Decorative wood panels on the wall can be bought in showrooms decorative finishing walls and ceilings, but much more pleasing to the eye handmade, made with your own hands. For creating decorative decoration materials needed:

  • plywood sheet,
  • wooden bars.

To imagine what a wooden panel will look like, you need to first draw it.

You can start by cutting the timber into small pieces. To do this, marks are first made and then sawing begins along them. To fill all the plywood, you will need about fifty pieces with different heights: from one to two centimeters. All sawn pieces are thoroughly sanded.

The basis for the panel is plywood. When purchasing it, you should pay attention that the sheet is even and there is an even number of layers, otherwise the plywood base may “lead.” You need to buy plywood with a reserve, since the bars may swell a little when painted. Before you start assembling the panels, you need to lay out the bars in such a way that the difference in heights looks harmonious.

The panel is painted according to the sketch as follows. Some of the cubes are painted on the front side and ends, and then put in their place. After the paint has dried, which will take about 12 hours, they begin to glue the blocks to the plywood.

It is important to remember that wood can either shrink or expand when humidity changes. To prevent the plywood from being visible at the joints, it needs to be tinted. The blocks are glued evenly and neatly to the prepared surface. The excess plywood is sawed off along a pre-drawn line and carefully sanded. Then the ends and back wall are painted. On the reverse side of the panel they make a durable hinged mount. To give the plywood panel a finished look, the front side is coated with wax.

Thai wood craftsmen create amazing products - teak panels. Carved panels are actually 3D paintings with many small details. They depict the life of people, local plants and animals or deities. Some panels are created by masters over several years; it also happens that one master begins work on a product, and another one finishes it. The model of the finished carved panel is in the master’s head, and on the massif prepared for carving there is only a schematic sketch of the future masterpiece.

Teak itself wood material It is quite soft, and therefore easy to process, but over time it hardens, becomes stronger, and practically does not react to humidity and temperature. The craftsmen work with a hammer and the most ordinary chisels, but even such rough processing objects do not prevent the craftsmen from creating the finest carvings. Carved panels are always made from solid wood, as this directly affects the price of the product.

Let me start with the fact that my husband and I bought our first apartment in our lives and began to gradually inhabit it. I am very inspired by eco-design, but we live in a big metropolis, so new interior I wanted to add a piece of nature. The first thing that needed to be done to more or less comfortable stay, - arrange the kitchen. Scrolling through the many beautiful pictures, I really wanted to make a panel from wood cuts for the wall above dining table.

Preparation

I read a bunch of sites on how to dry wood at home, since no one uses fresh saw cuts - they crack a lot and can become moldy. To be honest, there is very little information on the Internet on this matter, it is poorly verified, scarce and contradictory. Basically, all the advice boils down to the fact that this should be done in production conditions. In the end, I chose and decided to try the two most realistic methods for me: boil the saw cuts in oil or in a very concentrated salt solution. I outlined a general procedure: file, dry, process, sand. So, vacation came, we went to the village, and I began to act.

Step 1

In our area, mostly pine trees grow - that's what we used. Everything is simple here: we drank some spills by eye different diameters and forms. They were sawing something hand saw(she turned out to be more careful), something - with an electric saw (so the cuts turned out to be very “wavy”). Medium and small diameters have become accustomed to sawing circular saw: it gave the best result - the cuts were very smooth and even - but did not “take” large diameters.

Step 2

Then I selected test cuts and boiled a couple of them in oil. I didn't get anything useful out of this. It was ordinary sunflower oil: they say you should use linseed oil, but we didn’t have it on hand. The saw cuts were burnt and blackened, but also dried out. The photo shows several regular cuts and one black one after oil treatment.

I had no choice but to cook the saw cuts in salt. I took a large old vat and boiled the cuts in several batches in a very concentrated salt solution. She cooked for a long time - from an hour to two, stirring occasionally. When boiling, all resins rise to the top in the form of a black film.

