The procedure for installing wrought iron gates. Installation of forged metal gates Forged elements for assembling gates

Nothing attracts admiring glances like an interesting beautiful entrance in the courtyard. It is provided by forged gates with a wicket - a true decoration of any yard. Huge selection, individual order, various shapes, artistic patterns entrance structure will satisfy the taste of any homeowner. Let's take a closer look.

Having decided to opt for individual project, which will be brought to life by professional blacksmiths, you will receive () a design highest quality with the best characteristics:

  • long service life;
  • high strength;
  • resistance to corrosion;
  • chic, presentable look.

pros

Possessing special grace and style, forging will suit any style of yard (classical, Japanese, English, country, Provence). The house itself will receive a shadow of originality from forged gates with a gate.

Voiceless option

Main advantages:

  • excellent combination with other materials (wood, granite, marble, other metal);
  • present handmade(many elements are done by hand), which has a positive effect on the product, which becomes unique;
  • forged gates perform a reliable protective function;
  • the gate with forging elements seems airy, but at the same time strong, powerful, reliable;
  • the design justifies its high cost.

The aesthetics, wealth and luxury of such an entrance to the courtyard give additional status to the owners.

Forged elements tolerate well negative influences environment(rain, snow, heat, wind), they are resistant to mechanical damage.

Massive brick pillars

Minuses

It is difficult to install forged products with your own hands; this will require help (several people).

Other disadvantages are:

  • duration of the installation itself;
  • the high cost of the design, especially those made to special order. For example, if forged elements are installed on a metal gate leaf, then the more of them, the more expensive the order will be.

A beautiful option for a private home

Wrought iron gates have two types of construction:

  1. Open (direct frame, grilles with openwork patterns, rods).
  2. Closed (sheet, frame, fixed forging elements).

Recoil

Retractable design

Swing

In combination with corrugated sheeting

The swing structure has two doors that open both inside and outside the courtyard. The mounting is simple, you can install it yourself. You just need to attach the shutters with the help (they support the entire weight of the product structure) to pre-installed fence posts (supporting ones).

The pillars are concreted at least 1 m deep. If the soil is unstable - more than 1.5 m. It is even better to connect two supports underground (under the gate itself). This method will prevent the columns from moving in the future. Also for this purpose, a connecting jumper is made above the gate itself.

Combination of materials

Sliding

Another frequently installed option is sliding gates. They are used not only as entrance gates, but also for homes and offices.

These are the same forged sliding gates. They are especially relevant in areas with dense buildings (they do not require additional space to open the doors). This is a fence that can operate automatically.

The most popular are sliding cantilever doors. They take up very little space and open in any direction (right, left). Reliable, easy to use. To increase comfort, a gate is installed on them.

Massive construction

Advantages

The design has the following advantages:

  • high security (they are not easy to open);
  • strength;
  • good load-bearing capacity;
  • save time, especially in winter (there is no need to clear away all the snow that has fallen, they will open anyway).

Flaws

Among the disadvantages are:

  • they cannot boast of a built-in gate (it will have to be additionally installed - this is a costly affair, takes time, takes energy);
  • the need for individual selection of sections (if you buy ready-made ones, you need to calculate the weight of the product to select the appropriate ones. Usually stores offer standard options);
  • occupy a place near the fence.

Wooden structure

To completely neutralize shortcomings, you will need desire, strength, and financial investments.

Garage

Forged garage doors are a reliable rear. Making them with your own hands will require some tinkering. But you will receive reliable protection with unrivaled decor. This option is especially suitable if you have a very expensive car: you will save yourself from unnecessary worries.

You can make wrought iron gates yourself. There are different types of them. If you are just a beginner blacksmith, stop at a simple task - a simple option, which you decorate with forging elements (forge carefully, slowly). Such gates will already be distinguished by artistic beauty.

Forging will fit into any style, even the most modern. But it is better to combine it with the style of the house, its shade, and other buildings located on the territory.

Option with brick pillars

Wicket options

The presence of a wicket in the design of a forged gate complicates the manufacturing process of the product. After all, the work is completely manual, it requires attention and skill. The more complex and intricate the style, the more expensive a forged shutter will cost.

Usually the gate is installed on the side or in the center of the gate.

A forged gate can also be combined with other materials, just like the gate itself. For example, this is metal flooring and polycarbonate. This way you will protect your yard from prying eyes.

The openwork model of the forged gate looks beautiful. The territory becomes open to view, but not completely. In summer, plants that entwine the metal provide a special decoration.

Stone columns

Advantages and disadvantages

Main advantages:

  • design for every taste;
  • duration of service;
  • high compatibility with various materials(stone, wood, );
  • the design can be simple or intricate, highly artistic;
  • excellent connection decorative elements varied style.

The disadvantages are non-compliance with production technology and high cost.

When making or installing with your own hands, the correct processing of products is as follows:

  1. All metal gates need to be coated with a special primer or nitro paint. The applied product increases the metal’s resistance to various negative external influences.
  2. The material is strengthened and decorated by thermal spraying over the primer (temperature changes and high humidity are not a problem with this product).
  3. Nitro paint is used to paint over the entire canvas plus welding areas. This reliable protection from any damage, which will also disguise the connecting joints of the products.
  4. To prevent the appearance of rust, the gate is treated with an anti-corrosion agent.

Sketch for quick production

The canopy over the gate looks special. It performs a protective function, “defensive” from rain.

It is popular to combine forged gates with other materials. For example, a metal openwork composition is combined with elements. Or polycarbonate - with metal, forging - with. Everything is possible.

The main thing is reliable protection, and the decorative component will not let you down.

Combination of materials

You can order forging in combination with other materials (, polycarbonate,). Standard fencing options are sold, but it is better to choose your own and make it yourself.

