What to put carpet on. How to lay carpet on a wooden floor - we do all the work ourselves. Carpeting, flooring

Floor coverings in our time are distinguished by such diversity that not so long ago there was no trace of them. Laminate, linoleum, parquet, floor tiles and others. The reason for this was fashionable design solutions on the pages of glossy magazines, as well as the natural desire to surround oneself beautiful interior, including the floor.

Carpet has become one of the popular floor coverings. The richness of texture and color made it a favorite among outdoor “clothes”. How much more pleasant is it to walk on soft warm floor. You can get by with carpets, but the difference in favor of carpet is its size. Roll material allows you to cover any large area without overlaps or joints, while the size of the carpet is greatly limited. How to lay carpet is a separate topic, however, if you follow the rules, it does not seem difficult and inaccessible to home craftsmen.

Some characteristics

If you compare carpet with another equally popular floor covering - linoleum, you can see that:

  1. Unlike carpet, linoleum is installed in all rooms except very warm ones - bathhouses and saunas. However, the carpet has a non-slip surface, which eliminates injuries.
  2. Linoleum is a synthetic product, which affects the price. Carpet is not too cheap.
  3. Linoleum is offered only in rolls, while carpet is also available in strips and squares of various sizes.
  4. Spilled drinks, if not removed immediately, may leave stains on carpeting rather than on linoleum, which only needs to be wiped down.

The plus qualities of carpet include its versatility for all rooms, except wet or utility rooms. Its warmth and sound insulation are far superior to linoleum and the durability of individual pieces. The cost varies depending on the naturalness of the coating: the content of natural wool fibers is, of course, more expensive than their synthetic counterparts, but the wear resistance of the “natural product” is much lower.

Methods for producing carpet are divided into woven, tufted and needle-punched (colloquially “fulling”).

Woven is recognized as the most durable and expensive. Due to the rigid base and the use of already dyed thread, the wear resistance of the color and surface is the highest.

By the way, the method of painting has a high value in price. When buying carpet, you may notice areas of the pile that have not been painted to the base. This indicates that the design was applied using a stencil, which will subsequently cause it to be mechanically erased and faded.

How to lay carpet: methods

Free

Fixation around the perimeter of the floor is the most common and convenient option. Does not require special costs: metal or polyurethane thresholds are purchased for fastening. The carpet is spread in a piece on the floor surface, with the edges extending onto the walls, and allowed to stand. After this, the pile is smoothed in one direction, the excess is cut off and pressed with thresholds. All.

Disadvantages of this method: not very strong installation, subsequent appearance of “bubbles”, inability to use a vacuum cleaner - it will simply “suck it up”.

Fixing with tape

This method is used on smooth hard surfaces: tiles, chipboards and others. The main thing is that they are free of dust and perfectly smooth. The tape is glued around the perimeter of the floor, and then in the form of a grid over the entire surface. The layer of protective paper is not removed until the carpet is laid. The material is also laid out on the floor, given time to stand, and the excess is cut off.

After this, carefully roll the carpet back and, starting to remove upper layer paper from the tape, slowly glue it, rolling out the roll. The carpet is finally decorated with baseboards.

Glue methods

Direct bonding means covering the entire surface of the floor with adhesive. As with any other method, the carpet is allowed to sit for a while, the excess is removed, and rolled up.

After application to small area On the floor, the adhesive is allowed to soak in for 10 minutes, then the roll is rolled out and pressed to the floor.

This method is used in high-traffic areas so that the coating does not “come off” from the floor. It is worth considering that this method is almost eternal - replacing the coating will cost effort, depending on the strength of fixation.

The composition of the glue and its dosage must be provided in advance - natural wool Excess glue may cause damage. For this method, use a special spatula with a dispenser; it will help to apply the optimal layer of glue.

Double fixation

This definition refers to the laying of carpet on a backing, which is previously fixed with an adhesive method. Felt, polyurethane, linoleum and others are used as the substrate material. This can provide additional sound and heat insulation.

The disadvantage of this installation is that it cannot be laid on a “warm floor” system, in order to avoid overheating of the elements. Basically, a carpet not exceeding 1 cm in thickness is laid on a warm floor.

Method without using glue

In this case, the floor on which the carpet is laid must be perfectly flat and smooth. All bumps and depressions are completely sealed. Cover the backing. Then planks are installed along the perimeter of the floor with a row of nails driven in at an angle of 45° and directed towards the wall. The carpet fabric is pulled tightly onto the strips and folded, and then fixed with nails.

