In the summer, to keep your summer cottage looking neat, you have to mow the grass regularly. A trimmer, a lightweight manual lawn mower in the form of a cane, helps you quickly cope with this.

To solve this problem, I trimmed the “original” plastic shield, leaving only the third part attached to the rod.

Then I made a new one from an aluminum sheet 0.2 mm thick and 250x250 mm in size, and attached it with two screws from above to the remaining part of the former shield.

Instead of aluminum, you can use a plate made of rubber or linoleum, but then the shields made of these materials will have to be secured with steel wire so that the edges do not accidentally get caught under the rotating fishing line.

Upgrading the trimmer guard

During the operation of any electric trimmer, one major drawback appears: the resulting grass juice and haylage scatter far to the sides and upwards, covering the mower from head to toe with greenery. You have to use special clothing and a mask to protect your face and eyes, but dust gets into your boots and settles on your headgear. After just an hour of work, the mower turns out to be “all covered with greenery, absolutely all”! You have to spend a lot of time on subsequent “sanitation”.

The reason is that trimmers have an excessively small guard over the rotating line. In mine, for example, the shield occupies only a sector, which on the watch dial corresponds to the numbers from 4 to 8, which is clearly not enough.

To eliminate this drawback, I cut off the plastic shield in my trimmer and left only the third (central) part attached to the rod. Then I made an enlarged shield from an aluminum sheet 0.2 mm thick and 250x250 mm in size, which I attached with two screws from above to the remaining part of the former shield (see figure).

As a result, the resulting new shield began to cover the entire semicircle of rotation of the line facing the mower, protecting him from flying greenery. The effect of this modernization was remarkable! Now even boots don’t get dirty above half the tops.

If there is no aluminum sheet, you can use a rubber or linoleum plate. To prevent the edges of such material from drooping, they will have to be reinforced on top along the perimeter with steel wire. In this case, the peripheral parts of the material must be held in a raised state by the wire. The shield material must be attached to the wire in precisely these places, inaccessible to the rotating fishing line.

    Electric motor

    The design of the lawnmower is based on a collector motor from an old Soviet-era 300-watt Buran vacuum cleaner. Its intended use had to be abandoned after, as a result of long-term use, various gaskets began to wear out and air movement was disrupted. I was tired of eliminating emerging fistulas that affected pressure and suction, so I bought a replacement.

    Appearance The assembled engine side trimmer is shown in the photograph. Since it is no longer in use, it is covered with rust, and the remains of the mown grass have long since dried out and remained stuck to all the parts. I find it much more convenient to work with a factory design.

    The engine didn't have to be rebuilt at all. I simply made several fasteners and protective covers using a vice and a hacksaw for metal. In the next photo, a cap cut from a plastic bottle is raised, covering the brush assembly.

    I draw your attention to the self-return function. I do not recommend using a regular switch. If while working you accidentally fall, lose your balance, or something unexpected happens, and the running trimmer slips out of your hands, you will not be able to stop it instantly. Sharp knife will cut everything that gets in his way.

    To prevent accidents in such situations, I even use a factory trimmer. I believe that safety and health are more valuable than such amenities with risks.

    Installation method

    Random access to electrical contacts wires are limited by the insulation of a special insulating tape.

    The wires to the button of a homemade lawn mower are simply wrapped around the rod, and with reverse side twisted and soldered into the gap of one power cable core. The connections are insulated with electrical tape and covered with protective cambrics.

    For a drill, you can screw two nuts onto a regular stud, tightening them with keys, and use the plane of the created stop to install the knife.

    A mounting nut will complete this design. If you use wide washers, the fixation will be stronger. The lock nuts can be replaced with one, but it will need to be welded. The back end of the pin is inserted into the drill chuck and clamped like a drill.

    The knife hole must be drilled in the center, and the assembled attachment must be well balanced. Otherwise, lateral runout will occur, for which the drill bearings are not designed.

    Set the correct direction of rotor rotation with the drill switch. When you turn on the trimmer, the nut should work to clamp the knife, and not unscrew. Otherwise, the knife with sharp edges may fly out of the holder.

