In order for the installation result to please you for many years, you need to adhere to the recommendations below step-by-step algorithm actions.
Removing old windows
Regardless of who will install new double-glazed windows in a wooden building - you or invited workers - It is permissible to install new structures only on a rigid foundation. I was lucky: the window casings in our house were replaced a couple of years ago, so the wood was flawless. That is, I did not find any wormholes, rot, cracks, dents or chips on it. Therefore, when ordering double-glazed windows, I indicated the dimensions of the new windows, taking into account that the boxes would remain. If in your case the condition of the frames turns out to be not very good, but your housekeeping will not allow you to throw them away, then the dismantled items can be used as the basis for a mini-greenhouse.
Don't know how good and bad the boxes under your windows are? All the same, do not allow either yourself or your employees to break them out “with meat”. You will always have time to use it for firewood. The same applies to glass: there is no certainty that they will not crack during dismantling, so take it out first - they will also find a use. I was lucky again: the frames were still strong, so the structures were removed without removing the glass.
How to prepare a place
Walk around the entire perimeter of the frame with a dry brush or clean rag to sweep away anything remaining after dismantling.
Window sill installation
First to be assigned to a permanent place plastic window sill , which is “charged” with serving as the basis for the rest of the structure. Hence the “legs grow” of the requirement to install it perfectly level and horizontal. A regular building level. To adjust its location taking into account the level readings, use cut strips of plastic or wood chips (the latter only if they have been treated with an antiseptic). To stabilize the window sill, make a notch on each side of the box, going 8 millimeters deep into the wood.
Secure the window sill with self-tapping screws, screwing it to the bottom of the window frame. Fasteners are placed with a two-centimeter indentation from the outer end of the window sill and with a mandatory backing under each washer. It will prevent the self-tapping screw from breaking through the fabric if you overdo it when tightening the fasteners. Don't worry that the fasteners will spoil the overall impression - they simply won't be visible.
How to prepare a double-glazed window
I recommend installing a handle before starting installation work. But the film can be removed later - this way there is less chance of leaving unattractive stripes on the surface of the plastic. You only need to tear off the adhesive strip where the handle is installed. When placing the lever on the sash, hold its long part parallel to the window sill.
After installing the window, this position of the handle will correspond to the mode of opening the entire sash towards itself. When the handle is moved with the end down, the sash will be locked; upward - only the narrow upper part of the window can completely move away from the frame panel.
Having secured the handle to the panel with a pair of bolts, you need to turn it end down. On the side posts, mark the holes for fastenings that will hold the window within the frame.
Window installation
We place the assembled structure in the opening, making sure that on both vertical edges the intermediate distance from the frame to the sides of the glass unit is the same (about a centimeter). At the same time, remember that the horizontal direction is given to us by the previously strengthened correct position windowsill. If it is inconvenient to use a level due to the presence of decor on the outside of the wall, then use a plumb line.
While the person helping you holds the frame, you must wedge a centimeter-wide spacer bar between the frame and the window frame. Their presence is necessary for the stability of the structure being fixed at the moment of connecting the glass unit to the frame with self-tapping screws. If you are lazy or forget about the bars, you can cause the window to move to the side during the fastening process. As a result, the doors will then be difficult to open and close.
After wedging in the bars and placing the glass unit strictly according to the level indicators, secure the inserted structure in the box with self-tapping screws, not forgetting to screw them in on each of the four sides.
When inserting a self-tapping screw, you need to ensure that its location is in the free space between the window and the frame itself.
Then, during periods when the house “walks” under the influence of climatic influences and seasonal changes, the windows in it will not warp.