Be careful: one of my pans was damaged - its bottom was corroded by salt at the site of a small wormhole. So use ceramic cookware with a solid bottom or one that you don't mind. And watch the process carefully!

Some saw cuts crack greatly during cooking, sometimes in half, but these are few. In any case, make provisions in reserve - there will be a defect one way or another.

Step 3

When the saw cuts were still damp after cooking, I removed the bark - it becomes soft and can be easily removed with a knife. Then I laid the blanks on a cloth and dried them for a long time (about a week or two). room temperature for a long time, and then warm oven. As a result of this long process, the saw cuts actually dried out, and the salt removed all the resins and moisture from them.

Step 4

When all the blanks were made, I compiled a rough version of the panel and selected the necessary ones for polishing. Sanding took 3 days. My husband removed the top layers with a grinder, and I then brought the cuts to mind using grinder installed in a vice. The work is very dusty, we did it in the garage and outside. Then all the cuts were treated with a special impregnation for wood against bacteria.

I cut it before and after sanding.

Step 5

I used plywood for the base of the panel. The sheet was of medium thickness: not too thin so as not to lead, but not too thick so as not to weigh down the structure. Then I painted the plywood the same color as the wall where the structure will be attached. Additionally, I decided to process the cuts again so that the dust would not settle on them so much. I didn't want to varnish coating, so for the most natural effect I purchased natural wax on water based so that the tree can “breathe”.

Step 6

I spread the waxed saw cuts over a sheet of plywood and then glued them on one at a time.

Step 7

We secured the finished panel with self-tapping screws above the dining table. We really liked the result. I hope you will also appreciate it, and my humble experience will help you if you want to do something similar.

Handmade wood products are becoming increasingly popular. They are valued for their natural beauty, environmental friendliness and functionality. Wooden panels will ideally decorate the interior of any room.

A type of wooden panel on the wall

  • Volumetric - the image partially moves away from the surface and resembles a sculpture.
  • Contour - more complex look thread. A somewhat “dry” drawing, reminiscent of an engraving.

From bars (cuts)

A designer wall can also be made from a tree trunk. When the tree dries out at the dacha, you need to cut it down and prepare bars of the same thickness from it. Remove the bark from each, sand it, and treat it against insects. Now you can create a composition, take everything: a massive trunk and small branches. The resulting voids will create the feeling that the painting is breathing.

From wooden slats of different lengths

The result is a multi-colored bright panel - a rainbow, which can be placed above the sofa.

Wood compositions

  • Family tree.
  • A shelf tree, a tree painted on the wall, and three (or more) shelves or a whole tree are real bookshelves.
  • A hanger in the shape of a small tree is simple and cute.
  • Dry branches of a tree (birch, for example, if the wall is dark) can decorate the wall in the living room.
  • The wall can be decorated with long dry branches in floor vases. Branches painted in contrasting colors– black or white, gold or silver, placed on a table or nightstand by the bed.

Which wood is best to use?

The most pliable wood is coniferous species, the strongest and most durable - teak and oak. You can also craft from birch, linden and alder.

How to make a wooden wall panel with your own hands

If unnecessary pallets (pallets) are used, they must first be disassembled: using reciprocating saw cut the boards in places hammered nails. Clean the resulting board with sandpaper. If you need to save shabby old look wood, you don’t need to sand a lot, it’s enough to remove large defects. Then we disinfect again.

If the board looks good, you can leave it in its original condition. In the case when the boards are different: dark (old) and light (new), it’s also not scary: with the help of stain they can be visually combined. The color is uneven, but it will highlight the texture of the wood. After drying, the boards can be mounted on plywood of the same size, then on the wall.

What you will need: tools and materials

  • Knife or jigsaw.
  • Board required sizes: smooth, without damage or knots, polished.
  • Sketch a drawing on a piece of paper.
  • A simple pencil.
  • Stain.

The tools are sharp, be careful!

When a panel is made from bars, the parts are cut out slightly larger in size; in order to be fired and saturated with color, they must be dipped in hot sand or salt. Then coat with glue and assemble into a composition.
