Conductors for drilling holes for dowels and confirmat. Jig for drilling holes: how to use and how to make it yourself? Vertical drilling template

In the process of assembling or repairing furniture, it is often necessary to carry out work on precision drilling holes for confirmation, for dowels, dowels and other furniture fasteners. In the case of wood and chipboard, it is difficult to make such holes using an electric drill alone: the entrance part of the hole is broken, and the hole itself may not be at a right angle to the mating surfaces. Thus, you will need a jig to drill the holes.

Purpose and classification of furniture conductors

The purpose of the jig for drilling holes is to accurately guide the drill to the required point and ensure the straightness of the tool throughout the entire depth of the resulting hole. In metalworking, such devices have been known for a long time, and are often supplied with the machine. Due to the increased number of closed joints in modern furniture products, the need for such conductors for woodworking specialists is very relevant.

The following varieties are distinguished furniture conductors:

  1. Overheads that do not require fixation before use. They are simple, mobile, but force you to use only one hand when drilling (if the drill or grinder is not installed in a special frame). Making such a conductor with your own hands is easy and simple. They are used mainly when making holes in MDF or chipboards.
  2. Rotary, which are equipped with folding brackets, and allow you to drill on two adjacent planes in one go.
  3. Jigs for drilling holes at an angle. A highly specialized version of the jig, which is designed to make holes at different angles. Often combined with the overhead version of the equipment in question.
  4. Sliding ones, with the help of which you can make several holes (including in several rows) without changing settings. More necessary for professionals who often have to perform such work. Requires skills for proper use.

If the jig is sufficiently rigid, it can also be used for drilling holes in products that do not have a flat plane, for example, in pipes. Then the conductor is secured using a clamp (this option is not suitable for furniture, due to the risk of surface deformation).

DIY jig for drilling holes

Fundamentally, such equipment consists of the following parts:

  1. An angular body element applied to the surfaces of products, which will subsequently be connected to each other with dowels, dowels or confirmations.
  2. Guide bushings where the drill fits.
  3. Clamping/fixing devices that are located at the end parts of the conductor.

For a conductor that is supposed to be made by hand, it is important to design a device for the most common requirements. home handyman mounting options. If required universal conductor(for furniture makers), it’s better to splurge on industrial version equipment, which is characterized by increased accuracy of fixation of parts, and has a higher quality performance. Moreover, manufacturers often offer templates, stops, and other kits for the jig. useful little things. Furniture conductor price industrial production ranges from 500 to 1200 rubles, which is determined by its functionality– length and number of guide holes.

Let's start designing a furniture jig for drilling holes by choosing a corner. There are more possibilities for a product where the corner will be unequal, and with the maximum possible thickness of the shelf. According to the assortment GOST 8510 “Unequal-flanged steel angles,” the minimum permissible dimensions of an angle L63 × 40 × 8: with a shelf thickness of 8 mm, a guide bushing with an outer diameter of up to 6 mm can be placed there. The internal hole for the drill, therefore, can be no more than 3.5...4 mm, but this is quite enough for most options for the resulting holes. As a last resort, they can be drilled out without using the device, especially if the hole is deep enough.

The next stage is the design of the guide bushing. It can be selected from any stainless pipe GOST 9941 (seamless) or GOST 9940 (all-welded). It is recommended to first select the pipe according to the diameter of the internal hole. A 6×1 pipe will allow you to get internal hole for a drill with a diameter of up to 3.6...3.7 mm, and a 6×1.5 pipe - for a drill up to 2.7 mm (a two-sided gap is taken taking into account the thermal expansion of the material). The length of the sleeve must be no less than twice the height of the hole made in the corner. Each bushing must fit into the hole with an interference fit or transitional fit. The most appropriate is landing using the shaft system, when the already known O.D. bushings, and a hole is drilled for it in the corner. It is better to use a slight interference fit, for example h9/P10.