How to install double-glazed windows in a wooden building?
First, take care of maintaining the passage of the drain holes - install adjusting plates between them that will prevent condensation from accumulating from the window. Then insert the double-glazed window into the opening of the box so that there is free space around the entire perimeter between the two structures. It is necessary to maintain the integrity of the glass in the frame when the frame will move behind the house in the spring or winter.
If the glass unit fits tightly to the frame (minimum gap of 5 mm), file a claim with the manufacturer of the structure. A decent contractor should respond by offering an appropriate solution to the problem.
Having inserted the double-glazed window into the box and aligned the first one on four sides relative to the last one, secure its position plastic glazing beads with profile spikes. These “spiky” strips are very easy to install: just push them with small taps into the openings. When the bead's spines reach the grooves, you will hear a characteristic click.
Having achieved a fixed and correct placement of the double-glazed window in the box, fill the voids between these two structures with polyurethane foam, treating the cracks from the inside and outside.
Remove any frozen excess by trimming with a knife.
Having made sure that the work was carried out correctly: the grooves are closed, the sashes move only under the pressure of your hands, you can begin installing additional fittings, trims and drainage systems.
Secure Installation Rules
All difficulties with installing windows in wooden houses have one root: the instability of wooden structures throughout the entire operational period. Without taking this factor into account during the installation of plastic structures, be it windows or doors, it is quite possible to end up in a situation where the new “joinery” fails without even working for a year.
How do wooden houses differ from others? Wood loses a lot of moisture in the first years after the construction of a log house. A year, as some say, is not enough for the final drying process. In the best case, the walls of the house will take their final size in the sixth year after their construction. But in some regions the process of “walking” of houses never ends.
On average, the height of the wall can decrease by 4-5 cm. And what will happen to the double-glazed windows that were installed in the box in such a way that there was only 2-2.5 cm between the sides of these structures? Are the owners really wooden houses Do you need to forget about dreams of plastic windows? Of course not. You just need to follow a number of technical recommendations.
First: do not neglect the casing. It is also called a pigtail. Thanks to it, any windows gain independence from the influence, within reasonable limits, of the load-bearing walls of the building. Whether they shrink or become slightly bent, this will not affect the integrity and functionality of the window.
General technical specifications casing:
- will protect the logs from moving away from the vertical in the area of the window opening;
- does not resist vertical shrinkage of the wall;
- takes on all the loads;
- contributes to the strength of the wall in the window opening area.
What is casing? The most common option is to make square vertical grooves with a side of 5 cm in the ends of the logs and then seal them with bars of the same size. But such treatment of the walls around the opening is only suitable for preparing a place for wooden windows. To prepare an opening for plastic double-glazed windows, you need to make a ridge at the ends of the logs, and then install a window carriage with a groove on it. The presence of a tongue and groove will ensure that the logs slide without harming the window frame.
What is a window carriage? These are vertical bars with dimensions of 15x10 cm, with notches on the edges. The depth of the cuts is 5x5 cm, they are made for inserting jumpers topped at the ends with spikes in the form of 15x5 cm planks.
The assembled casing is 7-8 centimeters below the window opening. This gap is left due to possible wall shrinkage. When the pigtail is assembled in the opening, it is then covered with rolled tow, and carriages are stuffed on top. After such a procedure, neither creaks from shrinkage nor drafts from under the window are scary.
Then you need to make the lower jumper and also stuff the carriages onto the comb with tow. Insert the upper jumper into the hole from above, and then lower it into the groove. Then strengthen the structure with self-tapping screws, making sure that they do not touch the ridge - this is important for maintaining the resulting structure’s relative freedom. After All cracks found between the window frame and the walls must be filled with tow.
You can also insert metal-plastic double-glazed windows into this design without fear that they will jam when the house shrinks. When installing, do not forget that noise, heat, and vapor barriers also need to be taken care of.
The gap between the log house and the casing must be filled with thin strips with wound tow fibers.
When the house begins to shrink noticeably, knock out the slats to replace them with new ones. To make this process easier, I strongly recommend attaching the top casing only to the casing. If you need it, carefully remove it, change the filling, and secure it in place.
When I conducted seminars, I often encountered bewilderment about the need for a window installer to understand the technology of constructing wooden buildings. What's strange about this? Without this, the installer will not be able to install the window in such a way that it will serve for years without complaints. In other cases it is impossible to do without casing.