It is difficult to get into the yard through such a gate. According to official statistics, they are much less likely to be hacked than gates made of other materials.

Forging with polycarbonate is also used quite actively. It has spread widely in Lately. Polycarbonate sheets are durable, practical and lightweight. But due to forging, they become an excellent and more impressive option than fences made from other materials.

DIY gate installation

Having decided to do everything yourself, before you start installing a forged gate with a wicket, make sure once again that you can do it.

Consider all the difficulties that may arise. Do not forget about the accuracy of execution and the availability of skills for such work.

Frame drawing of the main structure

It is advisable to have professionals handle the installation. This will minimize damage to the product.

To save money, we install garden gates with a wicket yourself and with extreme caution.

Certain tools required:

  • welding;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill;
  • hammer;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • level;
  • ruler (centimeter).

Variety of sketches

Frame corners must be more than 2 mm thick.

Installation of a swing structure

How it all happens:

  1. For proper installation of the structure, we first prepare the place.
  2. Then we make markings (we check the pre-made drawing) and concrete the supports.
  3. While the posts are standing, we are simultaneously assembling the gate frame.
  4. We hang the gates on the posts, adjust the leaves, and trim them.

DIY installation diagram

For self-installation experts advise choosing swing double-leaf gates. They are easier to install.

With a significant increase in aesthetics of perception entrance group Artistic forging of gates improves the ergonomics of operation and increases the status of the owner of the site. The openwork elements chosen as the filling material for the sashes have less windage compared to solid sheets made of corrugated sheets.

Sections of fences decorated with elements of cold and hot forging cost three times less than gates. In the first case, the manufacturer indicates the price linear meter excluding the height of the structure. To buy a gate with forging elements in the photo below, you will have to operate with square meters, take into account the complexity, repeatability of the pattern and ornament.

Hot or cold forging is the most expensive and beautiful way metal processing. The material takes on the necessary forms, interior items and building structures are created from it. Gates, which are made from artistic forged elements, are durable, beautiful and reliable.

Unfortunately, forging is a rather expensive type of metal processing, so not many people can please themselves with custom-made products. But there is a way out - master cold forging yourself.

Types of forging

hot

In this method, the metal is heated to a temperature at which the material becomes pliable and soft. This is followed by mechanical processing of the metal by stamping, manual or hydraulic forging. This method of metal processing is very complex, labor-intensive, and requires special tools and knowledge physical and mechanical properties metal

A simpler, but no less labor-intensive method of processing metal without heating. During cold forging, the metal is bent under great pressure. To carry out cold forging of metal, special tools are required.

Protective structures

This type of fencing can be safely called a budget option. All forging elements are stamped. The frame and stiffeners are made of thick metal; the stamping elements are also not distinguished by their elegance and beauty. Strong and powerful gates perform their main function - protecting personal territory.

These designs can easily be called exclusive works of art. Most often, this type of gate is made to order according to individual drawings. All elements of the doors are made by hand using hot forging. The unusual type of gate is primarily a decoration of the territory.

Combined gates

This type of design combines artistic forging and stamped elements, thanks to which you can become the owner of an exclusive, durable and beautiful gate at an affordable price.

Gates made from elements cold forging, are a prefabricated structure where all parts are fastened by welding. The elements themselves can be purchased at finished form or do it yourself.

It is important to know that the production of gates with swing sections is divided into 7 stages.

  1. Drawing development.
  2. Selection of material and tools.
  3. Installation of support pillars.
  4. Manufacturing of frame frames.
  5. Manufacturing of forging elements for filling sashes.
  6. Fastening of fittings and decorative ornaments.
  7. Painting of structures.

How to make a drawing or choose a gate design

At this stage of work, you need to be guided by two rules: the gate must be strong and reliable, and the design must also be beautiful and original. It is not difficult to combine these criteria.

It is important to think about the geometry of the valves. The shape can be any: from classic square to exclusive, with broken top lines, radius or ellipse. Also important are the height and width of the structure, the location of the stiffeners, the selection of fittings, and the distance between the forging elements. It is advisable to frame the gate in such a way that people or animals cannot enter the territory through the bars.

Some gate models are supplemented with blank sheets of iron, on top of which decorations made of forged elements are attached. Blind gates with forged elements look beautiful and block the view of the site from the street.

Material and tools for making blind forged gates

  1. Welding electrical apparatus for final welding.
  2. Gas welding machine for spot welding.
  3. Powerful vise mounted on a flat surface.
  4. Pattern yews with a long lever.
  5. Set of electrodes.
  6. Grinding machine with a disc for grinding and polishing metal.
  7. Materials for creating the structure
  8. Pillars for support.
  9. Mortar for pouring pillars.
  10. Bricks.
  11. Profile pipe for the frame of the sashes
  12. Steel sheets for blind filling, material thickness not less than 1 mm.
  13. Sheet steel for the manufacture of forged peaks with sharp tips.
  14. Tetrahedrons to create the base of the peaks. The width of the ends is 1.4 mm. If you use thicker blanks, it will be more difficult to twist them into a spiral. Workpieces with smaller edge widths may break during the twisting process.

As can be seen from the description of the material used, the gate design is different gothic style: blank fill flaps, on top of which peaks with sharp tips are attached on the front side. The gate will have a stylish, unusual and impregnable appearance.

Because steel structure The doors have quite a lot of weight; the supporting pillars must be reliable. Support pillars require a metal pipe with a diameter of at least 25 cm, as well as facing bricks.

Step 1

It is necessary to mark the position of the pillars. At the same time, one should not forget that metal constructions In the future they will be covered with bricks. Therefore, it is advisable to calculate the thickness of the material in advance.