It happens that the jig needs to be designed for drilling a deep hole. In such cases, the bushing must be stepped (with a shoulder). Bushings for machine tools in accordance with GOST 12214 have the necessary accuracy and dimensions, the internal hole in which has a constant diameter over the entire height of the bushing.

The number of holes, and especially the distance between them, is chosen according to the specific needs of the user.

When choosing a conductor mounting method, choose one of the following options:

  • A spring stop that will press the surface of the jig to the part due to the elastic forces of the material. Any flat spring with the required clamping force will be suitable as such a stop;
  • Fixation using self-tapping screws, which are screwed into the material of the part and keep the jig from being displaced by friction forces. This option is convenient because the resulting outlines can then be used as additional elements centering the future hole. In the case of chipboard, this option should be used with caution;
  • External clamps, under which you should place corrugated rubber gaskets. In this case, the weight of the conductor will increase, and the compliance of the rubber may disrupt the perpendicularity of the axis of the conductor bushings. Therefore, using this fastening method, first insert a drill into the sleeve, mark a hole, and only after that use clamps.

Jig for drilling for dowels and confirmations

The sequence and design of the simplest devices for accurately producing holes is discussed using the following two examples:

  1. Multi-position jig with clamp fastening (see Fig. 1). The initial body part here is a thick-walled aluminum corner. Due to the considerable length of the device, it is provided intermediate mount in the middle. When turning the jig at an angle of 90º, the increased wall thickness of the angle, which is superimposed on the surface of the part, is successfully used. The distance between the guide bushings is selected according to the most common distances for dowels or for confirmation.

Figure 1 — Multi-position jig for drilling holes with clamp fastening

  1. A two-slider furniture jig, with which you can make holes in two mutually mating parts. The design of the device is clear from the attached drawing (see Fig. 2). It consists of two guide rulers, which are connected by fasteners to a connecting strip. The presence of several holes on it allows you to install the bar on parts of different widths. Replaceable housings with a set of guide bushings with different distances between them move along the rulers. The conductor is fixed using a connecting strip, and with opposite side– a stroke limiter, which is tightened by a wing screw.

A jig for drilling holes greatly facilitates the work of furniture makers and other specialists who, due to their line of work, have to make precise holes in wood, chipboard, MDF, metal and other materials.

What kind of conductors are there and whether this device can be made with your own hands are the main questions that the article is devoted to.

Basic information about conductors

Conductors – simple devices, a kind of templates that have been successfully used in mechanical engineering for a long time.

They allow you to make a hole in the right place and at a strictly defined angle. The scope of application of jigs is very wide, from drilling machines to diamond drilling installations.

Today, every furniture maker has in his arsenal a set of these tools that allow him to assemble furniture cabinets, install fittings and perform other operations.

Conductors are needed in construction (for example, to make holes in the wall of a building) and various industries.

As a rule, only overhead models are used here, which are made from lightweight materials to facilitate the work of the master.

A furniture jig can be factory-made or made by hand.

Many craftsmen have such a trained eye and precise hand that it is not at all difficult for them to drill holes at the desired angle without additional devices. However, this requires enormous experience and, perhaps, talent.

With the help of the tool that this article is devoted to, even a novice furniture maker will be able to make precise holes for dowels and assemble cabinet furniture without complicated preliminary calculations and markings. This reduces labor intensity and, therefore, the cost of work and speeds up the process.

Before you buy or make a conductor, you need to decide on the types and purpose.

Overhead jigs are so named because they are placed on the workpiece to be worked with. They are either fixed to the part or simply held by hand.

Using overhead tools, for example, holes are made in MDF boards.

Rotary jigs are necessary if you need holes on the surface of the cylinder. Inclined, vertical and horizontal rotation axes allow you to drill holes at different angles.

Unified jigs are especially in demand in small batch production, where it is necessary to drill many holes in similar parts of various sizes.

This is possible thanks to the ability to retool the tool under different size details.

The scope of application of tiltable conductors is the need to make holes in several planes.

The sliding jig does not need to be fixed on the surface of the machine - it is adjusted to the specific surface in which a hole needs to be drilled.

