An innovation in glass insulation is a special film that allows daylight into the room, but does not let it out. infrared radiation. This film has two sides, which must be taken into account when gluing it to glass. We glue the metallic side to the glass and the transparent side to the inside of the room. When performing work, your hands should be clean, and it is better to use cotton gloves so that there are no greasy stains on the surface of the film.

We cut out the sheet with a margin and overlap it so that it can be easily secured to the window frame with double-sided tape. Such a film, if well glued, does not interfere with the design of the window, and it looks aesthetically pleasing and neat. (8th method) Insulation and modernization of a wooden window

An effective way to insulate a window is its partial reconstruction and modernization. This method will retain heat in the room and limit the passage of cold air through the window perimeter. In this case, the shutters will open freely, and the external design of the window will not be disturbed in any way. The purpose of this method is not only to insulate, but also to reduce the penetration of noise and sounds into the room through the window.

Painstaking work requires time and patience. We remove the window from its hinges and place it on a table or floor. It is necessary to remove the glazing beads along the entire perimeter; if necessary, we replace them. We take the glass out of the frame, carefully clean the grooves on the frame for laying it, then fill the joints with sealant. We install it in its original place, and for greater effect we apply silicone along its entire perimeter. We put glazing beads and nail them in place.


If you have already completed a difficult job - dismantling the frame, then do some minor repairs: remove the old varnish and paint and apply a new paint and varnish coating, replace the fittings, install new locking devices.

It must be remembered that work with polyurethane foam can only be carried out at positive temperatures of at least +5°.

(9th method) Removing cracks in window frames

Due to various circumstances (exposure to temperature changes, moisture), cracks appear on window frames. To maintain the integrity of the structure and prevent their further expansion, we seal cracks in several ways:

  • pour molten paraffin;
  • seal with special putty for wood;
  • fill the gaps with sealant, you can match the color to the frame.

If necessary, we repaint the window, and the cracks become invisible and the frame has an attractive appearance.

(10th method) Insulation of the entire perimeter of the window frame

The whole process of insulating a wooden window consists of choosing the material for the work and the method of laying it, taking into account the characteristics of the wooden window. We mainly insulate the cracks, which are located at the junction of the frame and sashes.

If we are guided by Swedish technology, then it is necessary special tool- use a cutter to make a groove inside the perimeter of the window and fill it with a tubular-shaped silicone seal that will cover all the smallest cracks and defects. The process is complex; if the window is old, it may not withstand removal and hanging; it is not cheap; the work must be performed by professionals.

An easier way is to place and glue the seal around the perimeter onto the transom of the window. When we close the frame, it will bend the seal and not slide over it; it will fit tightly, closing all the cracks. This insulation can be laid in rows in several layers. Its use must be combined with the installation of glass on a layer of sealant. The seal installed in this way will last for many years and there will be no need to remove it in the spring and install it in the fall.

"Folk methods" of insulating windows

Many people believe that in order to keep the house cool through the window openings, it is enough to install plastic windows. When installing PVC windows, their openings are actually insulated with mineral wool and polyurethane foam. Many people do the insulation of plastic windows with their own hands - they use polystyrene foam to insulate internal slopes etc. The windows themselves are designed in such a way that they conduct heat to a lesser extent than windows with conventional glass. However, what to do if it is not possible to install a double-glazed window?

Wooden windows

Of course, dry wooden frames should be replaced during repairs. And these may well be plastic windows. But don’t rush to replace high-quality wooden “joinery” just to make the house warmer! You can use a proven method, for example, sealing with foam rubber and sealing window cracks. There are other similar methods, although they all have several common disadvantages (windows cannot be opened in winter, and they need to be cleaned in spring), many still use them.

The fastest and easiest way to quickly and tightly seal window cracks is to fill them with molten paraffin. Heat the paraffin in hot (about 70 degrees) water, put it into a syringe without a needle and pour it into the cracks. There is no need to seal the cracks over paraffin; it does not crumble or fall out.