Step 2

To attach the pillars, you need to dig two deep holes, at least a meter deep. The width of the pit should not exceed the diameter of the metal pipe by 10 cm. Otherwise, the post may become skewed after hanging a heavy sash.

Step 3

The steel pipe must be inserted into the hole and covered with crushed stone. It is advisable to compact the crushed stone tightly. The pipe must be level, otherwise there will be problems with opening and closing the gate leaves.

Step 4

Pouring crushed stone. For these purposes, you need to dilute cement and sand in proportions of 1 to 3 and mix thoroughly. Then the dry mixture is diluted with water. The solution should be liquid and homogeneous.

Step 5

The resulting mixture is poured into pits with crushed stone. The position of the pillar is re-checked. The solution dries for several days.

Step 6

Welding shanks to the posts - fastenings on which the return curtains for the sashes will be located. The shank should be at least 6-7 cm wide and protrude from under the bricks. If the gate leaves are too heavy, it is recommended to weld 3 bars to each post at the same distance.

Step 7

Reinforced pillars must be covered with bricks. Brick laying is carried out using a trowel. Vertical joints between bricks should not border.

The design of the doors will be standard - rectangular frames filled with steel sheets.

Step 1

Selecting the location where the gate frame will be welded. It is important that the surface is absolutely flat, otherwise the frame will twist.

Step 2

The profile is cut into pieces of the required size. When cutting metal, it is important to observe the geometry of the angles along which the weld will pass.

Step 3

Workpieces laid out on a flat surface are caught spot welding. Then a control measurement of all structural elements is carried out and the frame is checked for deformation and distortion.

Step 4

If everything is in order, then you can begin the final welding of the elements. For rigid fastening of the profile during fillet welding, you can use clamps. Then, using a grinder, you should clean out all the sagging on the seams.

Step 5

Fastening blind steel sheets. Steel sheets, cut to the size of the frame, are placed inside the profile and welded around the perimeter. The seams are cleaned. The draft version of the sashes is ready.

Production of cold forging elements

Step 1

Steel strips with a thickness of 4-5 mm and a width of at least 6 cm are cut into 15-centimeter sections. Then lines are drawn on the steel fragments along which the upper corners need to be cut off.

Step 2

Using a grinder, the steel is cut according to the marks. The result is long triangles with a pointed apex.

Step 3

Giving the workpiece visual volume. To do this, use a grinder and emery disc the edges of the peak are processed. The element receives a shape: a pointed top, thin edges at the corners and a thick middle.

To decorate a fence, you need to make many of these elements. It is important to cut one pattern at a time so that the peaks are the same size and shape.

Base peak

For these purposes, tetrahedral steel is required. To decorate the gate, you can use different lengths of rods with sharp tips. For example, using sharpened peaks to create a visual radius on closed gate leaves.

Step 1

A metal rod is cut into required sizes. Since the peaks will be attached in a mirror manner, you need to carefully consider the size of each element so that the overall design looks perfect.

Step 2

Marking on the rod. If the turns are spaced every 15 cm, then you need to mark these segments with a pencil. Then you should start twisting the turns.

Step 3

The rod is clamped into a large stationary vice at the zero mark. The same rod is fixed into the pattern yews at the 15 cm mark. Then you need to turn the yew one turn. One turn is ready. You can make several turns on one segment. The main thing is that the mirror bases of the peaks are symmetrical, and that there are an equal number of turns along the entire length at the same distance.

All tetrahedral workpieces are processed in this way.

Step 4

Then all decorative elements are assembled. The bases of the peaks are welded with sharp tips.

Assembling the gate structure

All decorative ornaments welded to the front gate leaves according to the diagram. It is important that the location of the peaks on the two doors is symmetrical. Forging elements in the form of curls or ornaments can be placed on the steel sheets of the doors themselves. These are quite complex parts; it is best to purchase them ready-made.

Then you need to weld the hinges to the ends of the sashes. They should be located at the same distance as the return loops on the poles. The two lower hinges are welded in one direction, then the sashes are hung. The topmost loop is attached in the opposite direction and welded to hanging structures. This is necessary so that the doors cannot be removed.

At the junction of the valves with reverse side The staples for the lock are welded on. You can also use more modern locking hardware. This is at the gate owner's discretion.

Painting the gate

All steel elements must be carefully treated with an anti-corrosion coating. White plaque that appears after treatment must be removed with a dry cloth. Then you can begin to finish painting the structure. Modern covering materials not only protect the metal, but also decorate it. Gates can be stylized as antique by covering them bronze paint or highlight forging elements with gold.

It is important to know that every few years the gate structure needs to be cleaned and repainted.

If you do not want to manufacture forging elements yourself, you can simplify the manufacture of gates by ordering all the parts from specialized companies.

This method of making gates can safely be called amateur: you just need to create or use a ready-made design drawing, calculate the number of required elements, order and independently assemble the gate structure using gas or electric welding.

Homemade gates will become a real decoration of any site; it is also worth noting their reliability, durability and safety.

Install beautiful gate on your own site without the involvement of specialized companies or private blacksmiths. To do this, just stock up on the necessary tools and free time to make forged gates and gates with your own hands.

The result can be much more interesting than standard project from a commercial organization. In addition, you can significantly save on the cost of work, which will allow you to purchase more expensive materials for manufacturing.

Preliminary preparation for work

Before starting the process, it is worth deciding on the room where the work will be carried out, the available tools and equipment, as well as the necessary material in sufficient quantity.

Almost every man has the basic tool for making forged gates in his workshop or garage:

  • yews (it is advisable to have several types);
  • hammers (from small ones weighing up to 0.2 kg to three to five kilogram sledgehammers);
  • angle grinder (it is preferable to choose one with soft start);
  • punches with hardened tips (required for drilling holes);
  • electric and gas welding machines (gas welding can be replaced with a forge, and for electric welding choose 2 or 3 mm electrodes);
  • blacksmith pliers (needed for working with hot elements, but can be replaced with tongs).