    Trimmer line attachment

    You can make a reel for attaching fishing line with your own hands, but I don’t see much point in this matter. It’s easier to buy it in a store or use it from a broken trimmer.

    Holes are drilled in the corners for mounting the engine. If the holes are made in the form of grooves, this will allow the engine to be shifted relative to the frame when mounting, thus changing the distance from the knives to the ground.     The central part of the lawn mower is the cutting unit, which consists of a mandrel with two short (or one long) knives attached to it.

    Engine

    A good option is asynchronous electric motor power 500-600 W and above, with a speed of about 3000 rpm. The big advantage of an asynchronous motor is its low noise level. The higher the engine speed, the better and smoother the haircut. In fact, the quality of mowing is determined not by the speed of rotation of the blades, but by the linear speed of movement of the cutting edge relative to the grass. It is not difficult to find formulas for calculating the required capacitance of capacitors. In practice, they take approximately 200 uF for a motor with a power of about 2 kW. However, you need to understand that in terms of reliability and duration of continuous operation, the drill cannot be compared with an asynchronous motor, so if you have to mow a relatively large area, preference should be given to the latter.

    In the case of a drill, it is very simple to mount the knife. The knife with the hole in the center is clamped with a nut on the bolt, and the bolt is clamped in the drill chuck.

    Mandrel

    The simplest mandrel design is a disk or strip with a flange in which there is a hole equal to the diameter of the motor shaft. The flange is put on the shaft and locked on it, knives are attached to the disk or strip. The diameter of the disk or the length of the strip depends on the planned working width and the length of the knives. As a finished mandrel, you can use a pulley with a landing diameter suitable for the shaft of the existing engine. This will solve two problems at once - centering the mandrel and its fastening. But the pulley must be reliable enough.

    The mandrel must be securely fastened to the motor shaft. This is usually done using bolts screwed into the flange perpendicular to the shaft axis.

    To prevent grass from wrapping around the shaft, it can be covered with a tin can.

    If a suitable pulley or other suitable parts are not found, you will have to order the manufacture of a mandrel from a turner or make it yourself from a pipe of a suitable diameter and a strip or circle welded to it. There are three problems here: finding a pipe of suitable diameter, ensuring the perpendicularity of the welded strip or circle with respect to the pipe, and centering the mandrel after its manufacture. With some effort, all these problems can be solved.

    Knives

    Flat tool steel with a thickness of 2-3 mm and a width of 20 to 50 mm is used as knives. The thinner the knife, the better it cuts. However, a thick knife is stronger, which, given the obstacles encountered in its path in the form of bumps, various foreign objects and even stones, is very important.

    The design of knives has two main options. The first is a knife in the form of a long strip, which is attached to the mandrel symmetrically relative to its axis. The length of the knife in this case is equal to the width of the grip - usually 30-50 cm. The sharpened ends of the strip act as cutters. In this case, the knife and the mandrel can be one integral part in the form of a plate, to which a flange with a mounting hole is welded or riveted.

    The second option is two short knives 50-80 mm long, which are attached to the edges of the mandrel at an angle of 180° to each other. They can be positioned straight or with a slight slope. The knives can be secured with two or one bolt. The first method is more reliable, however, fastening with one bolt allows the knife to fold (without breaking or deforming) when it hits an obstacle - a stone or a bump. The fastening of folding knives must be inspected regularly, because... Over time, the screws may wear out.

    The steel for knives must be sufficiently hard, but not brittle, otherwise the knives may break, which will not only require their replacement, but also create the risk of injury from a flying piece. The experience of amateur craftsmen shows that wood hacksaw blades 2 mm thick are very suitable as a material for lawn mower blades. The technology for making a knife from them is simple. Two strip-shaped blanks are marked on the canvas (or one long knife is made from the canvas with sharpening at the ends and holes for fastening in the middle), which are then cut out with a grinder. Holes for fastening are drilled in the workpieces. After this, all that remains is to sharpen the knives, attach them to the frame and center them.

