Shoulder straps - essential attribute any military or law enforcement officer in most countries of the world. How long ago did they appear in Russia? How to distinguish them depending on a specific military rank? Are military shoulder straps different from those worn by law enforcement officers? Is there state standards regulating the appearance of insignia in the army and law enforcement agencies? In this article we will try to answer all these questions, and at the same time we will look at what the mentioned attributes of the uniform of junior and senior command personnel look like, including the major’s shoulder straps. Photos will also be presented.

History of army insignia

A number of historians agree that before an army functioning on a regular basis appeared in Russia, the external distinction of military ranks had very few criteria. Senior and junior ranks differed only in the cut of clothing and type of weapon. Some modernization took place during the time of Peter the Great. Officers began to wear gorgets (breastplates in the form of a scarf, on which elements of state heraldry were present). IN early XIX century, uniforms were introduced in the Russian army, similar in design to modern ones (“tailcoats”). Headdresses appeared that emphasized the difference in military ranks. Gradually, epaulettes came into fashion. For officers, they matched the color of their uniform, and for generals they were of golden shades. Some examples of epaulettes made it possible to distinguish, say, chief and staff officers. True, this insignia did not say anything about military ranks.

In the 20s of the 19th century, stars appeared on the military uniforms of Russian soldiers. One meant that the military man had the rank of warrant officer, two - major, three - lieutenant colonel, four - staff captain. The colonels, however, wore epaulets that had no stars at all. In the 1840s, non-commissioned officers acquired rank insignia in the form of transverse stripes, somewhat similar to the stripes worn by sergeants in the Soviet Army.

Epaulets and stars in a more or less modern form appeared in Russia in the middle of the 19th century. Some historians associate their appearance with the introduction of a new type of clothing - a traveling overcoat. Shoulder straps on which braid and stars were sewn (it is noteworthy that all officers, including senior officials, their size was the same) were attached to the shoulders of the uniform.

After the revolution of 1917, stars and shoulder straps, as one of the symbols of the tsarist regime, were abolished. But over time, the military leadership of the USSR began to return to historical insignia. First, stripes appeared on the sleeves, and in 1943, shoulder straps appeared. Photo and video materials from those years allow us to study their features in detail.

Shoulder straps in the USSR army

In January 1943, a Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR was adopted on the introduction of shoulder straps for the Red Army. From that moment on, this insignia was certainly present on the clothing of Soviet soldiers, and then Russian ones. Many historians agree that the appearance of shoulder straps in the USSR could be considered a sensation: in a relatively recent - relative to that moment - historical retrospective, this element of military clothing was openly despised by the Bolsheviks, as it was firmly associated with tsarism. In the Red Army, two types of shoulder straps appeared (the same as in the imperial one, by the way): for wearing in the field and for everyday use. The first ones were distinguished by a camouflage color (“khaki”) and trimmed with colored piping.

On the shoulder straps, intended for everyday wear, there was an emblem, a corresponding one, as well as brass buttons. The rank insignia of enlisted personnel sometimes contained the number of the military unit. One of the fundamental differences, according to a number of military historians, between Tsarist and Soviet shoulder straps is the size of the stars. In the USSR they were larger size.

Some historians note the following fact: since the introduction of shoulder straps in the USSR, the forgotten word “officer,” actively used during the tsarist regime, began to gradually return to the speech of the military. Under Soviet rule, this category of military personnel was called command and control personnel. Sometimes the expression “commander of the Red Army” was used.

Legally, the term “officer” was not established in the Soviet Union. At first it was used informally, in oral conversations. But over time, he entered the army document flow on a completely official basis. True, as historians note, in some orders back in 1942 the word “officer” was still present.

Stars on uniform

In the army Russian Empire, V Soviet troops(after 1943) and the modern armed forces of the Russian Federation, stars are one of the main elements on shoulder straps. At different periods of time, their shape and color could differ. There were pure gold stars on shoulder straps, silver and metal ones. At the time of approval in 1943, they were flat, and only over the years they acquired a three-dimensional shape - they became ribbed, with corrugated elements. The diameter of large elements is 20 mm, small ones are 13 mm. At first, the Soviet army was supplied with brass stars, later with aluminum ones. Until the early 80s, they were silver in color, then golden (with the exception of stars for field shoulder straps - they were dark green and made of steel).