To make a forged gate with your own hands you will need forge, which can be purchased or made. You also need a device for twisting metal rods. The price of such a mechanism is about 300 dollars.

Before making forged gates and wickets with your own hands, you will need to prepare a sketch of the future product and calculate the required amount of material. The most commonly used grades of metal are:

  • square profile pipe (from which the frame and racks are formed);
  • tetrahedral steel rod (the cross-section should be 14x14 mm, since the smaller one will bend, and the larger one will be difficult to process);
  • sheet metal 5 mm thick (the base for the peak is made from it; when calculating the lengths, a 30% cutting cost is taken into account).

Manufacturing process

The prepared sketch for the manufacture of forged gates must be turned into a drawing. To do this, we draw all the elements to scale and plot the overall dimensions. Next, you will need to make the required number of patterns and ornaments.

The main elements of almost all drawings are:

  • peak;
  • spiral rods;
  • radius figures.

How to make sashes

It is necessary to lay the frame of future sashes on the leveled surface. It is usually made from profile pipe square section. The surface must be checked for parallelism using a level. If you do not follow this, the doors will simply not come together, since they will have the shape of a propeller. It is also important to maintain right angles when mating pipes. The parallelogram will give a gap, and it will be almost impossible to fix it.

You can check right angles by measuring the diagonals; their lengths should be perfectly equal.

Welding seams must be cleaned using a grinder. In the event that the metal has “begun” a little and has changed shape, slight straightening with hammers is allowed.

Creating patterns

Each element must be pre-fabricated and only then assembled into a single structure.

Forged peaks

To make peaks, strips of sheet steel are cut approximately according to the dimensions of future products. Next, it is heated in an oven to a temperature of 600-7000C. Visually, the color of the metal appears white at this temperature. We give the shape volume using hammers and anvils according to the given dimensions. Next, let the metal cool.

If the production used structural steel grades 40 or 45, then you should not dip it in water to quickly lower the temperature. Such a process will lead to its hardening and sometimes to the appearance of unnecessary scale.

If the material was grade 3 steel, then you can safely immerse even a hot product in water. This does not cause low carbon unalloyed materials to increase in hardness.

You can remove unnecessary blemishes using an angle grinder. It will also help to give final form product work on a sharpening machine. In this case, you should use protective casing for stone and special glasses for working with abrasive material.

twisted rod

To form a spiral rod, metal with a square profile is cut. You can use the drawing lengths, adding 15-20% for bending. We fix the rod in powerful yews rigidly fixed to the workbench. On the other hand, we use pattern yews that can rotate 3600 around an axis.

First, we make chalk marks at the same distance to form the spiral pitch. As a rule, a step of about 10-15 cm looks nice. We turn the pattern yews one turn each time, and then move them to a new place for the next scroll. We repeat this along the entire length of each prepared rod.

Having removed the workpiece from the yews, we straighten it. To do this, you can “roll” the rod on a flat surface and see in which direction the metal is bent.

Twisted elements for gates

Such a structural element can be made from two rings from a pipe, or using a bending machine. The first option is often used. However, it needs welding. The ring is cut to the same height, which is equal to the profile side of the connecting rod. So, if we plan to take a 14x14 mm rod as the basis for the design, then we cut the ring into 14 mm cuts.

By cutting the rings in one place, we get an open circle. We weld one of its sides by welding to a rod. We curl the other side into the desired pattern using hammers. We clean the welding seam on a machine or using a grinder.

On bending machine no welding operations required. It is enough to take a rod and, having fixed one of the sides, bend the workpiece over the other side between stationary axes installed at a certain distance.

Before bending, it is advisable to heat the metal so that it does not burst during the process of changing shape.

General assembly and final processing

The prepared structural elements must be assembled on the surface where the sash frames are located. All parts must be arranged according to the prepared drawing. Now the patterns and frame are welded into a solid structure. The same operation is done with the second leaf and gate.

The structure must be treated with an anti-corrosion agent. After drying, this “chemistry” may cause a whitish coating of salts to appear. You need to get rid of it with a rag.

A place for attaching locks is prepared on the sash and gate. Canopies are also welded on both sashes. There is no need to install additional valves. They are most often done after installing the gate in a permanent place.

In order to produce sliding forged gates, it is necessary to provide for the installation of levers and cable wiring. In this case, awnings and other elements of swing gates will not be useful. Also, the design elements must fit harmoniously into the design with this opening option.

Features of swing structures

For the racks you will need holes at least one meter deep. They are flooded concrete mortar and allow the structure to harden so that no deformation occurs during installation. Since the weight of the gate is quite large, the use of a crane will be required.

Care must be taken to ensure that the gate and wicket are on the same line. To do this, carefully measure the location of the racks relative to each other. The verticality of the installation is checked using plumb lines.

What you need to know to properly roll back the sash

Automation of opening/closing gates can be done using a sliding mechanism. If you install it on a forged gate, then you need to take care of the light weight of such a structure. Otherwise, powerful motors and reinforced components will be required, which will lead to unnecessary increases in cost.

The retractable console is made of profile pipes with a thin wall. The rear side is usually made of a metal profile with a thickness of no more than 0.3 mm, and the forged elements are on the outside.

It is possible to make the back base from polycarbonate, this way it will be possible to further reduce the load.

When choosing the design of sliding gates, their specifics are taken into account, since there is only one section. Central symmetry in the drawing or just a straight line of peaks above the structure will look harmonious.

