Paint for ceramic tiles. Types, characteristics, manufacturers. Paint for ceramic tiles: alkyd, polyurethane, epoxy, latex and special coatings, technology Paint for marking faience without firing

If the old cladding has become ugly, and you can’t just wash it off, paint for ceramic tiles can help update the coating without completely replacing it. In addition, such methods are sometimes used by designers to paint and create a unique pattern on tiles.

There are several ways to paint tiles:

  • Paint for tiles and glass (stained glass). It can be applied directly to smooth surface without preparation. Typically the outline is applied first, followed by the acrylic background paint. Due to the high price, it makes sense to use it only as a decorative effect. As alternative option You can use vinyl stickers.
  • Epoxy paint. It is harder to find on sale and is more expensive.
  • Latex or oil paint. It is necessary to first apply a special primer, for example, Tikkurila Otex.

Preparatory work

Before painting the cladding, you need to remove the remaining cement adhesive and excess grout from the surface with abrasive materials. The fallen tiles are glued with cement glue or liquid nails and left to dry completely. If they are lost, you can replace them with tiles of a different color. Chip tiles also need to be replaced.

Glue the old tiles in place and grout the seams

The surface is degreased using acetone, alcohol or solvent.

Apply Tikkurila Otex primer with a short-nap roller and leave it to dry for 12 hours. She has White color, therefore, it will partially help hide the old color of the texture.

Tikkurila Otex primer

Painting

Tile paint is applied in several layers to completely hide the old pattern and achieve a uniform color. A new layer should be applied only after the old one has completely dried.

Apply the first coat of white primer

If you do not want to get a monochromatic surface, but divide it into several parts or diversify it with ornaments, use masking tape to get straight lines of the intended design.

Painting tape to create an ornament is glued only after applying the base coat of paint. The easiest way is to make a geometric pattern out of it.

After the paint has dried, the masking tape can be removed.

The video shows the result of painting an apron in a kitchen with a white and red pattern with oil enamel:

The joints can be additionally painted using a special tile marker (Edding 8200, PUFAS FRISCHE FUGE paint).

Using stencils

A stunning effect can be achieved if you use ready-made stencils. The photo below shows an example of decorating a backsplash made of white tiles with paint.

Conclusion

You shouldn’t expect to get a great result for a long time after painting, because along with a layer of paint, the tile will lose a lot of its important properties. The decorative layer will no longer be protected by the glaze. It will be more difficult to wash, fungus and mold can form on it, the seams will have the same color, and over time the paint will begin to peel off. I would not recommend that you do such repairs to the tiles in the bathroom unless absolutely necessary; it would be safer to replace the tiles.

Lefranc&Bourgeois “Vitrail” series

Using these paints you can imitate all the beauty of real stained glass. The special formula allows you to achieve incomparable color, transparency, as well as an impression of shine and resistance to clouding. The paints are ideal for decorating glass, plastic, acetate and decorative ceramics.

L&B's Vitrail Colors line of glass paints is based on a completely new formula, offering you the best of professional grade glass paints.

The solvent base of this product guarantees a “glass-smooth” end result. Water-based products do not adhere to the surface as smoothly as solvent-based paints and therefore cannot offer the final smoothness and gloss that can be achieved with Lefranc&Bourgeois

The new formula provides an increased level of clarity for maximum shine on glass.

Particular attention is paid to the saturation and richness of color, recreating the effect of genuine colored glass.

Vitrail adheres well to non-porous surfaces such as glass, tiles and metal. However, paints are not resistant to strong cleaning agents (for dishes or plumbing).

Light fastness (resistance to fading) is enhanced throughout the product line. For maximum light fastness, exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided.

For decorative purposes only! (avoid contact with food and exposure to high temperatures).

INSTRUCTIONS : glass painting with Vitrail paints

STEP 1: SURFACE PREPARATION

1. Clean the surface with methyl alcohol to remove dirt and allow to dry.

2. On porous surfaces (wood, plaster) you should first apply a universal primer

STEP 2: OUTLINE

(optional, to achieve the effect of colored glass)

NOTE: Contour paints are water based.