    If drilling holes is problematic, then you can place the blade on a metal surface with a hole slightly larger in diameter than the hole in the blade should be and hit it with a punch. The protrusion formed after the impact is removed with a file (if the metal is soft enough) or with a sharpener. If the hole doesn't respond required diameter, the process is repeated.

    In essence, there are many options for making functional knives, as well as materials for making them. The main thing is to sharpen them well, center them (so that there is no vibration) and securely fasten them. When attaching knives to the mandrel, you need to use lock washers and locknuts. Without this, the mounting bolts will unscrew due to vibration.

    If possible, it is better to make the cutting edges slightly curved down, like on branded lawn mowers. This will reduce the grass from wrapping around the motor shaft. Or you can make a disk that covers the shaft. Also, if the engine power is close to the power of branded lawn mowers, you can buy a branded lawn mower blade ().

    Wheels

    The diameter and position of the wheels must be selected so that the knives are located at a distance of 5-6 cm from the ground. This mowing height is considered optimal - both from the point of view of the aesthetics of the lawn and the quality of the haircut. If the grass is cut at too high a height, it will bend, allowing the blades to pass above it and remain uncut. Cutting lower is difficult due to the unevenness of the ground.

    There is no clear opinion about what number of wheels is optimal - 2, 3 or 4, among craftsmen operating homemade lawn mowers. 3 or 4 wheels are good because they set the exact distance from the knives to the ground. Two wheels make the lawn mower more maneuverable and allow you to cut grass in any hidden places. In addition, it is easier to find two identical wheels than three or four. However, you can make the wheels yourself, for example from plywood and bearings, so the last argument is not so convincing. Ultimately, the choice remains with the master himself.

    If you choose a three-wheeled lawn mower, then two wheels should be on the handle side so that you can lift the front of the mower for a turn by pressing on the handle.

    The larger the wheel diameter, the better. A lawn mower with small wheels is more difficult to push through grass.

    If the edge of the knives is bent, the opposite cutting edge, up (or rivet blades to them), they will work like a fan, lifting and rotating the cut grass with a flow of air. At the same time, if you make a cut in the casing (in the quadrant where the knives run) and pull a mesh bag or box over it, then the cut grass will be collected in it.

    I immediately thought that it wouldn’t hurt to buy a simple lawn mower, which was not easy to buy at that time. Therefore, I decided to experiment with a homemade design.

    As a result, I gained practical experience in mowing grass, thanks to which I was able to buy a trimmer that is well suited for my purposes.

    Based on the knowledge gained, I give advice to the home craftsman on how to make an electric trimmer with his own hands from used equipment based on an electric motor from a vacuum cleaner, drill or grinder with pictures, diagrams and photographs that allow him to repeat a similar design.

    Please note that my lawn mower was assembled in haste using the most readily available materials. Its fastening was made for reliable operation without complying with any design conditions, but ensuring basic safety requirements. So do not judge strictly for the unpresentable appearance of the structure.

    Safety regulations

    I’ll start with this section to remind you: any homemade lawn mower design can cause harm to health. This requirement is especially relevant for:

    1. electrical equipment;
    2. parts of mechanisms rotating at high speed.

    Let's look briefly at these two factors.

    Electrical hazard of trimmer

    Electricity doesn't care about your health. It creates a current path where the best conditions and lower electrical resistance are provided for it. You can get an electric shock even from random things: clothing, surrounding objects, a stationary car. There is nothing strange about this. You need to take care of yourself and use protective equipment.

    When creating an electric trimmer with your own hands, immediately pay attention to the strength and quality of the insulation of all current-carrying parts, both inside the engine and on the external circuit. Its installation must be carried out by a qualified worker.

    When working with a homemade trimmer you need to:

    All three devices listed should be checked. They must meet safety requirements for technical characteristics, settings, and be properly adjusted.

    Mechanical circuit hazards

    Commutator motors develop very high rotation speeds. For vacuum cleaners they can range from 11,000 to 30,000 rpm. This is quite enough for a small pebble, piece of wire or wood chips to fly out from under the cutting head, like a bullet from a rifle.