Among the many types of gates that their owners are proud of, gates with forged elements are the most beautiful and sophisticated. Forged gates, consisting of many decorative elements, allow you to create unique metal compositions. Today, purchasing a forged structure or ordering its production from a craftsman will not be cheap.

Forged gate leaves in dark color

It is much more profitable to make forged gates with your own hands. Moreover, ready-made kits are available for sale. forged products. They are welded into a single structure, forming original patterns. To make the work more productive, a diagram or drawings are used. This is how not only gates are made, but also gates and even iron fences.

Sample samples of forged elements for making a fence from one of the companies

Types of forged gates

All fences produced by forging are divided into 2 categories:

  1. Fully metal gates or gates. They consist only of decorative elements, corners and rods. This design includes only profile metal products, as well as forged elements. This is the most expensive type of fencing.

Fully forged gate

  1. Combined gates or wickets. They are based on wood, polycarbonate and other materials. And iron decorative inclusions only complement the ensemble, giving it individuality. Such fences are no less beautiful, but not so expensive.

Combined gate option - wood and forging

Methods for making forged fences

Forged gates can be made independently in two ways:

  1. The professional way. All elements used to make the gate are made by the master himself, using blacksmithing skills and tools. This is a very expensive manufacturing method.
  2. Amateur way. Sets of decorative elements are used (balls, peaks, rings, curls, spirals and other zigzags). By purchasing ready-made kits, you can make fences, gates or forged gates with your own hands. The master is only required to form a single pattern from them. Welding and grinding skills will be required.

Making forged gates with your own hands

To make beautiful iron fences, you need to follow a certain sequence of actions. All work can be divided into several stages.

Preparation of tools and materials

To work you may need:

  • Welding inverter with a set of electrodes.
  • Grinder machine.
  • Materials for gate and fence frames.
  • Forged iron elements.
  • Material for blind filling of the structure (if used).
  • Support pillars.
  • Materials for concreting pillars.

Documentation development

The first step is to draw up drawings of the future structure. They should indicate the dimensions and shape of the valves. The shape can be classic, in the form of a rectangle, or have some special top line. The diagram also contains the location of the stiffeners, the distances between them and other elements, and the location of decorative inserts. If a fence is close to the gate, then the type of fastening of the gate to the fence is indicated. Often, designs include iron gates located separately from the main doors. Gates can be transparent or solid.

Sample drawing - gate sketch

Installation of support pillars

Modern wrought iron gates have significant weight, so support pillars must withstand significant weight without risk of distortion. Metal pipes can be used as supports, which are subsequently lined with brick. Installation of supports is carried out in the following order:

  • The locations of the support pillars are marked.
  • Holes are dug at least 70 cm deep (necessarily below the freezing depth).
  • At the bottom of the pits there are cushions made of crushed stone.
  • Inserted into holes metal pipes.
  • The supports are being concreted.
  • Fastenings for the valves are welded to the pipes.
  • The pipes are lined with bricks or...

Making a gate frame

Work on the manufacture of the frame must be carried out on a flat surface to avoid distortions of the finished structure.

  • Marked and cut frame elements are tacked by spot welding.
  • The frame is checked for distortion.
  • All seams are welded using a welding inverter.
  • Using a grinder, the frame is cleared of sagging.
  • If blind iron sheets are used, they are inserted inside the frame and secured with welded joints.
  • The frame of the gate is made using the same principle, if its presence is provided.

Filling the frame with forging elements

It is understood that forged gates will be filled with ready-made decorative elements. According to the diagram, all iron elements are welded on the front side of the frame. It is important to ensure symmetry of the elements on both doors. A welding inverter makes this job quick and easy. After welding all the elements, they are polished using a grinder. For this it is better to use a special grinding wheel. Places that the grinder cannot reach are sanded manually using sandpaper.

Then the hinges are welded to the sashes. They must match the hinges located on the support posts.

Installation of sashes

First, two lower hinges are welded to the ends of the valves in the same direction. The sashes are being hung. The top loop should be attached in the opposite direction, on an already hanging structure. This is done so that the doors cannot be removed by intruders. The operation of the valves is checked. If there are jams somewhere, or the doors are not at the same level, the problems are eliminated. The installation of the sashes is completed.

Painting the fence

Is very important stage in the manufacture of any metal products. Wrought iron gates will quickly lose their noble appearance if they are not painted. Thus, iron products will be protected from corrosion. However, this operation must be performed correctly:

  • The metal is cleaned with a grinding machine.
  • The product is primed. For this purpose, a special paint containing anti-corrosion additives is used.
  • The gates and gates are being painted. Only high-quality paint is used that can last for several years. The fence is usually painted the same color.
  • After the paint has dried, the structure can be used.

Tip: painting figured products should only be done with a brush or with a spray gun, since the roller is not able to reach all hard-to-reach places. You can also use cans of spray paint, which are sold in hardware stores.

At the exit you get a beautiful gate that decorates the entire site.

Locks and fittings

When the structure is painted, locking hinges or more complex elements are welded onto the gate. Locks and other fittings are installed. If automatic forged gates are manufactured, a drive is connected to them, an electrical cable is connected, and sensors are installed. The automatic gate control is located on the fence, next to the gate. If the fence is also forged, then a separate control panel is installed next to the fence.

We looked at how to make forged gates with your own hands. Stylish and beautiful designs that can be achieved using simple sets of decorative products can add color and sophistication to any area. In addition, the durability of wrought iron gates and the adjacent fence allows you to forget about the problems of fencing for many years.

Only at first glance, it seems impossible to make forged gates with your own hands. Openwork, graceful, beautiful designs are traditionally considered the embodiment of subtle, refined taste, genuine craftsmanship and considerable professional skills.