The method has not become widespread, since it requires a certain skill and it is impossible to talk about how to lay carpet in this way without demonstrating the actions. If you are interested in this particular installation method, it is better to entrust this work to the masters.

Features and nuances of the material

Despite the aesthetic appeal of carpet, many consumers abandon it in favor of other floor coverings. Here are some myths about the material:

  1. Carpet highlights harmful substances. This is wrong. Natural pile, by definition, cannot do this, and if we compare synthetics, then laminate, linoleum and varnished floors will be much more “harmful”.
  2. Carpet causes allergies. No. Dust particles floating in the air become allergens, and the carpet collects them. Only regular cleaning is needed.
  3. Carpet accumulation static electricity. Even if this is so, its influence on a person is negligible and practically not felt.

How to lay carpet correctly, which method to choose - there is no direct answer. It is imperative to consult with masters or “experienced” ones. The network provides a lot of information for a particular installation method. You just have to spend personal time studying them, so that you can then proudly demonstrate your own work. The question of how to lay carpet is settled. Good luck!

Carpet – flooring, which has many advantages. It is warm, aesthetic, wear-resistant and, most importantly, affordable. With its help, it is easy to implement any design ideas: a correctly selected carpet will definitely fit harmoniously into the interior. The coating is ideal for bedrooms and children's rooms, where a feeling of coziness and comfort is especially important. You can walk on the carpet barefoot, it provides good thermal insulation and gives a pleasant tactile sensation. This coating is also distinguished by the speed of flooring - if you follow all the nuances, laying carpet with your own hands will be easy and hassle-free.

Carpet calculation rules

If you do not want to encounter a shortage or excess of material during the process of laying the flooring, make an accurate calculation of it before going to the store. It is optimal that the entire room is covered with one whole piece of material. Why? Firstly, it is more aesthetically pleasing. Secondly, this way the coating will last much longer.

Carpet is a warm, beautiful and affordable floor covering for the home, which you can easily lay with your own hands, without outside help.

Draw a plan of the room, which will show all the doorways, partitions, niches, etc. and measure all the necessary distances. Carpet should be purchased with a small margin - 5-10 centimeters for each side.

How to prepare the base before starting work?

Before you begin laying the flooring, you should carefully prepare the base.

If the “base” for the material is concrete, you need to fill in all the unevenness, thoroughly clean and prime the surface. Laying carpet on a concrete floor without treating it with a primer is fraught with the constant “influx” of dust from under the covering - you will have to stand guard almost around the clock with a vacuum cleaner.

Concerning wooden floors, then they can be “processed” in two ways:

  1. cover the surface chipboard sheets, fill the joints, treat everything with a primer.
  2. remove protruding parts (nail heads, screws), scrape the surface, prime and fill with self-leveling mixture.

To prevent the carpet from deteriorating and wearing out, it is advisable to lay a high-quality backing underneath it. It has been proven that it can extend the life of carpet by at least one and a half times. The underlayment gives the surface elasticity and strength, with it the floor will be even warmer and the sound insulation will be even better. This “bonus layer” will help create the effect of a dense and thick carpet, even if the covering itself is thin. The underlay, like carpet, should be purchased with a reserve.

The underlay provides the carpet with additional strength and elasticity, and also significantly extends its service life - by one and a half to two times

Methods for laying carpet

Carpeting can be done in the following ways:

  • free installation with fixation around the perimeter
  • installation using double-sided tape;
  • adhesive fixation;
  • double gluing (if a backing is used);
  • laying with gripper slats (stretching).

The specific technology for laying carpet is selected depending on:

  • the type of material and the nature of its base;
  • the purpose of the room, its level of traffic;
  • condition of the subfloor.

Option #1 - loose styling

This is the simplest and quick way install the covering. Suitable for small rooms where you can guarantee to get by with a single piece of carpet.

Work order:

  1. Lay the underlayment, secure it with a stapler every 20 centimeters, seal the joints with tape.
  2. Roll out the fabric with an allowance for the walls (about 5 centimeters).
  3. Using a regular roller, level the coating from the center to the walls.
  4. Make V-shaped cuts in the corners.
  5. Trim off all excess fabric and, stretching it well, secure it with a plinth.
  6. Near the doors, secure the covering with a metal strip.

This method does not require careful surface preparation, no additional waste. But here it is noted relatively low strength of the “structure”.

Here is a video example of the work:

Option #2 - fixation with double-sided tape

This method is suitable for both small and large rooms.