    The difference will be that the direction of the bullet is chosen by the sniper, and the pebble from the lawnmower is chosen by chance. It is impossible to predict where he will fly. Therefore, when working it is necessary:

    • ensure a stable body position, which is a general safety requirement when working with all tools;
    • protect yourself with thick clothing made from natural cotton fabrics or denim;
    • wear sturdy shoes rather than open sandals;
    • use goggles or a protective mask.

    Lawn mower made from an electric motor from a vacuum cleaner

    My design consists of:

    • commutator motor;
    • its attachment point on a wooden rod;
    • homemade cutting knife;
    • support wheel;
    • switch buttons;
    • protective covers.

    Electric motor

    The design of the lawnmower is based on a collector motor from an old Soviet-era 300-watt Buran vacuum cleaner. Its intended use had to be abandoned after, as a result of long-term use, various gaskets began to wear out and air movement was disrupted. I was tired of eliminating emerging fistulas that affected pressure and suction, so I bought a replacement.

    The appearance of the assembled trimmer from the engine side is shown in the photograph. Since it is no longer in use, it is covered with rust, and the remains of the mown grass have long since dried out and remained stuck to all the parts. I find it much more convenient to work with a factory design.

    The engine didn't have to be rebuilt at all. Just with help electric drill, a vice and a hacksaw for metal, I made several fasteners and protective covers. In the next photo, a cap cut from a plastic bottle is raised, covering the brush assembly.

    For greater clarity, I lifted the protective cover with my finger and showed a close-up of the engine from the brush side. Here, all factory parts remain in working order.

    Barbell

    All parts of the homemade trimmer are attached to a dried wooden stick without any processing. I drilled mounting holes in it, and screwed some parts, for example, the handle bracket, with a piece of wire.

    Homemade grass knife

    It is noteworthy that when I removed the fan impeller, I saw that the free space on the rotor shaft was ideal for attaching a homemade knife. I didn't even have to select the nut and gaskets.

    Bad experience

    At first I tried attaching wires of different diameters to the shaft. She started to mow the grass normally, but stopped very quickly. Its structure cannot withstand the mechanical tensile and bending loads developed by high engine speeds and oncoming grass. Therefore, trimmer manufacturers produce different types of fishing line.

    Method of making a lawn mower

    I made a knife for a homemade trimmer using the following technology:

    • took a metal plate made of mild steel;
    • cut it into a rectangular shape;
    • drilled a hole in the center along the diameter of the shaft;
    • sharpened the edges to reduce the stress when mowing.

    To show how to attach it through the factory bushing, I unscrewed the nut a little and simply bent the knife itself by hand.

    Support wheel

    The main disadvantage of this lawn mower design, like all trimmers with a bottom-mounted electric motor, is the need to exert great physical effort to keep the blade in the desired plane when mowing. At the same time, the worker’s muscles tense, and he himself quickly gets tired. Need emphasis on the ground.

    Therefore, I attached small wheels from an old children's cart to the motor housing and rod using adapters. They are lightweight, but make the job much easier.

    Switch button

    It must be placed on the handle directly under the palm.

    This way you can quickly turn off the trimmer.

    Design selection

    I used a special fastening of a button with self-return from one of the used measuring electrical devices. It is simply screwed to a wooden rod with soft copper wire insulation and for better clarity, the photo is shifted from its axis to one side.

    The switching capacity of the contacts can withstand the power developed by a 300-watt motor with a reserve.

    I draw your attention to the self-return function. I do not recommend using a regular switch. If while working you accidentally fall, lose your balance, or something unexpected happens, and the running trimmer slips out of your hands, you will not be able to stop it instantly. A sharp knife will cut anything that gets in its way.

    To prevent accidents in such situations, I even excluded the function on the factory trimmer permanent job by removing the corresponding switch. I believe that safety and health are more valuable than such amenities with risks.

    Installation method

    Accidental access to the electrical contacts of the wires is limited by the insulation of a special insulating tape.

    In the next photo I deliberately exposed them. This will give you a better view of the fastening and connection.

    The wires to the button of a homemade lawn mower are simply wrapped around the rod, and on the reverse side they are twisted and soldered into the gap of one supply wire of the cable. The connections are insulated with electrical tape and covered with protective cambrics.