These features of army stars, formed in Soviet years, remain relevant for modern Russian troops. Changes, if any, are small. Sometimes in the Russian army there are stars of khaki color or ordinary green. Also, parts made of metal now, in most cases, have smoothed edges. Other notable innovations include "false shoulder straps" on which various elements, including stars, are painted on. Their use is almost always limited to the field form. According to some military experts, the soldiers liked the “false shoulder straps” because of their convenience - ordinary metal stars could cling to backpacks, vests, shine in the sun and thereby betray the soldier to the enemy.

Main formats of military shoulder straps in the Russian Federation

Appearance of modern shoulder straps Russian officers was first approved by a Decree of the President of the country in 1994 and a similar legal act in 2010 (and its subsequent editions). The symbols characteristic of the Soviet era (the hammer and sickle) were replaced by Russian ones. According to the standards adopted at the highest state level, shoulder straps must have a rectangular shape (the upper edge is in the form of a trapezoid), have a color - golden or matching the tones of the uniform. On the shoulder straps different departments there is an edging of a certain color. There is also a button on these uniform attributes.

The shoulder straps of the Marshal of the Russian Federation have a distinctive feature - there is a star on their longitudinal axis line, and the edging is red.

The stars on the insignia of soldiers of the modern Russian Army are also located in accordance with the standards. The shoulder straps of an army general are distinguished by one star, the size of which is larger than that of lower-ranking officers whose rank contains the word “general”. The color of the edging depends on the type of troops. The shoulder straps of fleet admirals have a similar format. They have one star, larger in size than those on the insignia of vice and rear admirals.

Shoulder straps approved in the Russian Federation have such an element as gaps. Their number depends on the rank of the serviceman. Colonel's shoulder straps Russian army and major contain two lumens. Captain, lieutenant - one.

Rank and file of the Russian Army

The lowest approved in the Russian Army is private. It was officially established in 1946; before that, soldiers were called fighters or Red Army soldiers. Sometimes other words are added when addressing a soldier. For example, an ordinary justice (if we are talking about a reserve member). In the navy, the equivalent of the rank of private is a sailor. Soldiers who have achieved certain success in military service can receive the rank of corporal (in the navy - senior sailor). In the absence of higher commanders, they can control a platoon of privates (sailors). How to determine both military ranks by shoulder straps? It’s very simple: a private has the abbreviation BC on his insignia and does not have any additional elements. The corporal has a stripe.

The next highest rank for enlisted personnel is junior sergeant. As a rule, corporals receive it for some merit or good discipline, sometimes upon transfer from the army to the reserve. In the navy, the rank of junior sergeant corresponds to the rank of foreman of the second article. A soldier can rise to the rank of sergeant. A military school cadet can receive the same title. The highest rank in the ground forces is sergeant major. An interesting fact is that this rank and the one that sounds exactly the same in the navy are not the same thing. A sergeant major is considered two grades higher than a sergeant. On ships it's different. There, a military officer corresponding in rank to a land sergeant is called a sergeant major. Higher in the ground forces is senior sergeant. In the navy, he is also the chief petty officer. Next, a soldier of the Russian Army can rise to the rank of ensign (in the navy - midshipman), and after that - acquire the rank of “senior”.

The junior sergeant's shoulder straps have the abbreviation BC and two stripes. The sergeant has three, the senior has one wide stripe. The sergeant major wears shoulder straps with one wide and one narrow stripe. Ensigns and midshipmen wear two stars on their shoulder straps, and those of senior rank have three. The location of the stars on the shoulder straps is in one row.

Junior officers

The junior officer corps refers to the collection of army ranks, ranging from junior lieutenant (considered higher in rank than warrant officer) to captain (lower in rank than major). Often, military personnel present in battalion units, platoons and companies are also referred to as junior officers. Graduates of military universities (or final year students of these institutions) can receive the rank of junior lieutenant. In some cases (for example, if there are not enough officers to perform a certain group of tasks), this rank can be assigned to a graduate of a regular civilian university. However, only those soldiers who have served in the army can receive the rank of lieutenant. Similarly, military personnel are awarded the rank of senior lieutenant. Junior officers include soldiers with the rank of captain.

An interesting fact is that it is the location of the stars on the shoulder straps, and not their number, that distinguishes junior officers from representatives of the rank and file of the army. Here are some examples. A lieutenant's shoulder straps contain only two stars, while a soldier of lower rank - a senior warrant officer - has three. However, the officer’s stars are located next to each other and across the shoulder strap. While the ensign's is in a line lengthwise. The senior lieutenant has three stars, they are arranged in the form of a triangle, the distance of the stars on his shoulder straps is the same. The captain, in turn, has four stars. Three of them are in the form of a triangle, and another captain’s shoulder straps of the same size are placed in the area closer to the collar of the uniform. The junior lieutenant wears shoulder straps with one star in the middle part of the shoulder strap (slightly closer to the edge relative to the middle).