Work order:

  1. Apply double-sided tape first around the perimeter of the floor, and then in the form of a lattice with a side of 50 centimeters. Naturally, the paper film is not removed at this stage.
  2. Lay the carpet on the floor and, gradually removing the film, meter by meter, glue the carpet. Carpet strips are joined end to end.
  3. Trim off excess material with a knife.
  4. Install the plinth.

This option is characterized by ease of installation and the ability to quickly change the coating. But there is a risk of unevenness due to deformation of the adhesive tape.

Fixing with double-sided tape is a fairly simple way of laying carpet, which you can cope with even without the skills of such work.

Also, I would like to note that in addition to adhesive tape, there are special tapes for fixing:

Option #3 - adhesive fixation of carpet

Used in spacious rooms, as well as in rooms with high traffic. This method is quite labor-intensive, but the reward for the work is worthy - absolute reliability of installation.

Work order:

  1. Lay out the carpet.
  2. Fold the canvas in half and apply glue to the opened half of the floor.
  3. Return the bent section to the “original position”, while pressing firmly and, as it were, stretching the coating.
  4. Do the same with the second half of the canvas, as well as with the remaining canvases.
  5. Trim the carpet and install baseboards.

This option guarantees strength, durability of installation and the ability to be used for cleaning washing vacuum cleaner. But reuse of the coating is excluded.

IN large rooms with high traffic, it is recommended to lay the carpet with glue - this will ensure maximum durability of the coating

This method is most often used in production premises, hotels or trading floors. Where the load on the coating is quite large, there is a need for rigid fixation. In addition, it is better than others for large rooms where several sheets of material have to be joined.

Video example of the work:

Option #4 - “stretching” or choosing practical

This is a glue-free installation method carried out using special gripper slats. It is based on the elasticity of the carpet, its flexibility to tension.

Work order:

  1. Secure grippers around the perimeter of the room.
  2. Lay the backing and secure it with a stapler.
  3. Lay out the carpet.
  4. Using a stretcher, pull the covering onto the slats in all directions.
  5. Trim or fold excess material.
  6. Install the baseboard.

The advantage is that when changing the coating, you can leave the same substrate. But this the method is relevant for rooms whose length and width do not exceed 5 meters, and without sufficient experience it is difficult to carry out such installation.

Laying carpet on stairs

There are two ways to install carpet on flights of stairs. The first - “waterfall” - involves the use of a single piece of material. This installation is only possible on straight stairs.

The second method is called “hat” and can be used both on straight lines and on spiral staircases. Its essence is that each step is covered with a separate piece of material. As a rule, for cutting out carpeting they use paper templates. You can get such a pattern by covering the step and riser with a sheet of paper and pressing it in the corners with a spatula.

Considering the increased load on the surface, experts recommend using it for flights of stairs. glue method styling This is what it looks like:

Secrets of perfect editing

To appearance the carpet has not deteriorated during installation and subsequent operation, be sure to take into account the following nuances:

  • Before installation, the coating must rest at room temperature;
  • with a straight line adhesive fixation you need to closely monitor whether bubbles or “humps” appear. Pay maximum attention to high-quality rolling of the coating, since after the surface has dried, defects can only be eliminated using radical measures;
  • working with jute-based carpet, adhesive composition it should be applied very carefully, avoiding an “overdose” of it - passing through the natural base, excess glue can irreparably disfigure the pile;
  • the pattern, which continues through the seam, must be perfectly adjusted in length, width and diagonal - otherwise high aesthetics of the coating cannot be achieved;
  • ensure the same direction of the carpet pile, even if there is no pattern or design on the covering;
  • It is better to start cutting the carpet from the center, and not from the corner, in order to prevent unevenness;
  • the joint of the canvases will be less noticeable if it is perpendicular to the window (located in the direction of sunlight);
  • When cutting off excess coating, always leave a small gap between the material and the wall;
  • For about a day after laying the carpet, it is better not to “disturb” it - do not walk on it, do not install furniture;
  • It is recommended to hide interior carpet joints under special thresholds - in stores you can find devices for every taste and color.

The ease of use of the floor covering largely depends on its correct installation. Violation of technology will lead to earlier wear. Proper carpet installation is not like this difficult task and you can handle it on your own. And it won't take that much time.

Carpet installation can vary. The choice of a specific method depends on the purpose and size of the room. But in order to make a final decision, you need to take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations. So, here are the styling technologies that exist:

There is one more point. It is recommended to lay a special underlay under the carpet. Even if a covering with a very short and dense pile is used, some substrates will give a feeling of softness - when the foot “sinks” into the covering. But this is not the main thing. The main thing is that when using a carpet underlay, the service life of the coating almost doubles. And another plus is increased sound insulation.