I hasten to reassure you that to make forged gates with your own hands you do not have to be a blacksmith master. It is enough to work as a designer yourself, give free rein to your imagination and sketch out a sketch of the future gate with all the forged elements: curls, leaves, spears, flowers, balls, hemispheres. All these elements are produced by stamping on an industrial scale and are available for free sale.

Looking at the sketch, you count the number necessary elements, including bars, angles and sheet metal, and hurry to base building materials to purchase them. You don’t even have to order a cargo taxi to deliver wrought iron gate elements - they will fit in the trunk of a passenger car.

There are many options for forged gates, not only in terms of ornamentation, but also in the type of materials from which they are made.

Forged gates are:

  • Metal. Completely made of rods, corners and decorative elements of various configurations. Considered the most expensive design
  • Combined. In turn, such gates are divided into wooden, polycarbonate and metal profiles, decorated with forged decor. Combination gates are distinguished by their individuality. You will spend less time and money on their production.

  1. We make a sketch and put on it all the dimensions of the future gate. In your design work, you can be guided by numerous catalogs of forged gates and wickets that are freely available on the Internet. If you are not yet a very experienced welder, we advise you to choose a simpler design project, without unnecessary curls and balls. You can try your hand at making a combined fence with forged decorative elements and different level peaks.
  2. Assembly of parts. On level ground horizontal surface We collect all the details, checking the sketch. We make sure that we get an even drawing.
  3. Welding of forged elements. The most crucial moment, which will require a lot of patience and meticulous work. The welds should be thin and barely noticeable.
  4. Seam processing. You should thoroughly clean the welding areas and remove scale. Prime the metal with a special compound, paint the gate frame with forged elements in the chosen color.
  5. Install swing gates. To do this, carefully weld the resulting openwork grille to the gate frame.

Installation of sliding gates

Increasingly, owners of private houses are resorting to installing more. Original decoration there will be forged inserts in a section made of other materials. The leaf can also be made entirely from forged parts, making sliding gates unusually light. This will allow you to use a less powerful mechanism as an electric drive, which will reduce your automation costs. It is also important that the load on the moving mechanism is reduced and its service life is increased.

You can make a sliding gate leaf from a profiled sheet and several forged decorative elements if for some reason you do not want to open the area to prying eyes. Attach the profiled sheet to the metal frame using self-tapping screws, then carefully attach the forged elements to it using welding machine with thin electrodes.

Before starting work, do simple sketch insert parts indicating exact dimensions. In this case, the gate can be made in the same style.

An equally interesting option is sliding gates made of monolithic polycarbonate with forged elements. Monolithic polycarbonate stronger than cellular - combined gates made of it and decorative forged elements will last much longer unchanged than a structure made of corrugated sheets.

It is important to take into account the nuances of fastening: the polycarbonate sheet is attached to the metal frame of the future gate from the wrong side, while the forging elements should be on the front side of the gate. A very light gate design, complemented by a gate with the same pattern, will protect your area from prying eyes and decorate it.

You just need to choose beautiful handles, curly hinges and a lock for the gate. Forged elements covered with patina and bronze handles look stylish.

Professionals advise starting welding with large parts, and only then moving on to working with small elements. This will increase your experience and self-confidence.

After you have welded the sliding gate leaf and painted it, begin to mount the finished section into the opening using welding.

Before installation begins, you should

  • Purchase all components for sliding gates, electric drive
  • Prepare a special, deep and strong foundation for the foundation.

Forged sliding gates are installed according to generally accepted standards. The installation diagram is attached to the door components. We must remember that the sliding gate section should be one and a half to two meters larger than the opening. For example, to pass a car 4 meters wide, a sliding section 6 meters wide is used.

Tips for a craftsman on making gates and wickets from forged elements

  1. When preparing a sketch, put on it the dimensions of all parts
  2. After welding, clean the seams with special care and free the metal from scale and rust. Degrease the surface, prime it with a special compound for metal. Only after proper preparation, proceed to painting the decorative parts.
  3. The design on the gate must exactly replicate the decor of the entrance gate - they must be made in the same style.

Your gate is ready. You can not only be proud of the fruits of your work, which passers-by look at, but also independently calculate the economic benefits of assembling forged gates with your own hands.

All the secrets correct installation forged gates

Of course, the forged gate is the face of the site and is stunning architectural element. But first, in order for it not to become such, it must be installed beautifully and, most importantly, correctly.

This process, at first glance, is quite complicated, but in practice it is simple and understanding it will not be difficult.

Features of installing a forged gate

Installation of a forged gate can take several different types load-bearing supports. These are the supports laid during the construction of the fence itself. They can be:

  1. brick
  2. concrete
  3. metal

Stages of installing a forged gate on a brick or concrete frame

Stage one

First of all, you should make sure that all dimensions correspond to those specified in the project. The gate leaf should be approximately 2 cm narrower than the opening, 1 cm on each side. This will ensure unhindered opening and closing of the gate without touching or rubbing against the supporting frame.

Stage two

Since a forged gate is a metal product, you will have to use a welding machine during installation. But how to weld metal gate to concrete or brick? Everything is very simple. When erecting load-bearing columns, in the place where the future gate will be installed, they must be laid reinforcing bars. If there are none at the intended fastening points, they need to be installed. Hinges will be welded to them, on which the gate will hang. To do this, you need to mark the future holes, drill them at an angle of 45 degrees or close to it and hammer a reinforcing rod into it, so that the bottom edge faces down. This angle was not chosen by chance. A forged gate has quite a lot of weight and, when opening and closing, constantly shifts its center of gravity. Therefore, if the reinforcing bars are installed horizontally, over time the weight of the gate will break the holes and the structure will warp or sag. Reinforcement driven to the depth of the hole should be cut off almost to the root. Leave only a couple of millimeters so that the metal dies can be welded.