  1. For best results, use a template. You can apply the pattern to the surface using water-based markers. Use a yellow Gold Cern marker or a Silver, Gray or Black Cern marker. Another way: when working on glass, place the template under the material.
  2. Hold the tube like a pen, gently touching the tip to the surface. Apply contour using even pressure on the tube. Dry for 1 hour. If necessary, erase the marker.

STEP 3: APPLY VITRAIL

  1. If the image is Cern, use a synthetic brush such as L&B Multi-Craft Round #4. Take a small drop of paint onto your brush and apply it to the surface, staying within the outline. Too thin, like too thick layer It is not recommended to apply it, since in the first case the paint does not adhere well, and in the second case the paint may get onto neighboring areas.
  2. When Vitrail is applied to simple surface, without outline, there are many overlay techniques. Try applying the paint in even strokes using flat or round brushes.
  3. DRYING: 12 hours after each coat, 3 days before using or washing the object. Air dry in a clean and dry area.

MIXING Vitrail: All Vitrail Colors can be mixed together. For lighter, more translucent colors, mix the paint with Colourless Vitrail to dilute the pigment (eg red + clear = pink). For duller colors, add a little gray paint. To achieve a marbling effect, move the paint around.

CLEANING/MAINTENANCE: Inaccuracies and errors can be corrected immediately with white spirit. Wash brushes and other materials also with white spirit. Painted objects should be washed carefully with warm water and a sponge. Dry immediately.

Do not immerse painted objects in water.

Abrasion and weather resistant, but not dishwasher safe. The colors are mixable, have good light fastness and can be diluted with water.

Until the paints are dry, they are opaque. Transparency increases as it dries. This is not always convenient. After drying, the paints sometimes move away from the outline, leaving gaps. So then you have to go through all these spaces again, which is not very convenient if the paints were mixed - it is quite difficult to catch the same color.

What paint should I use to paint ceramic tiles?

Over time, the tiles fade and lose their former beauty. Since it is not always possible to make repairs, tile paint will help to renew the coating. You can transform any type of tile, but it is important to remember that the paint for bathroom tiles must be durable and moisture resistant.

The choice of paint for tiles must be approached with the utmost seriousness, since the quality and beauty of the new design will depend on this. Therefore, before purchasing, it is recommended to consult with a specialist who will tell you which coating will be optimal for a particular room.

The choice of coating largely depends on the reason why the owner wants to change the design. Goals can be of the following nature:

  • Aesthetic considerationsold tile, laid in the kitchen or bathroom, looks unpresentable or faded. If you don’t have money for new tiles, ceramic tile paint comes to the rescue.
  • For waterproofing purposes– the paint will reliably protect the floor or wall covering from moisture and ensure complete sealing of the seams.
  • Change of style - painting floor or wall tiles will help you radically change the interior, while emphasizing the overall palette of existing shades, and you can also add new elements.
  • Decoration - the ability to create various images, unobtrusive patterns and ornaments.
  • Repair - if the furniture and interior items are updated, it is not at all necessary to change the tiles. The coating can simply be painted.

If the tiles have a beautiful appearance, it makes sense to use sealed grout for the joints, after removing the old one. It is also worth remembering that even the most durable coatings will still peel off over time when exposed to temperature changes and high humidity.

Suitable paint types

When applied regular paint After some time, the coating will begin to peel and flake off. There are several types of tile paint that are mainly used to update old coatings:

  • Latex - has excellent adhesive properties. For dry rooms, you should choose acrylic-latex compounds; for waterproofing purposes, rubber paints are suitable. The coating has a high level of wear resistance and waterproofing, is odorless and absolutely harmless to health.

  • Epoxy is a more expensive option. Good adhesion, waterproof. The paint is firmly bonded to the coating and does not peel off over time.

  • Oil-based is also suitable, but requires the application of a primer.

  • Alkyd enamels have good adhesion and are used only in dry rooms.

  • Stained glass for glass and tiles– applied to a smooth, cleaned surface, without preliminary preparation. Having a high cost, it is used mainly for decorative purposes to create a beautiful design.