Carpet underlay - types, choice

If you want to have a soft, cozy floor on which you can not only walk, but also sit and lie on, it would also be nice to lay a backing under the carpet. This layer makes it possible not only to get a soft floor, but also to make it easier to remove the coating and change it. And if a dense and thick underlay is laid, it will also improve sound insulation. Not dramatically, of course, but it will be quieter.

Laying carpet with backing takes place in two stages. First, the substrate is glued to the prepared base. After it has dried, the coating is laid. There can be any method of fixing the carpet to the backing. Again, it depends on the load and the presence of furniture on wheels, the need for replacement, etc.

The substrate can be:

  • textile;
  • felt (natural felt or synthetic);
  • reinforced;
  • foamed vinyl;
  • polyurethane foam materials;
  • rubber (corrugated or flat).

In principle, you need to select according to a set of characteristics, but it is important that the substrate is elastic. It’s easy to check its elasticity: you need to crush it. If it crumples up without effort, it won’t fit. If you managed to squeeze only slightly and after removing the force it immediately returned to its previous shape - it’s normal. Some types of substrates (rubber, for example) cannot be wrinkled at all. But it also depends on the thickness. Optimal for home and apartment - 0.65-1.00 cm.

By the way, if you have linoleum laid on the floor and it hasn’t come off, hasn’t come off in waves, but has simply lost its appearance or become boring, it can also be used as a backing. I mean, it doesn’t have to be deleted.

How to lay carpet on linoleum? Yes, in any way. Carpet with a rubberized layer can be laid using any method. Even if it’s just secured with tape. It is better to glue softer felt-based options, but not with glue, but with a retainer (read below).

Foundation requirements

In order for the carpet to serve for a long time and not lose its appearance, it must be laid on a flat base. Since the coating is “hairy” and elastic, there are no special requirements for evenness. The coating will follow the contours of the base. But in places where there are sharp changes, abrasions form after a while - here the coating is subject to increased wear. To prevent this from happening, here's what to avoid:

  • Sudden changes in height - steps, holes.
  • Unstable foundation.
  • Dust, debris, sand.

All these shortcomings are easily eliminated. With dust and debris, everything is generally clear - thoroughly clean with a vacuum cleaner before installation. It is better to eliminate irregularities. If there are noticeable differences in height, they can be sanded or filled with putty if it is a plank floor or covered with a repair mixture if the base is concrete. If you don’t want to buy repair materials, you just need to mix cement (1 part) with sand (3-4 parts), add a little PVA and dilute with water. But the disadvantage of this composition is that it must be left for at least two weeks so that there is no excess moisture in the base. Repair crews work faster.

If you want to lay carpet on a wooden floor, you must first level it. You don't have to do this to do this. You can sand a board or lay plywood under the carpet. Plywood is expensive these days, so anything thick and durable will do. sheet material(GVL, etc.).

You can lay carpet on any dry and level base: on a concrete, wooden floor, on laid plywood, OSB and other materials

If you want to lay carpet on a concrete floor, then you don’t have to put anything on the screed if it is dry and level. But for a more comfortable feeling, you can use a backing or lay plywood. If only for now. If necessary, you need to take care of waterproofing.

How to join carpet

First of all, try to make a joint not in an area where people walk or that is constantly in sight, try to calculate it so that most of the joint was under the furniture. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not critical. You just need to make the joint neat. There are two ways to join carpet.

First way

The first option is suitable for coverings without a pattern and with short pile without loops. We carry out cutting on the spot - after we have laid out the coating “on permanent place registration." The joint turns out perfect.

Next, glue the carpet at the joint. We turn the covering to the sides, apply glue or glue double-sided tape. We return the coating, smooth it, press it. When fixing, we try to make the connection without any gaps at all. It has some elasticity, so everything is real.

Second way

The second method of joining two pieces of carpet is both simpler and more difficult. Only this is available on the surface with drawings. First, the edge of one piece is trimmed - between the loops. The factory edge is rarely normal. But if you don’t have any flaws, you can do it without trimming. The second piece is laid with the selection of the pattern (if necessary). If the edge does not meet somewhere, cut again between the loops.

When joining carpet, the choice of method depends on the availability of the pattern.