Stage three

Using measuring tools, a level and a thread beacon, you need to install the gate in the opening and secure it there. Distance from bottom profile to sidewalk path should not be less than 5 cm. For unhindered operation of the gate, the distance on the sides between the vertical profile and the opening must be at least 1 cm. Loops are welded to a levelly installed gate and pre-installed reinforcing rods with dies using a welding machine. The seams need to be made thick and reliable, taking into account, again, the weight of the gate. If necessary, reinforcing bars need to be strengthened. After completing the welding work, the fixed gate can be released. Sometimes you can find forged gates with hinges already welded to them. In this case, a profile is welded to the rods on which they are supported.

Stage four

Now the gate is standing and even working. But the installation is not finished yet. Welding areas must be protected. To do this, use a grinder to clean the surface from scale and rust. Then prime and paint. In this case, the hinges will serve for a long time and reliably.

Installation of a forged gate on a metal frame

Stage one

To organize an opening for a forged gate, you should use materials with a margin of safety. A forged gate has a fairly good weight and, if insufficiently strong materials are used, it threatens to destroy the entire structure. For load-bearing pillars, it is better to use a profile pipe of at least 50 x 50. For it, you need to dig a 1 meter hole and fill it halfway with stones or broken brick. This is necessary to set a very precise size between the supporting pillars. After the work is completed, the pillars are concreted and stand for one to four weeks.

Stage two

After the concrete has hardened, you can begin installing the gate. The installation process is the same as for concrete and brick frames. The gate leaf is installed in the opening and, using measuring instruments is leveled and strengthened. Afterwards, the hinges are welded using a welding machine and the work can be considered completed.

Stage three

Since the structure is metal, after welding, it must be protected from corrosion. To do this, using a grinder, you should clean the welding surfaces and pillars from rust and scale and paint them, after pre-treating them with a primer.

With a significant increase in the aesthetics of the perception of the entrance area, artistic forging of the gate improves the ergonomics of operation and increases the status of the owner of the site. The openwork elements chosen as the filling material for the sashes have less windage compared to solid sheets made of corrugated sheets.

Sections of fences decorated with elements of cold and hot forging cost three times less than gates. In the first case, the manufacturer indicates the price per linear meter without taking into account the height of the structure. To buy a gate with forging elements in the photo below, you will have to operate square meters, take into account the complexity, repeatability of the pattern, ornament.

When the structure is filled to the maximum with openwork parts, the processing of the seams becomes more difficult (all elements are attached by welding); painting the product in hard to reach places much more difficult. There are several technologies self-made openwork wickets, gates:

  • cold forging with special equipment;
  • assembly on a frame welded from a profile pipe ready-made elements industrial production;
  • hot forging with a gas welding kit.

Large patterns are cheaper and easier to make yourself. A budget option for a garden gate is a frame made of a square pipe, in which the upper horizontal bar replaced by an arcuate one.

In any case, it is necessary to take into account that the abundance of small ones not only increases the artistic value of the doors, but also increases the weight of the structure. You have to either install more powerful, expensive hinges or increase their number on each side. In the case of sliding gates, a more powerful drive will be required and energy consumption will increase.

Self-assembly of gates from ready-made elements of artistic forging

The most convenient technology for manufacturing wickets and gates from ready-made elements of the following type:

  • preparation - the home handyman will need a flat concrete surface, which is usually the garage floor, utility room, parking;

  • drawing a sketch - one or both doors (if there is sufficient free space) are drawn on concrete surface real size;
  • frame assembly - pieces of profile pipe are joined by welding, the seams are cleaned with an angle grinder (“grinder”);

  • measuring the length of the blanks for each shaped element - a piece of stranded copper/aluminum wire is bent along the contour of the applied pattern, straightened, and added to it required stock(0.5 – 0.3 m);
  • production of elements - in special devices by cold and hot forging they are bent and twisted necessary details, when using ready-made ruffles, rings, ellipses, this stage is skipped;
  • filling the sash space - in accordance with the sketch, large and small elements are placed inside the welded frame, welding them to the contour profile, joining each other;

  • processing - after cleaning the seams and removing metal deposits, the structure is primed and painted in the desired color.

The hinges are installed when hanging the sashes, which makes it possible to take into account the existing landscape and compensate for possible defects in the verticality of the pillars and the horizontality of the road surface.

Gates made of corrugated sheets with forged elements are a budget option for the entrance groups of the site. After covering the frame with corrugated sheets, the structure will receive the necessary strength; the forged elements, in addition to decorating the gate, act as additional stiffening ribs. This allows you to reduce the construction budget by using rolled products of a smaller cross-section. However, in massive large-format structures, you should not use too thin a rod. This will reduce the aesthetics of the design. Experts recommend using a rod with a minimum diameter of 14 mm or a cross-section of 14 x 14 mm (circle, square, respectively).

Forged sliding gates are much more complex structurally - instead of two leaves with a rational aspect ratio, one long section is used here. Therefore, for normal operation of the structure, greater rigidity is required, and a more massive profile is used.

Gates and wickets with forged elements in the photo have restrictions on the architecture of the home and the exterior of the facades. Metal gates have 70–50% transparency, so they are more appropriate for facades lined with brick, clinker, siding, and panels. For wooden log houses, it is better to choose wattle fence, picket fence, or classic picket fence.

DIY cold forging

You can make beautiful forged gates entirely yourself or bend some of the large elements and fill the spaces between them with ready-made ruffles, half rings, arches, twisted rods. However, the home master needs to know some nuances:

  • when changing the geometry of the rod using a cold method, its strength sharply increases;
  • straightening an incorrect bend is much more difficult than making it again from another workpiece;
  • for almost any openwork detail you will need an appropriate device (“flashlight”, “snail”, “gnut” and others);
  • the manufactured devices are unlikely to be needed after installing the fence on the site, which causes additional budget costs.