It is more convenient to work with fixed models, but sliding models provide the master with a certain freedom of action when working on a single-spindle drilling machine, especially if several holes are needed on one surface.

Something about the scope

The jig for drilling holes is included in the list necessary tools for furniture assembly. One of the difficulties when making any holes is that the drill may enter the material being drilled at the wrong angle.

Correcting the situation can take a lot of effort and time, and in addition, not all errors can be corrected.

The jig serves not only as a template, thanks to which the master understands where to drill, but also guides the drill and prevents it from deviating from the given direction.

First of all, the tool is necessary for specialists who produce furniture, but during assembly it is not so uncommon when a finished furniture set does not have the necessary holes, for example, for dowels.

The jig is indispensable for drilling thin boards, such as chipboard, for making holes at an angle and many other operations.

Accurate, simple, quick assembly furniture always involves this tool. With its help, you can make a hole at any distance from the edge of the part, regardless of its width.

One of the operations in which you cannot do without a conductor is the installation of dowels.

By and large, dowels are a thing of the past, in modern furniture production already use other types of fasteners to connect various parts of cabinet furniture. However, connections using dowels are still quite widely used.

The main difficulty in assembling them lies precisely in the accuracy of the location of the holes, and in a strictly perpendicular direction, so that the parts can be connected at an angle of 90°.

If even one hole is in the wrong place or at the wrong angle, this will lead to errors that are quite difficult to correct. Special tool called a doweling jig.

Furniture is a common, but not the only area of application for drilling tools. The second important area is drilling pipes and other cylindrical workpieces. Conductors allow you to drill even small-diameter pipes.

If collected various types templates for drilling on one workbench, it turns out that they are very different in appearance and size.

Some are easier to buy factory-made, especially if making tools is not your hobby, others can be made with your own hands without much difficulty.

Multifunctional conductors from famous manufacturers They’re not cheap – by assembling them yourself, you can save a lot of money.

Conductors of our own production

The simplest tools are inexpensive, so many craftsmen find it easier to buy them. However, there are enthusiasts for whom instrument making is of some interest.

In addition, with your own hands you can make a truly durable tool that will faithfully serve for many years.

Another reason to make your own tool is if you need a template for custom holes.

There are a large number of drawings and video instructions on the Internet for making jigs for drilling with your own hands.

For this you need a set of tools:

  • drill;
  • corner grinding machine(Bulgarian);
  • standard set of locksmith tools;
  • welding machine– is not necessary in all cases, but for making the most complex tools with your own hands, it may be required.

Another argument in favor of making conductors yourself - every craftsman will probably have necessary preparations for their manufacture: wooden blocks, pieces of reinforcement, metal plates.

The template jig for accurately marking and drilling holes along it is so simple that even a novice craftsman can make it.

Take the fittings from square section 10 x 10 mm (or larger) – required length need to be cut with a hacksaw or grinder.

It is advisable to prepare the sections using a file and sandpaper. This is the basis of the future conductor.

Now you need to mark the holes. One of them should be located at a distance of 8 mm from the edge of the jig - at this distance is the central part of the chipboard board.

Furniture standards dictate the pitch between the holes - it is 32 mm. According to this marking it is necessary to drill holes with a diameter of 5 mm.

The jig is almost ready for use, but if you equip it with a stop, it will be much more convenient to assemble the furniture.

It is made from a metal plate 1 mm thick and 25 mm wide. The workpiece for the stop must be bent at a right angle and secured in a clamp together with a ready-made part made of reinforcement.

Now you need to make holes for the threads and fasten the two parts together with bolts.

The furniture jig can be equipped with half plastic bottle so that drilling holes is not so dusty. From the same plastic bottle you can build a small tray for collecting chips.

This is the simplest jig for drilling holes, which will make assembling cabinet furniture much easier.

With it, you don’t have to worry that the drill may go into chipboard board crooked or drill through it.