Senior officers

A serviceman who has received the rank of major can classify himself as a senior officer. An interesting fact is that the additional words spoken when addressing a military man of this rank in the reserve may coincide with those used when addressing a private soldier. The captain of the ground forces in the Russian Navy corresponds to a rank with a similar sound, but the phrase “third rank” is added. Above the major is a lieutenant colonel (in the navy - captain of the second rank), then - colonel (in the Navy - captain of the first rank).

If, when comparing insignia for junior officers and enlisted personnel of the army, the location of the stars on the shoulder straps played a decisive role, then for the senior category of officers the size of these elements is of decisive importance. Here are some examples. A junior lieutenant has one star on his shoulder straps. The major, who is several steps higher in rank, also has one star. But they differ in size. The major's shoulder straps are decorated with a larger star. The insignia of a lieutenant and a lieutenant colonel are related in a similar way. Both have two stars. But for a senior officer they are much larger.

Exactly the same feature can be used to distinguish the shoulder straps of a colonel in the Russian army and a similar insignia for a senior lieutenant. Both have three stars. The junior officer wears those that are much smaller in size. The distance of the stars on the shoulder straps is the same. By the way, the captain's shoulder straps are unique of their kind. Only they have four stars. None of the officers has more or the same amount. As for comparing the shoulder straps of military personnel of various ranks in the navy, exactly the same rules apply there.

Senior officers

At the top of the hierarchy of ranks in the Russian Army are the senior officers. The first level is occupied by a major general (in the navy he corresponds to a rear admiral). These are officers commanding divisions with more than 150 thousand soldiers. Next comes the lieutenant general (and this despite the fact that in the lower officer ranks the major is more important than the lieutenant). Historically, the lieutenant general took on the functions of more high level(for example, part of those that are under the authority of the general of the army). In some cases, a representative of the senior officers of the Russian armed forces may be appointed to a position in the General Staff or the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. As a rule, military personnel of this category bear the rank of colonel general. In the navy they correspond to their ranks. The officer at the highest rank level in the armed forces of the Russian Federation is an army general, in the Navy - a fleet admiral.

In order to correctly distinguish the ranks of senior officers from junior and senior ones, you need to take into account many nuances: the location of the stars on the shoulder straps, their size and even color. There are options when it is difficult to make a mistake, for example, if a colonel is wearing shoulder straps. We have already noted above how many stars he has on his shoulder straps - three. The senior lieutenant has the same number, but their size is smaller. Both military men have them arranged in a triangle - no one else has such an arrangement. There is a high probability of making a mistake when recognizing the shoulder straps of a major general. They have one star. The major's shoulder straps also contain a single star. The same situation applies to the attributes of a junior lieutenant’s uniform. A senior officer can be unmistakably recognized by the absence of other elements (stripes) on his shoulder straps. Another example is Lieutenant General. The shoulder straps of a military man of this rank contain two stars located lengthwise. Exactly the same as the ensign. But the top officer has more stars. A similar example is the colonel general. His shoulder straps contain three stars - the same as that of a senior warrant officer. The difference is still the same size.

Shoulder straps in the Russian police

Ranking by rank and the use of shoulder straps as insignia is used not only in the Russian Army, but also in law enforcement agencies, including the police. Due to some similarity in the types of activities - military and law enforcement, the principles of the arrangement of stars and other elements on shoulder straps in the police are generally similar to those that are characteristic of the Russian Army.

The rank and file of the police does not have any elements on their shoulder straps. The exception is the insignia of cadets, on which the letter “K” is present. Above the rank and file in the police table of ranks is the junior command staff, represented by sergeants, foremen and warrant officers. The key element in the insignia characteristic of these ranks are stripes and stars. Sergeants, regardless of level, do not have stars. Juniors have two thin stripes, sergeants have three, seniors have one wide stripe.