Remember: everything wooden buildings shrink. And this fact must always be taken into account when installing plastic double-glazed windows in a log house.
The strongest shrinkage processes of wood occur in the first two years after the construction of the log house is completed. Each meter of masonry shrinks by 1.5 cm. And this is a very large value to ignore when equipping a wooden house with plastic windows.
Why do they make a casing?
The durability of the plastic window and the level of comfort during use depend on how professionally the casing is carried out. It provides the window with a safe position during the period when the house is once again slightly deformed due to fluctuations under the influence of changes in humidity or temperature.

The nuances of preparing a window opening
Do not be intimidated by the work of installing plastic double-glazed windows in a wooden building. If you follow the correct algorithm, you can insert modern window in a log house of any age.

Installation nuances
The finished metal-plastic structure is placed after being perfectly pulled out onto foreground or deepening into the wall. The main product is secured with self-tapping screws, screwing them into specially prepared grooves.
It is permissible to install a metal-plastic window of any configuration in an ordinary wooden house, but not made of timber, if you know how to properly frame it, take measurements and select the appropriate fittings.
When selecting tools and other materials, do not take self-tapping screws longer than 12 cm. Such “stings” will definitely go beyond the frame and dig into the main building, which is unacceptable given the mobility of a wooden house.
To waterproof the external seam, you can use acrylic sealant without additional components in the composition, a sealing tape that is self-expanding after being placed in place, or a regular vapor-permeable one. Such protection will extend the service life of the polyurethane foam and prevent the formation of drafts.
A vapor barrier tape is placed along the inner seam, securing it with special glue. And only then the seam is treated with polyurethane foam.

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic windows in a prepared frame of a wooden house, like other construction and installation work, is carried out using a building level and a plumb line.
It is very important that the plastic windows in the house are strictly level, otherwise an open window sash, for example, will close itself or, conversely, open under its own weight. Thus, the technology for installing plastic windows in the frame of a wooden house includes setting it level and plumb before fixing the window.
Here's ours own experience developed instructions for installing plastic windows in a log house.
First, I would like to note one point that you will need to remember when purchasing plastic windows: When you buy windows, it would be good to immediately buy mounting fasteners for them, ideally 6 pieces per window.
These are iron plates (see photo) which, with the help of little effort, are fixed in special technical slides on the sides of the window frame. Thus, the frame is attached to the frame using self-tapping screws through these mounting fasteners.
During installation, many installers of plastic windows fasten the window by drilling through the frame, but this is a violation of technology, and the tightness of special air chambers in the profile of the plastic window is thus broken, so this is not our method.

The instructions for installing plastic windows in a prepared frame of a wooden house are as follows:
Align the window. We place the window on the lower part of the opening on wood chips about 2 cm thick and adjust it horizontally. For setting a horizontal level, the best tool, in our opinion, is a water level.
You can’t fool the water; it always levels out with the horizon.
Thus, having installed the window exactly at the horizon level, placing chips of the required thickness under the frame for this purpose, leaving about a two-centimeter gap at the bottom for foaming with polyurethane foam, we proceed to setting the vertical level so that the window sashes do not live their own lives.
I don’t think it’s worth explaining in detail how the vertical level is set when installing a plastic, or any other window, everything is clearly visible in the photograph.
After we have placed the window level, we attach it to the frame with self-tapping screws through the above-mentioned mounting fasteners.
There is one technological point here - do not hit the ridge of the log on which the pigtail sits with a self-tapping screw.
It is better to screw in the self-tapping screw slightly obliquely than to deprive the frame structure of its independence from the frame in terms of the free movement of the carriages along the ridges of the logs.
The next step in our instructions for installing plastic windows in a wooden house will be attaching the window sashes. It is necessary to hang the sashes on the window before foaming, but if you foam the frame without sashes, the mounting foam may slightly bend the frame, and the sashes will not close/open well.
Thus, if the technology is followed correctly and the installation of the frame and the plastic window is carried out smoothly, your window should be positioned in such a way that there will be approximately 2 cm of space for the mounting foam on all sides from the frame to the frame.
And above the upper part of the frame there will be a gap of 5-10 cm to the log for shrinkage of the log house, so that when it is completely dry, the upper logs do not put pressure on the windows.
Foaming the window. Control check - On a window that is already fixed, but not yet foamed, with the sashes inserted, open the window and look.
If the half-open sash of a plastic window does not try to open further or, on the contrary, close, then our window is installed correctly and you can foam the frame with polyurethane foam.