A furniture jig for drilling holes, a drawing of a kind of template that allows you to accurately install assembly elements and greatly simplifies and speeds up the process.

Using this device you can make holes for:

Dowels
futorka
pinch bolt
mounting holes for mounting plate furniture hinge
mounting holes for furniture hinge cup
center for furniture hinge flange
center of the eccentric coupler

The design consists of two parts:

Marking unit
retainer

MARKING UNIT

It is an “L” shaped plate made of thick sheet corrosion-resistant steel, in which through holes with a diameter of 8 and 3 (mm) are drilled horizontally and vertically. To ensure that the processing tool fits better into the holes, chamfers measuring 0.25x45˚ are made on its edges. The plate is hardened and ground.

RETAINER

Made from a steel circle, which allows you to install a furniture jig for drilling holes at the required distance from the edge of the chipboard being processed. The movement step is ten millimeters.

Drawing

Let's say we want to install a furniture hinge:

1. We lay the template on the facade.
2.
3. We drill a hole with a diameter of three millimeters to the required depth for the fastening screws of the cup.
4. We drill a hole with a diameter of three millimeters to the required depth for further processing. The prepared hole will be the guiding center for milling a hole for the flange of a furniture hinge with a diameter of thirty-five millimeters.
5. Place the template on the body.
6. We drill a hole with a diameter of three millimeters to the required depth for the mounting screws of the strike plate.

Let's say we want to install an eccentric coupler:

1. Place the template on horizontal surface chipboard parts.
2. Install the clamp into the hole.
3. We drill a hole with a diameter of three millimeters to the required depth for further processing. The prepared hole will be the guiding center for milling a hole for the eccentric of a furniture tie with a diameter of fifteen five millimeters.
4. From the end of the chipboard, along one center line, we drill a through hole with a diameter of eight millimeters to the required depth

When creating furniture, almost all parts are joined end-to-end. For this purpose, dowels are used in which holes must be made. This is what you will need a conductor for. Such equipment can be purchased or made by yourself.

Description and features of the device

The jig is a strip with several holes and sleeves. Such a device is fixed to required part, and then carefully insert a drill into the sleeve and make a hole. To secure two parts you will need one jig, making the fixation reliable.

Product advantages:

  • drilling accuracy;
  • simplicity and speed of creating holes.

It is worth noting that conductors are sometimes used in mechanical engineering, and not just in construction. Moreover, using this device you can make holes in cylindrical blanks and pipes. The conductor also allows you to do perpendicular holes.

Main types of equipment

All conductors used in various industries are are divided into several groups.

Methods and areas of application of the conductor

There are many ways to use this type of equipment. Naturally, the main area is considered construction industry.

Furniture industry

When assembling furniture, you may find that some holes are missing. It is for this reason that you will have to drill various parts with your own hands. To ensure that the work does not cause difficulties, it is necessary to use a conductor. This will make furniture assembly accurate and quick. The use of such equipment is really important if you do not have a drilling machine.

Although today there is large selection accessories and fasteners, dowels are still often used in the furniture assembly process. They must be installed very accurately, otherwise the parts will be displaced. To avoid such an unpleasant consequence, you should use a conductor.

Drilling pipes

If it is necessary to prepare holes in pipes and various workpieces cylindrical using a drill will not work best idea, since it often slips off, which means the holes will not have the desired shape. To make the job easier, you should use a universal jig.

It is worth noting that there is special equipment that allows you to perform perpendicular holes, and this is very important when processing rounded elements and edges of workpieces.

Purchased or homemade conductor?

As mentioned earlier, such a product is indispensable in the process of assembling furniture. Some people make these devices with their own hands, while others prefer to buy them.

Conductors are sold in almost any hardware store, however finished products may not be suitable for specific purposes. It is also important to remember that the cost of the device depends on the purpose, size and manufacturer. The most simple options are inexpensive, which cannot be said about professional equipment With a large number additional functions.