    According to safety rules, any switch or control button must switch phase, not zero. But in the design under consideration, determining its position each time does not make much sense, and the homemade trimmer was created for the sake of experimentation, and not long-term work. It has proven itself quite satisfactorily when mowing the lawn.

    Protective covers

    You have already seen their image in all the above photographs. On top of the engine, to protect the collector assembly during operation, I simply inserted a cut neck from a plastic bottle.

    We managed to make the lower cover from the body of the same vacuum cleaner, cutting out part of the sector from it. I attached it with screws and nuts.

    Trimmer from a drill or grinder

    The principle of creating a homemade design based on this tool is exactly the same as in my case.

    The engine is mounted on the lower end of the rod, and the working knife is made in the form of an attachment.

    Knife attachment principle

    For a drill, you can screw two nuts onto a regular stud, tightening them with keys, and use the plane of the created stop to install the knife.

    A mounting nut will complete this design. If you use wide washers, the fixation will be stronger. The lock nuts can be replaced with one, but it will need to be welded. The back end of the pin is inserted into the drill chuck and clamped like a drill.

    The knife hole must be drilled in the center, and the assembled attachment must be well balanced. Otherwise, lateral runout will occur, for which the drill bearings are not designed.

    Set the correct direction of rotor rotation with the drill switch. When you turn on the trimmer, the nut should work to clamp the knife, and not unscrew. Otherwise, the knife with sharp edges may fly out of the holder.

    Trimmer line attachment

    You can make a reel for attaching fishing line with your own hands, but I don’t see much point in this matter. It’s easier to buy it in a store or use it from a broken trimmer.

    The fact is that during operation, when the fishing line is shortened, its cutting length can be restored by simply hitting the rotating head on the ground. This function works by maintaining the exact dimensions of the nozzle after complex mechanical adjustments. And disposable fastening of the fishing line requires frequent switching off of the trimmer to replace it.

    Take care of your safety first. For this:

    • remember once again the rules for handling electricity;
    • do not work without protective covers with open rotating knives;
    • do not trust strangers without proper training with your dangerous homemade products;
    • When mowing, do not be distracted, but control the work area. Do not allow children, animals, or random visitors onto it.

    A homemade lawn mower helps you experience all the advantages and disadvantages of electric grass mowing, the operating features of such devices, and the need to balance the center of mass.     How to make a trimmer with your own hands from a grinder, vacuum cleaner, drill, chainsaw

    All owners of personal plots are faced with the problem of mowing grass, which grows literally before our eyes, and during the season it is necessary to improve their plot several times. To replace the usual hand braid petrol trimmers and electric trimmers have arrived a long time ago. But the price for them does not decrease and is quite significant for many owners of dachas and private houses. Craftsmen nevertheless found a way out of this situation and learned to make trimmers with their own hands literally from improvised means, using gas and electric tools not intended for these purposes.

    Most often, a homemade electric trimmer is made on the basis of an ordinary grinder, which is available to every home craftsman. This tool almost ideal for converting into a trimmer. It has more power than store-bought machines and larger number revolutions per minute. In addition, the standard nut used in the grinder to secure the discs already has holes through which it is easy to insert a fishing line (cord).

    So, there are many options for what to make a barbell (holder) from. The simplest one is a wooden holder that is longer than for a shovel. An angle grinder is attached to the end of it at the desired angle using regular tape. The fishing line is inserted into the 2 holes of the nut, after which it is tightened. Thus, in a few minutes you get a trimmer with which you can mow the grass without any problems.

    To make it more convenient to hold the trimmer in your hands while working, and it does not rotate around the axis of the rod, you can attach a side handle made of bent pipe.

    From a vacuum cleaner

    A trimmer from a vacuum cleaner engine is made according to the same principle as from an angle grinder. The motor must be mounted on a rod, and either knives, plastic or metal disk, into which to insert the fishing line. The top of the cutting tool is covered with a protective casing.