Removing old windows
Self-installation of double-glazed windows in a wooden house is carried out on a solid foundation (frame). Since in our example, the window boxes were installed quite recently (about 5 years ago) and were without damage (cracks, chips, rotten formations and wormholes), we decided to use them instead of a frame for installing new windows.
Old window frames that are in good condition and have sufficient strength, they can be reused, for example, to install a greenhouse.
Therefore, in order not to damage the wood of the frame, they must be dismantled carefully; it also does not hurt to remove the glass from them before doing this. In our case, we did not remove the glass from the frame, since the durable frames did not warp when removing them and were dismantled quite easily.
Preparing a site for installing double-glazed windows
With a dry and clean rag (or soft brush) you need to wipe the window frame and remove the waste and debris that has accumulated after dismantling.
The PVC window sill is installed first, since it is the base of the double-glazed window when it is installed. In this regard, the window sill should be installed as level as possible (ideally horizontal). We check the exact horizontal installation of the window sill with a level, both longitudinally and transversely.
To ensure that the window sill stands firmly, we make cuts up to 8 mm deep on the sides of the window frame. To adjust the evenness of the window sill, we use special plates made of plastic or fiberboard, or thin wooden planks treated in advance with an antiseptic. After the final installation of the window sill, we measure the evenness of the window sill with a building level.
We fasten the window sill with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the window frame, while making a 2 cm indent from the outer end of the window sill. When tightening the screws, we place washers under their heads in order to protect the surface of the window sill from damage, which is possible if it is broken through by the self-tapping head (at PVC window sills have cavities). After the window is completely installed, the places where the window sill is attached will not be visible, since they will be hidden from view.
Preparing a plastic window for installation
At the very beginning, even before installing the window, you need to install the handle. There is no need to remove all the protective film from the window surface yet, as it protects the window from possible mechanical damage.
Pay attention!
The protective film is removed only in the place where the handles need to be installed. The handle handles must be in a horizontal position when installed.
This position means that the window opens on its side, and if the handle is turned down, the window will be locked in the closed state, but if the handle handle is turned up, the window will open in the crank mode.
We fix the handle to the window with two bolts and move the handle handle down. On the side posts of the window (at the ends) we make markings for making holes on which the window will be fixed to the block.
Next, using an electric drill, we drill two through holes (lower and upper) along this marking in the right pillar of the double-glazed window and in lower rack(4 holes in total). The distance between the bottom and top parts of the glass unit to the hole should be from 25 to 35 cm. The diameter of the drill for this work should be 6 mm, while the diameter of the screw is 5 mm.
To ensure that the head of the self-tapping screw rests firmly on the window frame, we drill holes on the side posts from the inside for fastening with a drill with a large diameter - 10 mm, right up to the metal frame. The hole should be such that the head of the screw fits freely into the cavity of the window post.
Window installation
Install assembled window into the window opening. We control the center using measurements taken with a tape measure starting from the edge of the window and ending with the surface of the window frame on both sides; the distance should be the same (about 1 cm).
We install the window on the surface of the previously installed window sill. Since we have already checked the window sill for levelness using a building level, there is no need to check the window itself for horizontalness.
To install a window parallel to the wall of the house, we install a building level between the wall and the siding for support. If the house was sheathed with another finishing material, for example, clapboard, which fits tightly to the wall and does not allow placing a level, then you need to use a plumb line for control.
Install between window frame and a spacer bar 1 cm wide for the window. It is necessary that this block fits tightly enough between the window frame and the window. This block is needed as a stop at the moment when the window is attached to the window opening using self-tapping screws.
If this is not done, then the window may move to the side when it is fastened (it will simply be pulled away) and at the same time the mechanism for opening and closing the window will not function well, or the window sash will not open at all.
When the installation of the stop bars is completed and the window is aligned with a level or slope parallel to the wall of the house, then we fix the double-glazed window with self-tapping screws. We fix the window to the window frame from the bottom and top of its side posts, so that the self-tapping screw is in the free space between the frame and the window.
Such fastening is not only reliable, but also provides a floating effect. If there are seasonal shifts in the structure of the house, warping the window openings, then windows that are not rigidly attached to the frame are almost not subject to warping, due to the fact that the self-tapping screw can arbitrarily move in the direction of the skew of the window frame.
Installation of double-glazed windows in a wooden house
First, install adjusting plates between the drain holes. This is necessary so that the glass unit does not cover the openings through which condensation is drained from the window.
Carefully install the double-glazed window into the window opening. We make sure that it does not fit tightly between the window posts, since if seasonal changes occur and, accordingly, distortions of the window frame, the glass may burst.
Pay attention!
If your glass unit fits tightly, and there is no gap between the window mullions and the glass unit (at least 5 mm), then you should contact the company that made the windows for you for an explanation, so that the company’s employees can eliminate this disadvantage. It is necessary to check the gaps between the frame and the glass unit before removing the old window.
We install the double-glazed window evenly and fix it with plastic beads, which have profile tenons that are inserted into the grooves of the window frame by lightly tapping the beads, when the tenon goes into the groove and a click is heard. A click means the staple is securely fastened.
After the window is installed, we fill the void between the window frame and the window with foam for installation, both on the inside and outside of the house. Excess hardened polyurethane foam is cut off with a sharp knife.
After this, you can begin finishing with platbands, fittings and drainage.