This method is usually used for carpet with medium and long pile. Small errors are not visible, as they are covered with pile. But it is still possible to achieve an almost perfect match when gluing. When laying carpet with glue, fixative or tape, you can slightly stretch or tamp the covering until it matches perfectly. You know how to join carpet. To decide, you can try both techniques on small scraps. This way you will understand what will be best in your case.

Free installation of carpet and fixation with tape

To lay carpet in a free-flowing manner, you need to know some tricks. First, if it is not possible to cover the floor in one piece, the joint is glued. There is no way without this. The simplest option is to fix the joint with double-sided tape. Two strips of double-sided tape on both sides of the seam.

You need to cut the carpet sharp knife, placing a board or plywood down

Second. You cannot lay only material brought from the store. We bring the carpet into the house and let it sit for several days - at least two for sure. Next comes the actual carpet installation. First, we measure the exact dimensions of the room. We assume that there should be a gap of 5-8 mm to the walls. This is the so-called compensation gap. It allows the coating to expand and shrink with changes in humidity and temperature. If you lay the coating closely at once, “waves” will appear on the coating as the temperature rises.

Technology for laying carpet under baseboards

So, we cut the carpet to the required size and lay it out in the room. That's not all. There are a few more steps.

Loose laying carpet is suitable for rooms no larger than 12 square meters. With an area of up to 20 squares, you can glue it with tape. It must be glued around the perimeter and in stripes every meter. Additional stripes at the junction.

We use tape

The technology for laying carpet on tape is not too different. We start work after it has rested for several days, cut it a little smaller than the size, wait a couple of days. If the gap remains within the desired limits, we begin to fasten it. We turn the covering away from the walls towards the center. We fix the tape in the designated places and along the walls. If you will fix the covering with skirting boards, then glue it at a distance of about 20 cm parallel to the walls. With free flooring “up to the baseboards” we glue the tape right next to them.

Laying carpet under the baseboard is suitable for small rooms up to 12 square meters in area

If necessary, roll the covering and apply tape in the previously occupied area. Then remove the protective tape and roll out the coating. It's simple. It is important that when fixing the carpet, it is rolled out gradually, without waves. To do this, smooth it using a board, pressing it with its edge. You can also use a large spatula.

How to lay carpet on a gripper

Laying carpet on a gripper is one of the types of free installation. It’s just that the coating does not lie under its own weight, but is slightly stretched and fixed to the pins of the grip rail. Needed for work special tools. They cost a lot, so it’s unlikely that anyone will buy them for one-time use. In general, we will describe this method, rather, for familiarization.

These are grippers. But this method of installation is now unpopular

A gripper is a plank of wood with spikes protruding at a certain angle. The slats are nailed to the floor close to the walls. The covering is cut out with a margin - for the curvature of the walls. The carpet is laid in the middle of the room and rolled out to the walls. Using another device, it is pulled and hooked onto the protruding spikes. The excess is trimmed with another special device flush with the wall. The edge is covered with a strip of the same carpet.

Gluing

In large rooms (more than 20 square meters in area) or with heavy loads on the coating, The best way carpet laying - gluing. But today, gluing can be different.

The carpet can be laid using glue or fixation

Types of carpet adhesive

Just a few years ago, gluing carpet was the main technique. It was glue that was used. But in this case it is difficult to remove the coating. Often it delaminates - part remains glued to the base, part comes off. Today there is a composition called fixation. It does not harden completely, but forms a sticky layer. Similar to the type found on adhesive tape. That is, after treatment with fixation, the entire floor becomes a huge tape and the carpet can be re-laid several times. How much depends on the smoothness of the base. If it's felt, there will be hairs left on the glue. And “several” in this case means two or three. If the base is rubberized, then you can peel it off up to a dozen times.

So, there are two types of carpet adhesives:

  • Glue. Glues to the base. When dismantled, part of the coating remains glued. It needs to be removed somehow. When applying, use a B1 spatula. Average consumption 450-500 g per square meter.

  • Latch. Creates a sticky film (like tape) that simply holds the coating in place. When dismantling, the coating is completely removed; individual “hairs” may remain. If it is necessary to replace the adhesive composition, it is removed with a special remover. Carpet fixing is applied with a velor roller or spatula A1. Approximate consumption is 150-200 grams per square meter.

So installation with fixation is more reliable than with tape. If it doesn’t stick very well right away, you can re-lay it without any problems. Or remove the dirty carpet and clean it, and then lay it again. But how to glue the carpet to the floor is up to you. Maybe you trust more regular glue. That's your business.