A police sergeant has shoulder straps with one wide longitudinal stripe. The rank insignia of a warrant officer is characterized by the presence of stars: a regular officer has two, and a senior officer has three. They are located in a row. The average command staff is represented by ranks from junior police lieutenant to captain. Their shoulder straps are characterized by the presence of a “gap” - a red stripe running down the middle. There are asterisks: a junior lieutenant has one, a regular lieutenant has two, and a senior lieutenant has three. The police captain's shoulder straps contain four stars. Next in rank is the senior command staff. The shoulder straps of this category of police officers contain two “openings”. Ranks differ in the number of stars. There is one on the major's uniform. The lieutenant colonel has two. The colonel's shoulder straps contain three stars. The highest commanding officers of the police are generals. They wear shoulder straps without gaps, with stars larger than those of average officers. The major general has one star. Police officers of higher rank have more: a lieutenant general wears shoulder straps with two stars, a colonel general wears three.

Highest military rank in the Russian Federation

The highest military rank in our country is Marshal of the Russian Federation. It was established by law in 1993 and replaced the title of Marshal Soviet Union. IN modern history It was assigned to Russia only once. It was awarded to Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeev in 1997. Document overview

The procedure has been established for employees of internal affairs bodies to wear uniforms, departmental insignia and insignia, as well as insignia for special ranks.

Uniforms are divided by categories of employees and types into weekend and everyday wear (both for and outside the formation), special, for external service (patrol and road patrol), and each of them according to the season - summer and winter.

The exit uniform is worn when taking the oath, presenting banners, being appointed to the honor guard, receiving state awards, presenting to immediate superiors when being appointed to a position and assigned a special rank, at official events, and on holidays.

The casual uniform is worn when performing official duties in all other cases.

A special uniform is worn when employees of individual units perform special service and operational tasks assigned to them.

Departmental insignia are placed on items of uniform along with state awards of Russia, the USSR, awards of other government agencies, and awards of foreign countries.

The policemen's shoulder straps still repeat the appearance and insignia that existed during the times of the police. However, many citizens did not understand these asterisks, and now continue to be in blissful ignorance of who is in front of them - a police lieutenant colonel or a junior sergeant.

In this post I will briefly tell you what and how. Fortunately, the ranks and shoulder straps are practically no different from those in the army. With the navy, of course, everything is somewhat different.

Rank insignia of Russian police officers in pictures with explanations

Special police ranks are assigned to citizens of the Russian Federation appointed to positions of ordinary and commanding personnel in internal affairs bodies. The special ranks of the police generally roughly replicate the military ranks in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation; the ranks of corporal and Marshal of the Russian Federation are missing. The noun “police” has been added to the names of special police ranks. For those who are retired, the words “retired” are added.

Description of Russian police shoulder straps

Enlisted personnel do not have rank insignia on their shoulder straps (see picture on the left). The only exception is cadets educational institutions police who have the letter “K” on their shoulder straps.

Junior command staff - sergeants and warrant officers. Sergeants have insignia on their shoulder straps in the form of rectangular stripes, on false shoulder straps they are metallic in color, on regular ones they are golden in color. Ranks, insignia and shoulder straps of the police of the Russian Federation

Russian police ranks are divided into four groups:

First group– junior command staff – sergeants, sergeants major and warrant officers.

Second group– middle command staff – lieutenants and captain.

Third group– senior command staff – major, lieutenant colonel and colonel.

Fourth group– the highest commanding staff – major general, lieutenant general, colonel general and police general of the Russian Federation.

Police officers are given ranks for life. And upon retirement, the “retired” attribute is added to the existing rank at that time (for example, retired captain, retired major or retired colonel, and so on).

Russian police ranks are assigned sequentially. A police officer must serve a certain amount of time. In Russia, all ranks are divided into first and second.

The next title in the Russian Federation is not easy to achieve. When awarding it, special attention is paid to the education of a police officer. But there are also moments when the next rank can be awarded to a policeman ahead of schedule, for some of his special distinctions for the benefit of the Motherland. Although if a police officer at that time served in the previous rank for less than half of the allotted period, then the early assignment of the next rank or promotion is postponed.

All police ranks in Russia, from cadet to police general of the Russian Federation, have their own insignia and shoulder straps. But how to determine the rank and position of a policeman? Here is a visual table:

This table below is already a little outdated, and has undergone changes, but not significant - on the shoulder straps of a private and other shoulder straps there is no “police” emblem next to the button, and on the shoulder straps of a sergeant major, according to the old one, there is a longitudinal wide stripe for the entire shoulder strap, and according to the new one, there is also a stripe longitudinal and wide, but short, which is clearly visible in the photo above. Well, the shoulder strap “General of Police of the Russian Federation” has been slightly changed, mainly in color. And so, everything is the same - the titles are as they are.