If you decide to putty your windows, keep in mind that the most handy tool For " window works"is not a construction spatula at all. The most convenient way to do this is with a metal shoe horn. Its semicircular shape allows you to smooth out the putty, remove excess and form an even, smoothed seam.

Warming "inserts":

  • One way to get rid of drafts is to insulate the windows using thick linen cord. Open the window sashes and lay the cord around its entire perimeter. For reliability, secure it with small nails or glue. When the window is closed, the gaps between the sashes will be tightly sealed. The cord can be used for more than one year.
  • As a rule, modern household appliances are sold in foam packaging. With a sharp knife or with a heated soldering iron, cut the foam into strips slightly wider than the distance between the glass panes in the frame, and lay them along the entire perimeter of the window. They should enter with some effort and tightly block the path to the “cold bridges”. Polystyrene foam can also be placed in the cracks along the outer perimeter of the window.
  • In old houses where the distance between the frames is quite large, an old blanket is often placed inside. If the frames are located close to each other, place cotton wool, foam rubber, batting or padding polyester between them.

Pastes and putties

  • Old double wooden windows, the frames of which are connected with screws, can be insulated with a paste of chalk, flour wallpaper paste (2:1 ratio) and water or clay and sand (1:2 ratio). Open the doors and tightly fill the recesses along the glass with paste. External cracks are covered in the same way. When you open the window in the spring, the “putty” will fall off on its own.
  • Another recipe for insulating paste from the cold is gypsum-chalk paste (gypsum to chalk ratio 2:1), diluted until soft. On white frames it is almost invisible. You can remove smudges with plain water, and cleaning windows in the spring is just as easy as in the previous case.
  • In the past, when each family subscribed to several daily newspapers, soaked newsprint was often used to seal window frames. The dried paper paste reliably fills the slightest cracks inside and outside the window, and leaves no traces behind. Today no one will specifically buy newspapers for insulation, but forget about such a simple and inexpensive way It’s not worth fighting drafts.

After caulking or caulking the external cracks, they are sealed with strips of paper, fabric or paper (painting) tape. It is not recommended to use transparent polyethylene tape - it insulates cracks well, but breaks easily and often falls off. It’s even easier to seal the window cracks with medical adhesive tape. It is not blown through, is not afraid of moisture, and after peeling off it leaves no traces. Paper or fabric strips are glued with starch paste or laundry soap.

Insulation using “Swedish technology”

One of the main disadvantages of the “old-fashioned” methods of preserving heat in the house is that windows sealed in this way cannot be opened until spring.

If you insulate wooden windows using Swedish technology, the windows can be opened and closed at any time of the year. This is convenient, for example, for insulating a wooden balcony door. Particularly important is the ability to open balcony door in apartments with a glazed but uninsulated balcony.

Insulation using Swedish technology

For “Swedish” window insulation you will need a hollow tubular seal (insulation) and transparent silicone sealant. If necessary, use sealant to seal cracks in the area of ​​slopes and cracks in places where the glass is adjacent to the frame. Before starting work, you need to check, adjust and fit all window mechanisms (hinges, locks, latches).

This method of insulating window frames is used for classic wooden windows. Although at first glance it may seem that such work is not difficult to carry out on your own, it is better to entrust it to specialists. They will not only do everything faster and better, but also use materials they are confident in. The best confirmation of how effective and reliable window insulation using Swedish technology is is the feedback from those who, thanks to it, decided not to change wooden frames to metal-plastic ones.

Work order

Before starting work, the window must be washed. Check how the doors open and close and whether the locks and hinges are jammed. Now remove the window from its hinges and take it to where you will be working on it. Window insulation is best done on the balcony or on staircase, because after work a lot of garbage remains. The doors are insulated both between each other and inside.