Latch technology

Laying carpet with fixation differs from conventional gluing in that after applying the composition you have to wait some time - 20-30 minutes until the composition dries and stops getting dirty. It's easy to check - just touch it with your finger. If it sticks but remains clean, you can glue it. And again, the delivered coating must rest at home for at least two days. Next, you can begin installation.

Here is the technology for laying carpet for fixation:

As you can see, attaching the carpet to the clamp is not too difficult. The best part is that if it doesn't work out, you can try again. So you don't have to worry too much. And there's no need to rush. Carpet installation can last as long as you need, since the fixing layer does not change over time. Comfortable.

Laying carpet with glue

When using a traditional adhesive composition, the technology is different, but only in terms of working with the glue itself. The procedure - laying out the carpet, trimming, rolling - all this is exactly the same. Only after applying the glue do not wait, but immediately roll out the coating and immediately smooth it out. The task is to press well so that no swelling occurs.

When laying carpet with glue, you need to spread the base and roll out the covering

To properly glue the carpet to the floor, you need to act quickly. The period of possible correction is far from endless. Therefore, we quickly apply glue to the second half and glue it, ensuring that the seam matches. While the glue has not set, you can try to tear off the previously glued edge, if necessary. But if time has already passed, it is better not to take risks and achieve a match using the more “fresh” part. That is, all corrections are made only with the later laid half.

Reading time ≈ 9 minutes

Carpet is considered one of the softest and most pleasant to the touch floor coverings. However, many people do not know how to properly lay carpet at home and make several serious mistakes. As a result, it is not possible to obtain maximum comfort from this floor covering. In this article you will learn about the basic rules for laying carpet in rooms.

A properly selected carpet creates a feeling of coziness and comfort in your home. Fortunately, choose suitable material won't be a big deal. The assortment of modern stores is rich in its types and colors. And here correct styling coating remains a mystery even to experienced designers interior

Features of carpet

The coating has a synthetic base, so it is not disturbed by insects. It also does not accumulate much dirt and dust, which distinguishes it from classic carpets. In addition to this, the carpet has a number of other features:

Before you need to do a few things preparatory work.

Preparing the premises

The preparatory work will differ depending on the type of floor, but it boils down to one thing - the maximum area where the carpet will be laid.

If the floor is wooden, then the following steps are performed:

For concrete floors with big amount It is easiest to screed the uneven surfaces. You can find out about this on our website. After the concrete has hardened, grinding should be carried out.

Important! At the end of the preparatory work, you need to thoroughly wash the surface. Some carpet installation methods require clean floors to perform the job properly.

All foreign objects (cabinets, beds, tables, chairs, etc.) are removed from the room. The doors are also removable so that they do not block the passage and do not interfere with the work. If skirting boards are installed, they must be removed, checked for defects and, if necessary, replaced with new ones.

Plays an important role during installation temperature regime. The minimum temperature at which it is allowed to lay carpet is 15 degrees Celsius.

Preparing the floor covering

Some carpet components may behave differently when different conditions environment To understand what elasticity and softness it will have, you need to bring it into the room where it will lie and leave it for a day.

Once acclimatized, it will not stretch over time, which will increase its service life.

At the same time, you need to check the carpet for defects, holes, correctness of appearance, color and size. If he is in good condition, it can be used for styling. Otherwise, you must return the material to the seller or exchange it for a quality product.

Preparation of tools and materials

To work you will need the following:

Substrate preparation

The use of an additional gasket between the floor and the carpet significantly improves its properties. Thanks to the underlay, the service life of the carpet is extended, its sound insulation and thermal insulation properties. The following materials are most often used for carpet backing:

Advice! Whether or not to use a backing is up to each person to choose. But it is necessary to take into account that it will make the floor warmer and softer, and will also hide its unevenness. Therefore, the recommendation from the site is to definitely use a substrate if the allocated budget allows it.

Carpet laying

There are three main methods of laying the coating - free, adhesive and stretching. They are distinguished by the complexity of their implementation, the presence of specialized tools and materials, as well as the skills to work with them. Let's look at each method in more detail.

Free way

It is considered the simplest and most accessible. Install the carpet in one piece small spaces Every person can do it independently. To do this, you need to follow the step-by-step instructions, and the photos will help you quickly understand the main idea:

This option has several significant shortcomings, including insufficient strength and evenness. In addition, you can disrupt the even installation by simply rearranging the furniture.

To improve strength, you can improve the method using simple double tape. The installation will be almost identical except for a few points:

Glue method

This method requires the use of adhesives and is suitable for rooms where the coating is changed quite rarely.