    To dust and fine particles cut grass does not fall into the motor removed from the vacuum cleaner, it can also be hidden in a plastic casing made of sewer pipe as shown in the following photo.

    Since the motor in the vacuum cleaner is high-speed, it needs to be cooled. Therefore, under the washer into which the fishing line is inserted, it is recommended to insert homemade disk with slotted and curved blades so that it acts as a fan that creates a vacuum. It is required so that air is sucked through the hose from above and cools the engine.

    In order to ease the load on the hands of the mower operator, the unit can be installed on a platform with wheels. In this case, you will get something similar to a lawn mower.

    To secure the fishing line, you can also use either a pulley with a suitable mounting hole or a plastic wheel from a cart.

    From a drill

    The simplest mower is made in a matter of minutes from a drill or screwdriver. But first you must make a knife from a sharpened metal plate with a hole drilled in the center. A bolt is inserted into this hole and tightened with a nut.

    Since a drill with this attachment does not have a protective casing, such a tool is quite dangerous for the user. To protect yourself, you can place the drill, like a grinder (discussed above), on the handle of a shovel or on aluminum pipe.

    Also, to protect the user of the mower from knives, a casing can be attached to the drill (attached to a plastic pipe and placed on the body of the device).

    The drill is attached to the rod using clamps.

    From a chainsaw

    Many different attachments have already been invented for chainsaws that expand the capabilities of this unit, for example, a cultivator, a drill, a boat motor, and also a scythe attachment. You can see what it looks like in this video. If you want to make a trimmer out of a chainsaw, the most you can make is a lawn mower on wheels, since the engine of the unit is quite heavy, and it will not be possible to apply the above-described options for making trimmers (with a bottom drive) to it.

    Therefore, the trolley is made first. It can be welded from a 25x25 mm corner. The frame dimensions should be 500x600 mm. The wheels are attached to the corners of the frame.

    When installing the trolley handle, make sure that it does not block the winder (starter).

    The gasoline engine is installed (screwed through the holes to secure the tire) onto the frame so that the gearbox is rotated 90 degrees and the shaft is at the bottom.

    Now all that remains is to attach the cutting tool to the shaft of the unit. This is done as follows.

    1. It is necessary to weld a small piece of pipe, 80 mm long and 50 mm in diameter, to the “star” of the device. It is better to cut the pipe on a lathe so that the ends are perfectly straight.
    2. Next, find a pipe with a slightly larger diameter - equal to 58 mm. It also needs to be cut to a length of 80 mm. Thus, you will receive a telescopic shaft, which is connected using 2 bolts (m6) located opposite each other. The bolts must have locknuts. Below is a diagram of how the trimmer head is made, which is used to secure the cutting tool.

    Several holes need to be made in the telescopic pipes so that the height of the knives above the ground can be adjusted.

    It is better to make a knife of such a design as in the following figure.

    Due to the fact that movable knives are attached to the disk with rivets, they will simply bounce off when they encounter a stone or a dry branch. This will protect the shaft and gearbox from damage that may occur when the tool jams.

    Homemade protective casing

    If you are making a homemade mower, then you will definitely need a protective cover. It will protect your eyes, body and legs from injury from small pebbles and knife fragments if they break.

    The trimmer housing can be made from a sheet of aluminum or thin sheet metal.

    • pipe plug;
    • 12 V motor from an electric screwdriver and a battery from it;

    • adapter from 40 to 50 mm for plastic pipes;

    • plastic bucket;

    • blades from stationery knives.

    The work uses a pipe and an angle to it with a diameter of 40 mm.

    The conversion process is carried out as follows:

    • Having disassembled the electric screwdriver, take out the motor;
    • attach it to the plug, having previously marked and drilled mounting holes in it;

    • attach the electric motor with 2 screws;

    • solder the output to the motor;

    • install the electric motor by inserting its wiring into the pipe;

    • mark the location of the future switch with a marker on the tube;

    • connect to the wiring switch, mount it;

    • contact clamps are attached to the ends of the outgoing wires to allow quick connection to the battery;

    • a battery holder is made from the adapter;

    • connect the drive, connect the adapter to the tube;