Many consumers prefer to make the conductor with their own hands. For this purpose you will need metal sheet or wooden board. Here, holes are prepared that will act as guides. In general, anyone can handle this type of work.

Making a conductor with your own hands

As already mentioned, you can make a similar product for drilling yourself. To do this, you need to prepare a welding machine, an angle grinder, a drill and several plumbing tools. You will also need fittings dimensions 10x10 mm.

  • The workpiece is cleaned with sandpaper and markings are made. According to accepted standards, the distance between centers should be about 32 mm.
  • Next, template holes are drilled.
  • The next stage is creating a stop. This can be a metal plate 1 mm thick. It is carefully bent and the place for carving is prepared.
  • Then both parts are carefully connected.

To ensure that the process of drilling holes does not cause any difficulties, it is worth using a jig. Such equipment is really indispensable in the furniture assembly process. You can buy it, but it’s better to do it yourself, because homemade device will definitely suit your specific needs.

A jig for drilling holes with your own hands will not be a reliable solution, but it will be beneficial in financially. If possible, it is better to purchase it in special furniture-making tool stores.

According to statistics from furniture manufacturers, most of the time is spent on marking, preparing and making holes. For this reason, the furniture assembly jig becomes a very important element.

The importance of using conductors

In order not to resort to manual measurements and sketches, it was invented special device- jig for drilling holes. Its use allows you to hold the drill at an angle of 90 degrees to the furniture, which eliminates deviations from the required direction. When making deep holes, the result of using this device becomes especially noticeable.

Jig for drilling holes in chipboard high quality must have the following qualities:

  • be useful for quick furniture assembly without the use of complex tools;
  • provide the ability to simultaneously make several holes, eliminating manual marking;
  • improve the quality of drilling.

There are different materials for the jig for drilling holes. Among instruments made of plastic or organic glass The steel version stands out especially.

It has such advantages as:

  • less susceptible to deformation;
  • exact direction of the drill;
  • does not heat up during operation.

The jig for assembling furniture with your own hands is very popular among home craftsmen. To make it at home you will need a small number of tools.

Experts recommend fixing this device using dowels. During production wooden furniture It is allowed to use only these elements together with glue. Anyway homemade conductor for drilling holes it is very useful in practice and without it it will be difficult to carry out assembly work.

The process of drilling holes for the conformat and dowels looks quite labor-intensive. The quality of its implementation will determine the reliability and appearance manufactured furniture.

A furniture jig for drilling holes with your own hands will help improve the quality of the holes made. Without their use, errors during manual marking cannot be avoided.

There are many different conductors from different manufacturers. Among them, there are also such specialized options as a jig for drilling holes at an angle. No less interesting option can become a jig for drilling end holes.

All this diversity allows us to simplify many complex operations, which may arise during the manufacture of furniture. With their use, marking and drilling holes of any complexity on doors, on tiles, and when assembling furniture can become a very simple task.

However, tools of this level are quite expensive, which is the reason for the popular question: “How to make a jig for drilling holes yourself?” This is not difficult to do and almost anyone can do it.

The process of self-manufacturing jigs for drilling

In principle, the jig for the holes can be made from scrap materials. First, you need to calculate the folding jig for drilling holes with your own hands. The next step is to work on the drawing. It can help solve a similar problem furniture template jig for drilling holes. You can find one on the Internet or from repair specialists.

A detailed description of all stages of manufacturing furniture jigs can be found at special videos on the Internet. But still important point remains to be done correct drawing conductor for furniture assembly. In each specific case it may be different and all features must be taken into account.

Conductor drawings for drilling holes with your own hands may not have the required accuracy. For this reason, there is a need for additional testing during manufacturing itself. It is also important to be extremely accurate and careful, otherwise the manufactured tool will not bring any benefit and can only aggravate the furniture production process.

The variety is very great, so you can hear the following question from novice furniture makers: “How to make a jig for drilling pocket holes with your own hands.” One of the secrets in manufacturing may be the use of metal bushings. This approach will extend the life of the conductor and make it a more reliable tool.