In general, the method is similar to the previous one, but instead of double-sided tape, an adhesive composition is used. Full step-by-step instruction as follows:

Advice! If several canvases are laid, then their edges are overlapped on each other, and the floor under them is not coated with glue. Then the carpet is cut in the center of the overlap, forming edges that are adjacent to each other. An adhesive composition is applied to the floor at the points of contact. The coating is leveled with a roller.

This method is often used in places with a large number of people, where reliable fixation of the carpet to the floor is required - offices, educational institutions, commercial enterprises.

If a backing is used, then the double gluing method is used. First, the underlay is glued to the floor, and after the glue dries, the floor covering is laid in the same way.

This video will help you get acquainted in more detail with the procedure for laying carpet with your own hands:

Stretching

Glueless technology or stretching was invented by English interior designers. It is based on elasticity, which is a feature of all carpets. This method is considered the most difficult, requiring special tools and skills to work with them.

During installation, gripper slats will be used - wooden planks with nails driven into them at an angle of 45 degrees. Also an important condition is the presence of a substrate with a thickness equal to the thickness of the slats. Otherwise, differences will form after tension.

This method is good because there is no rigid fixation to the floor, but the coating is in constant tension, does not sag and does not create bumps. If the need arises, the carpet can be easily removed without damaging either the floors or the covering itself.

Now you know how to lay carpet with your own hands, and you can choose the most suitable one for yourself. People who do not have practical skills in working with gripper slats and are not familiar with glueless technology for laying carpets are recommended to use double-sided tape.

This product is considered one of the best options for arranging flooring. In addition to giving the room a cozy atmosphere, this material dampens sounds well, insulates the floor, and caring for it is not difficult. But in order for such a “finishing” surface finish to serve for a long time, it is necessary to know the technology of its installation and carry out all the measures in full - carpet “does not like” installation according to a “simplified scheme”.

Before moving on to the question of how to lay carpet, it is worth noting some features of such a covering.

  • This material has 2 types of base - rubberized or fabric. In the latter case, carpet should not be installed in rooms with excessive humidity, or where water leaks are possible. But if the decision is made, then a number of additional “protective” measures need to be taken.
  • All samples differ in the length of the villi. When choosing material for a specific room, this factor should be taken into account. For example, in rooms with high traffic (for example, a corridor), it is advisable to lay short-pile material, but for a bedroom, long-pile carpet is more acceptable.
  • This coating intensively absorbs dust. If any of your family members have allergic reactions, then cleaning the room (with a vacuum cleaner) will have to be done daily.
  • Carpet can be laid on a base made of any material. The only condition is that it must be as level as possible. This coating is quite soft, so any pothole or bulge on the surface will not create the most pleasant sensation.
  • Carpet is elastic, so wrinkles may form on it during storage and transportation, especially if a long roll is folded in half. Before installation, it is advisable to lay it out on the floor and let it rest (you can moisten it a little with water in the folds). After some time, it will completely restore its shape.
  • When covering a concrete base (or cement screed) it is necessary to provide a backing for the carpet. This will prevent it from absorbing dust particles that may form on such a surface.

Floor finishing with this material can be carried out in almost any room, on any base. Considering the methodology for carrying out the work, we list the entire range of necessary measures. What needs to be done in a particular room (depending on its specifics), what can be neglected, and what has already been done previously - each owner will determine independently. There is no point in explaining that all floors are different (for example, wooden, concrete, already finished with linoleum), so in principle there cannot be a single recommendation. So, it is assumed that the work starts from scratch.

Carpet laying technology

Preparing the base

A big mistake is made by those who believe that at this stage they only need to clean the floor and, if necessary, level it. After all, any base is subject to various influences, and this is not only moisture or temperature fluctuations. Therefore, it needs appropriate surface treatment, which will extend its service life. Moreover, such measures must be carried out both when working with carpet and when using other materials.

Nowadays, plastic products are increasingly used. This - the best option skirting boards for carpet. But if it is traditional (wooden) and requires updating, then you need to paint it before installing it in place. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove paint that gets on the canvas (given its “hairiness”), especially if the material is synthetic. In this case, the use of solvent is excluded.

Cleaning

It is not only about removing debris, removing nails or screws. The base needs to be washed thoroughly. This will make it possible to detect all defects during its inspection (cracks in the screed, dried out, rotten boards, mold, fungus). Eliminating such defects will not only allow you to forget about floor repairs for a long time, but in most cases will also significantly reduce heat loss in the room and the level of humidity.