  • Remove and, if necessary, grind off protruding layers old paint. Typically, these drips prevent the sashes from fitting tightly to the window frame when opening and closing them, which is why it blows from the window.
  • Using a milling cutter, cut grooves of the required depth along the entire contour of the window frame. A tubular hollow seal-insulation material, for example “Euro-Strip”, is inserted (rolled) into them. If the work is carried out by specialists called by you, they use the seal whose reliability they have tested in their practice.
  • After the window is insulated, it is installed on the hinges. After this, you need to check again how easily and tightly the window opens and closes and adjust its mechanisms. You may need to replace your window hardware.

"Magic Film"

Many people have heard about insulating plastic windows with film. Heat-saving film is also used to insulate wooden windows. You can do this yourself, since there is nothing complicated in working with film. To do this you will need double-sided tape, a stationery knife, scissors and ordinary (not construction) household hair dryer for compacting the film after gluing. Before installing it, you need to remove the handles from the window.

Windows with heat-saving film pasted

If the film inflates like a sail, there are drafts somewhere inside the frame. You will have to remove it, disassemble the frame, go over it outside and inside along the glass with transparent silicone sealant and repeat the gluing. Torn film can be easily repaired with ordinary stationery tape.

Heat-saving film increases the room temperature by 4-5 degrees and keeps it at a constant level for eight hours. This is one of the simplest, cheapest and effective ways allowing to insulate residential or production room. It’s not for nothing that heat-saving film is sometimes called “third glass”.

Work order:

  • Separate the layers of film from each other. In the package it is usually folded in half, that is, if when folded its dimensions are: 3 x 1 m, then when glued it will be 2 x 3 m in size - 6 square meters. m. They disconnect it in the same way as opening ordinary plastic bags - by blowing strongly into its edge. You should not peel the film with a knife, so as not to damage it.
  • On a clean, flat surface, cut the film, taking into account the gluing allowance (overlay on the mounting tape) of at least two centimeters on each side.
  • Apply double-sided mounting tape around the perimeter of the cleaned and degreased window frame.
  • Together with your partner, holding the film suspended, glue it to the tape. If the film wrinkles, it’s okay; later you can smooth it out with a hairdryer. The main thing is that it is attached to the frame around the entire perimeter.
  • In the spring, the film can be removed and a new one can be pasted in the fall. Double-sided tape leaves almost no marks, but if the frame still gets dirty, it can be easily cleaned with alcohol or a special compound (“Antisilicone”). However, if the room has an air conditioner, the insulating film does not need to be removed. In summer, it will help keep the room cool, not warm.

Insulation of slopes

Insulate window slopes with plastic or wooden frames The easiest way is to use drywall or ready-made sandwich panels. Insulation with plasterboard panels is carried out as follows:

  1. Cut a groove no more than one centimeter deep around the perimeter of the window. This can be done with a knife, screwdriver or special tools.
  2. Cut the plates the right size made of moisture-resistant plasterboard. You can take a regular one, but then you will have to cover it with a moisture-proof primer in several layers and dry it. After this, you can insert the workpieces into the grooves, starting from the side slopes (they will serve as support for the top one).
  3. Fill the cavities between the wall and the plates with polyurethane foam, and apply masking tape. Support the upper slope wooden beam or other supports. Once the foam has hardened, both the tape and the supports can be removed. Prime the finished slope and paint or wallpaper it. Seams between plasterboard slopes and window frame filled with acrylic sealant.

Laying insulation in the groove

Insulating slopes with sandwich panels is even easier. Attach the U-shaped profile around the entire perimeter of the window frame. Since sandwich panels are thicker than drywall, cutting grooves for them, as in the previous case, will not work.

Now cut the slopes of the required size from the sandwich panels and insert them into the fixed profile. The space between the panels and the wall is best filled mineral wool. After that on finished slopes a mounting F-shaped profile is fixed into which the same sandwich panels or plasterboard plates are installed frontally.