The forged gates in the photo are completely assembled from parts made by the owner of the site using the cold forging method. Purchasing factory-made elements reduces time, improves quality, and minimizes waste in cutting expensive rolled metal products.

Despite these difficulties forged fences and gates assembled independently are cheaper than ready-made analogues. Decorative fittings will further enhance the aesthetics of the entrance area. Manufacturers produce hinges with forged linings, locks, latches made by hot and cold forging methods. These elements give logical completeness to the structures with a slight increase in the budget for the construction of enclosing structures.

Metal bending equipment

The industry produces manual mechanical pipe benders, budget models which cost around 1,000 rubles, allow you to bend a rod with a cross-section of 16 x 16 mm. After constructing a fence or gate, the tool will be useful on the farm many times, unlike other special devices.

If necessary, a simple pipe bender can be made independently according to the drawings below.

Complex spiral-shaped curls cannot be made using a conventional pipe bender. To do this, you will need a “snail” or removable conductors. Longitudinal twisting of the rod to obtain a spiral is carried out in “twister” or “flashlight” machines. The first costs 10 - 8 thousand rubles, the second is three times more expensive, since it allows you to weave baskets from four rods at the same time.

When purchasing machines you should remember:

  • for a single production of gate elements, it is not cost-effective either to purchase this equipment or to manufacture it yourself;
  • when designing the entire territory of the site (not only gates, but also fence spans), profitability must be calculated individually.

If, in addition to a plot of land in a holiday village, you also need to fence garden plot, a farmstead in a holiday village, the cost of one or two machines is guaranteed to pay off. Moreover, they will remain the property of the home craftsman and will be able to generate income for neighbors in the manufacture of forged elements.

Popular forged elements for fences and gates

The elegant forged gates with a wicket in the photo are assembled from parts available for free sale on the construction markets of the regions of the Russian Federation. The most popular among designers are the following:

  • plasticine - rods without edges, imitating hand modeling from soft material with a non-repeating surface topography;
  • vine is a modification of plasticine that imitates the trunk of a climbing plant of the same name;
  • vine shoot - detail complex configuration with spiral winding, interlacing rods;
  • baroque - medium-format elements of 8 - 4 curls, decorated with peaks, tassels, bells, and other hot forged elements;
  • monogram - professionals call these small-format parts “currency” for their external resemblance to the dollar symbol;

  • grapes - three-dimensional structures imitating bunches with leaves;
  • twisted tube - imitation of a braided braid;
  • a basket of decorative spiral inserts made of several twisted rods of small cross-section;
  • pillars - twisted square rod;
  • ball - unlike cast products, the surface has a deliberately uneven shape.

Forged gates and wickets photos, sketches of which are created professional designers, always outperform self-made structures. Our specialists have regular practice, specialized education, and know the dimensions of finished artistic forging elements available for retail sale.

The wrought iron gates in the picture often do not give a complete picture of the exterior of the entrance area. Therefore, designers visualize the structure in a graphic editor and place them in 3D programs on modeled reliefs to scale. The user gets the opportunity to evaluate the aesthetics of perception of the architectural ensemble in conjunction with the location of the main dwelling, outbuildings, and small architectural forms on the site. Timely changes to the appearance of the gate eliminate subsequent alterations and ensure high-quality integration into landscape design plot taking into account the development of a cottage village.

The local government may set specific requirements for the style of fencing on one street. Restrictions often relate to the height of posts, fencing sections, level of light transmission, and transparency of spans. These recommendations must be taken into account at the design stage; if the requirements are not met, the reduction appearance gates, gates in accordance with the specified standards can be specified to the owner by force.

DIY hot forging

A home craftsman will not be able to professionally create forged elements using the hot forging method due to the lack of appropriate equipment. However, every owner can adequately decorate gates, fence sections, and wickets if they have gas welding equipment.

A budget option for heating rods is a household gas burner, which is effective for rolled metal with a cross-section of up to 14 mm. From scrap materials on the site, you can make a forge with an air supply from a household vacuum cleaner. In any case, for hot forging you will need an anvil, which is usually an inverted piece of rail (the lower platform is wider, more convenient for working with a hammer).

Forged gates are made by hand from several hours to a month, depending on the complexity of the project. For example, after designing, purchasing elements manufactured industrially, welding work will take no more than two hours for each leaf. Then all that remains is to clean the seams, degrease, prime, and paint the metal in a convenient color.

If you choose to manufacture all the elements on your own for forged gates, the price will decrease, but you will have to additionally assemble several devices for cold forging, construct a forge, or rent a gas cutter for hot forging of metal. Time costs will increase many times over, but House master will be able to decorate the entire fence in the same style by installing forged parts in the spans of the fence around the entire perimeter, which is much more profitable than buying so many finished products.

Forged gates and wickets by default have a high-quality design, indicating the wealth and artistic taste of the owner.

Examples of sketches of forged gates and gates

The designer makes sketches of forged gates using several standard rules, knowledge of which will help the home craftsman:

  • rational combination of budget, original design - for forged gates and gates, photos of which are posted on this page, the price is not the same, you should not overpay for exclusivity at the expense of the practicality and ergonomics of the products;

  • structural reliability – the best option for the frame of the gate, the gate is a pipe 40 x 20 mm, the decor is made of a rod 10 x 10 mm, vertical posts are made of a pipe 15 x 15 mm;
  • installation budget - should not exceed 25% of the cost of the structure itself; for massive sashes overloaded with decorative elements, a reinforced foundation, pillars, and hinges will be required;
  • type of opening - arched, broken upper part of the gates is convenient only in swing structures; for sliding gates, a standard geometric shape (rectangle) is used;