Treatment

Depending on the base material and the specifics of the room, various preparations are used - antiseptics, water-repellent impregnations. For wood, additionally - fire retardants. If a screed is subsequently made, the processing is carried out after its installation.

Alignment

The methodology is different. A screed is laid on the concrete base (if necessary) or a self-leveling floor is installed (more expensive) using self-leveling mixtures. For plank floors - installation of sheets (slabs) of plywood, MDF and the like (“dry” screed).

Padding

This is done if the material is fixed by gluing or using tape.

If the material is laid on a reinforced concrete slab or screed, then this must be done. There are corresponding products on sale, and their range is quite impressive.

“Fitting” the material

As a rule, it is rarely possible to cover the entire floor with one canvas. Therefore, at least 2 parts, but will have to be joined. Marking the lines for cutting is done on the back side of the material (a pointed piece of soap, chalk). For an even and high-quality cut, it is recommended to use a “shoemaker’s knife” or large tailor’s scissors.

Using small household ones may result in “shaggy” edges. And the work will take a long time.

There are various methods for attaching it to the base. The most suitable one is selected depending on the size of the room and its architectural features(presence of ledges, columns, niches, etc.).

Free styling

Suitable for indoor use only small sizes, and then only if the entire floor can be covered with one sheet, without joining the individual parts. The idea is that the roll is rolled out over the entire area and leveled (smoothed) so that its edges are slightly wrapped onto the walls.

Fixation is done with skirting boards. But if they are plastic, then you need to “fasten” the material around the perimeter with small nails with large heads or adhesive tape. The baseboard should not be lowered under the carpet, as debris will accumulate at the junction points (in the cracks).

The point is that something like a sheathing for carpet is constructed from this tape. Moreover, only double-sided tape is used. It is glued along the installation line of the skirting boards, in doorways. This is the outer contour. If the room has columns, ledges, niches, they are also covered with adhesive tape.

But further - at the discretion of the owner. The point is to securely attach the carpet to the floor throughout the room to prevent it from moving and causing folds and air bubbles. You can build a mesh with cells from adhesive tape over the entire surface required sizes. Another option is to stick it in parallel strips from one corner to the other (diagonally).

When such a “structure” is prepared, the canvas is laid. The top (protective) film is gradually removed from the tape, and the carpet is pressed firmly to the base. After the canvas has been completely rolled out, it needs to be “rolled” well. Anything will do - a rubber roller, even an ordinary rolling pin. The main thing is to achieve reliable fixation.

Gluing

This method is more suitable for administrative and other public buildings. Rarely used in residential premises. If you still decide to install using this method, then you need to take into account the compatibility of the carpet adhesive with the material on which it is installed. Some compounds may react, for example, with laminate, linoleum.

The canvas is fixed securely. But the question is how to then dismantle the coating secured in this way, without significantly damaging the base?

This method can be used if some part of the room is being finished (in the corner, in places where furniture is installed) from the remaining small pieces. But still, this is an extreme case.

Stretching

This method is glueless. The technique is simple, but requires laying a substrate to equalize the height difference between the canvas and the slats.

They are attached to the floor along the perimeter, and small nails are first driven into everything from the back side (through and at an angle). The result is an outer frame with “needles” sticking up, onto which the fabric is stretched.

With this method of fastening, the carpet can be easily replaced if necessary, and the base does not need to be carefully leveled. But here you need an accurate calculation and some experience.

Docking of parts

This issue is worth considering separately, since it is rarely possible to evenly cover the entire floor with one canvas.

First option

If the material does not have long pile, then decorative strips can be used. They are available for sale in large assortment– both in size (width, length) and color. Such products are laid on the seam and attached to the base using self-tapping screws.

Second option

The canvases are stacked on top of each other, with slight overlap. A through cut is made in the middle. After this, the edges are raised a little, and carpet glue is spread under them. All that remains is to press them firmly and fix them in this position with some kind of “weight” (until the adhesive dries).

When connecting individual pieces, pay attention to the direction of the fibers different parts materials matched.

  1. How to lay carpet is up to everyone to decide for themselves. But which one? It should be taken into account that the material is divided into several classes. “21st” is more susceptible to abrasion than others. It is advisable to install it where intensive movement of people is not expected.
  2. Do not throw away pieces of material left after finishing the floor. The carpet has good maintainability. If you carefully place a patch on the damaged area, it will be invisible.
  3. Recommended methods for laying canvases depending on the size of the room:
  • up to 25 m2 – any;
  • up to 100 m2 – all except free space;
  • more than 100 m2 – gluing only.