  • Polyurethane – resistant to temperature changes and humidity, does not peel off and is wear-resistant.

The primer for applying epoxy and polyurethane enamels must be based on organic solvents. Water-based primer is not suitable in this case.

Varnish for ceramic tiles can give a second life to old wall tiles or dull, shabby floor covering. Not many people know that building ceramics can be painted, artistically decorated and varnished, but this is also great way Protect the surface from household dirt, scratches and moisture penetration. Let's try to figure out whether all paints and varnishes are suitable for these purposes.

It is clear that the first jar you come across with a solution of natural or synthetic resins is not suitable for applying to ceramics. For this purpose, the construction industry has prepared products with a special composition.

Construction varnishes are solutions of synthetic and natural resins that are prone to film formation in water or organic compounds. To cover ceramic surfaces use:

  • polyurethane varnishes (solutions of urethane polymers in aliphatic solvents);
  • acrylic varnishes (acrylic dispersion dissolved in water).

These are flowing colorless liquids with a small content of solids that protect ceramics and tile joints from dirt, moisture stains, dust, mechanical and chemical damage.

Varnish coating:

  1. makes it easier to care for tiles;
  2. prevents fading;
  3. enhances the shine and contrast of the pattern.

The scope of use of these coatings is not limited to ceramics alone. Properties of acrylic and polyurethane varnishes allow them to be applied to brick, plaster, a natural stone, paving slabs.

  • acrylic paints;

  • alkyd enamels;
  • polyurethane (latex) paints;

  • oil and epoxy based paints.

Varnish will allow a dull, textured, matte, unglazed finish to become glossy and shiny, and paint will repair glazed ceramic tile cladding.

How to choose?

Oil-based, latex and epoxy paints are suitable for all-over painting of ceramic tiles. In this case, a layer of special primer is first applied to the surface. It is better to apply a fantasy pattern with special stained glass paints on acrylic base, intended directly for glass and ceramics.

When choosing a protective varnish, you should pay attention to the following indicators:

  1. waterproof;
  2. degree of gloss (can be matte, semi-matte, semi-gloss, glossy and high-gloss);
  3. solids content by volume;
  4. class of hazard to human health and environment;
  5. organic content volatile substances;
  6. material consumption for processing 1 m² of surface (the lower the consumption, the more expensive the tile varnish);
  7. drying time (readiness for operational loads).

Instructions for applying to ceramic tiles

Before painting, wash ceramic tiles using a stiff brush and cleaning agent. Particular attention is paid to the seams. If the surface condition is poor, the tiles can be sanded with fine-grain sandpaper.

Required condition successful restoration work - each stage of decorating tiles should be completed by thoroughly drying the applied layer.

After removing dirt and dust, you can begin restoration work:

  • Using a lint-free cloth and a special solvent, degrease the tile surface;
  • apply primer;
  • using a roller with a foam surface, paint the tiles (corners and hard to reach places handle paint brush);
  • Apply a thin, even layer of protective varnish (when working on the floor, the composition can be applied with a soft cloth).

Ceramic tiles can be painted manually or using a ready-made stencil. Beautiful, highly detailed designs are obtained using reusable stencils industrial production. Such forms have an adhesive base, which prevents paint from spreading and accidental shifting of the stencil.

Many people are interested in whether it is possible to paint ceramic tiles in the kitchen, where the likelihood of contamination with grease, soot and food debris is especially high, and the tiled apron is often exposed to hot steam. Experts say that this is permissible, because the film protective varnish for ceramics, resistant to detergents and cleaning agents.

Safety precautions

Before painting and varnishing the tiles, you should study the safety precautions for performing this type of work. To avoid dust getting into the respiratory tract and eyes, you should work in a respirator and goggles during the preparatory grinding stage.

Even when using water-based paints and varnishes, it is recommended to carry out painting and varnishing:

  1. in ventilated areas;
  2. wearing rubber gloves;
  3. away from heat sources and open flames.

  3. primers;
  4. sanding mesh, fine-grained sandpaper;
  5. rubber gloves;
  6. respirator;
  7. brushes, rollers;
  8. special tray for paint and varnish;
