painting technology is planned, for example, in two or more colors, is much simpler than the process of gluing wallpaper. Painting will be much cheaper. Walls intended for painting require less preparatory work– modern paints smooth out minor unevenness, oblique angles, and fit perfectly into bumps and holes. And when painting, there is no need to adjust patterns and joints.

If we continue to compare paint and wallpaper, then the first option wins in terms of available colors. Modern materials allow you to choose absolutely any shades. It is enough to choose a color and give it the desired depth and any saturation. But the range of wallpapers is strictly limited by the imagination of designers. And often you have to buy and work not with what you want, but with what the construction market offers.

You can paint the walls in two colors and apply visual effects– metallic, chameleon and others.

Preparing the wall

Painting the walls is the last stage of renovation. It is recommended to paint only from top to bottom. First of all, ceilings, cornices, and moldings are painted and only then work on the walls.

Before painting, the surface must be prepared. The wall should be as smooth as possible - paint, while being faithful to the characteristics of the surface, will only emphasize the disadvantages of the wall. All other coatings from the surface must be removed, then the wall is carefully checked for various defects. If necessary, you need to use putty or apply wallpaper for painting.

Choosing paint

The wall is ready to go, all that remains is to choose the paint. On modern construction market there are a lot of different options for colors and textures - and this is secondary. Experts recommend when selecting suitable paint focus on performance characteristics.

The most practical choice is water-based paints. The main advantage is its high versatility, simplicity in the painting process, long terms operation. Due to the fact that this paint is vapor-proof, the room will have an excellent healthy microclimate. With the help of these dyes they create designs with real drawings, work in two or more colors, and you can also create appliqués.

Many experts recommend acrylic paints. They have virtually no smell, are environmentally friendly, and are very convenient to work with. Paints on acrylic base- there are many colors and shades. The main color of acrylic dyes is white, but if you add pigments, you can get a very wide range. Often they are limited to painting the walls in a standard White color. Initially, the “European-quality renovations” that were popular in the 2000s shone with whiteness - white walls throughout the entire apartment, white doors, white window frames.

Modern interiors are painted in several colors, but white has advantages. This is an excellent background for paintings, for various decorative elements, indoor flowers.

Experimenting on the computer

To avoid feelings of deep disappointment after the paints dry, interior design experts recommend first trying to model the idea on the computer. Using Photoshop and photographs, you can very accurately select the desired color. You can also find design programs online, which, among other things, contain instructions on the compatibility of different colors.

Trendy colors

Need to know how they work different colors painted walls in the interior. Choosing a color is quite a difficult task. It is through the color scheme of the space that the first impression of the room is created. Decor, furniture, and other details play secondary roles. Besides, various colors have different effects on psychological state and mood. Therefore, the colors must be appropriate.

Pastel colors are best chosen for bedrooms, children's rooms and recreation areas. These colors, more than any other, are conducive to calm communication and tranquility.

Also, when choosing a color, you should pay attention to the size of the room - light colors visually expand the space, while dark colors hide it. A very popular solution now is painting in three colors. Contrast in combinations plays a huge role in this method. The brighter the adjacent color, the smaller the room will be visually. Therefore, designers recommend being more careful with purple, wine, and terracotta, which are fashionable today.

You can enlarge a room using monochrome colors. Particularly relevant are white, gray and blue. You can combine light colors with them - yellow, brown, orange.

When choosing a color, you should also take into account the overall style of the interior. If this is modern high-tech, then you can’t do without black and white. Natural colors are suitable for Provence and country. White, sand, and blue will look great in Italian and Greek styles. Neon pink, blue, and light green work great in youth interiors.

How to paint

Today, painting in several colors is considered a very popular solution. Exist different variants implementation of this idea. A fairly old method is to divide the walls horizontally. In this case, the room looks simple, but several problems can be solved at once. From the floor, the lower part of the wall is painted one color, and everything above is painted a different color.

The color dividing line is at a distance of 1/3 of the height from the floor. This is quite relevant for retro interiors, country, and classic styles. But today few people adhere to these rules - you can find an interior painted this way, but the line dividing the colors can be located anywhere.

Another popular approach is the so-called accent wall. Three of the four walls are painted neutral colors, the fourth is painted a completely different color.

In the case of painting using the “gradient” technique, the surfaces will differ not in color, but in their saturation.

You can also use colored inserts - this is an imitation of decorative interior panels. But you need to prepare the surface in a special way. First, the wall is painted in the background color, then markings are made and, after drying, the desired patterns are created.

Available in modern apartments and brick walls. You need to know how to paint a brick wall, and then you can get very interesting effects. It is better to choose colors as close to natural as possible. White or beige are also popular. If the wall is an accent wall, then the choice is bright colors.