But only if a special structure, called a casing or casing, is installed in the opening.
The purpose of this design is to give windows (and not only plastic ones) complete independence from the load-bearing walls of the house, to eliminate even the slightest load on the window when the walls shrink or bend:

Let's take a closer look at this system. The simplest casing option is when a vertical groove of 50x50 mm is cut at the ends of the opening logs and a beam of the same size is inserted into it.
But this method of making a joint is ONLY suitable for wooden windows. Therefore, we will not dwell on it. More reliable option casing is when a ridge is made at the ends of the logs, and a window carriage with a groove is put on it.
Now the logs, when shrinking (due to the ridge), will slide inside the groove without deviating from the vertical and without pressing down on the window.
It happens that a groove is made in logs, but the tenon is on the gun carriage, the main meaning, I think, is clear.
Window carriages are vertical beams 150x100 mm, at the ends of which 50x50 cutouts are made for inserting horizontal lintels - boards 150x50 mm with tenons at the ends.
The assembled casing is smaller window opening by 7 - 8 cm in height. This gap is left in anticipation of wall shrinkage. When assembling the frame in the opening, we cover the ridges with rolled tow and stuff the carriages onto it. This will save us from squeaks during shrinkage and insulate the opening.
Pay attention!
Next, the procedure is as follows: lay the bottom lintel, stuff gun carriages onto the comb with tow, top clearance we insert and lower the upper jumper into the grooves. We fasten the entire structure with self-tapping screws, trying not to grab the ridge, otherwise the whole point of installing the casing will be lost. We also stuff tow into the gap between the sapling and the logs.
But now you can install plastic windows into a wooden house without fear of the consequences. We carry out installation in compliance with all technologies: steam - noise - moisture protection. The gap between the casing and the frame is filled with thin boards wrapped in tow.
As the house shrinks, they have to be knocked out and replaced with others. To do this, the upper casing (attached only to the casing) is carefully removed and, after replacing the filling, put back in place.

Under no circumstances agree to install windows without casing in the opening. Even if the owner proves that the house is 300 years old and “all the shrinkage has already settled.” The tree “breathes” all its life with all the consequences, as they say.
Well, as a last resort, you can give in to the client, at his responsibility. But do not forget to put a dash in the “Guarantee” column in the contract!!!
Still, installing plastic windows in a wooden house requires very serious attention.
