Futsal is a sport that is not yet very widespread in Estonia, although it is ideal for our climate - no stadiums are needed, classes are held in the gym, and bad weather will not disrupt either training or championships. Moreover, it is much less traumatic than big football and is better suited for children. In general, having compared all the initial ones, from this year I decided to seriously take up the development of futsal football club"Cosmos", and Arkady Bely, formerly one of best players mini-football in , and now a coach whose clubs win numerous victories, writes MK-Estonia.
- Arkady, why Estonia?
- Everything is simple here. About ten years ago I found myself in Estonia - I was commentating on a match between veteran football players between Russia and Estonia. That’s when I met Boris Shipunov - now he is the general manager of the Cosmos club, but even then he was very interested in mini-football and the possibilities of its development in Estonia. And since I’ve played mini-football all my life, my interests coincided. For some time, this idea was postponed, but last year we returned to it again and now we have taken the matter seriously: the first children's futsal school opened this fall, I will be a consultant and will try to help bring it to a serious level. Amateurs play well here, but we will focus specifically on the growing group - we will start working with children, we will try to form teams of different ages and enter serious competitions.
- Why are football and futsal called different types sports, because they are very similar?
- There are really few differences as such. Firstly, futsal does not depend on the season. The second difference is that the game is much more dynamic than big football; instant reaction and mobility are required. Thirdly, and this is important for children, in the game each player has time to “communicate” with the ball - the space is compact, the game is dynamic, the number of players is smaller. Many players then move from futsal to big-time football, and after such hardening it is much easier for them to play. There is no such thing that someone can only play football or only mini-football - good footballer plays everywhere. But it is futsal that helps develop speed, reaction speed, and level of ball control. In addition, it is less traumatic - there are no long and hard tackles that so injure athletes, the game is softer.
- If we compare it with other indoor sports, it turns out that for the most part only professional football players know about futsal. Why is this so?
- A number of factors come into play here, one of which is that mini-football “plays” according to the rules of big football, so there is no opportunity to hold more tournaments than prescribed by FIFA, unlike, for example, basketball. Therefore, we are not well-known, but we would like more - after all, there is no seasonality of big football, you can play all year round, accordingly, hold more Cups and championships. But this is if we talk about the technical side. But in fact, futsal is not a forgotten sport at all. For example, in Russia it was isolated in separate species sports in the late 80s and now there are many teams at an excellent professional level. Russia’s oldest mini-football team “Dina” is one of the strongest, and in the 90s it was generally the strongest club in the world! Three-time Cup winners, winners of the Intercontinental Cup. There is something to be proud of.
- How did you come to futsal?
- I graduated sports school, but entered philology. A little unexpectedly, journalism has always been in my life, just like football. At the university, he still continued to play for himself. That’s when I met Sergei Kozlov, the president of Dina, and it was he who made the first professional mini-football club in Russia and made it a world leader. That’s when I became interested in mini-football - I still didn’t have enough data for big-time football, and I was very calm about it. But mini-football got me hooked - I started playing professionally. As part of the team, we won many championships and traveled constantly.

- For many athletes, their personal lives take a back seat. What about you?
- I'm lucky. Despite the fact that I got married quite early - at the age of 20, my wife and I are still together. Since 1993... That makes 21 years already. My wife is a philologist and teaches English. Our children are almost grown up - our son is 21 years old, our daughter is 18. There has never been any jealousy or suspicion in the relationship - we trust each other. Plus, Ekaterina is very patient and understanding - I think this also helps maintain relationships. I think the marriage was also helped by the fact that my horoscope is Gemini, which suggests some kind of duality. For me it is expressed in two different worlds: football and philology. Things are incompatible, but this allows you to find opportunities to switch. If we talk about sports, now I play less, I do more managerial work, and as for philology, I wrote articles, comment on matches, I plan to write a guide to playing mini-football - an accessible manual written by in clear language, without delving into the academic jungle.
- Don’t the children connect their lives with football?
- No. They have nothing to do with sports. My daughter tried it once, but it turned out not to be hers - she is interested in horse riding. The son is swimming. But they do it for the soul; they did not become professional athletes. And I think this is good - everyone has their own path, and forcing someone into sports because of some “family traditions” is not very reasonable.
- You said that you are characterized by duality, and your interests are very diverse. How do you manage to combine everything and what is more of you - a player or a manager?
- There's excitement everywhere. In sports this is understandable. There is also a drive in journalism - you comment on matches, you worry. In addition, a great opportunity to socialize and - again - still without interruption from football. Managerial work is a drive; I helped raise the clubs I worked with practically from scratch. I develop a strategy and provide advice. This is very interesting. Estonia now has a difficult goal, but we will try to do everything to achieve it. I plan to come once a month to help coordinate the work. While we are looking for a head coach, we are looking for specialists and recruiting kids. The good news is that the club is committed to professional work, and I will try to help with this.
The coach of Dynamo Moscow, which won the national championship gold medal for the eighth time, is Spanish. How big is his role in the team's achievements?
- Such a question is always relative. They always say: “The team wins, the coach loses.” It seems like any specialist would work well with such players. But everywhere has its own difficulties, and such a team also needs to be able to manage. Senor Perez was a very famous coach even before Dynamo. He won a lot in Spain and Europe. Therefore, I believe that his merit in success is exactly the same as the merit of the players. The fact that Dynamo could play without a coach, I think,

Are we, with our Russian coaching workshop, ready to close all positions in mini-football in the near future, or does inviting foreigners still provide something new and is this an objective fact?
- This is largely related to a large number legionnaires. If there are six or seven foreigners in a club, then it is much more convenient for a foreign specialist to lead there. Another thing is that there is potentially a certain number of mentors who could come to the fore. Moreover, they all worked as assistants to head coaches, including foreign ones. We can cite Yashin and Alekberov as examples. In general, Alekberov, in my opinion, is the main star of the club coaching department today.
The whole problem is that there is no institute for training coaches as such. Unlike big football, where there is graduate School trainers. Often it is simply difficult for a specialist to learn some basic things. And I think it's very important point. The growth of coaches is also limited by this. Therefore, mentors move on their own path, which, of course, slows down the process. In general, there will certainly be a percentage of foreign coaches, but their dominance is not expected.
Dynamo has seven Brazilian football players, some of whom have Russian passport. Other teams cannot boast of so many foreign players on their roster, because most of their foreign players do not have Russian citizenship. The sporting principle, one might say, is being violated. Is it worth leaving the rule on foreign players in the form in which it exists?
- I think that the restrictions on foreign players are absolutely adequate today. It would be possible to even remove the quota a little. Three players who can go on the court at the same time, especially if these players are of a very serious level, is the decoration of the league. There is absolutely no need to completely ban legionnaires.
Another thing is, indeed, the sports principle is violated somewhere. There is a citizenship issue in all leagues. This is not only in Russia. Such questions arise in many countries. It seems to me that the moment when foreigners cease to be considered foreign players is an unacceptable thing, since it precisely does not provide the opportunity for growth for Russian players.
After the eighth championship, won’t the blue-and-whites experience a decline in interest in the domestic championship, when their motivation will remain only in Europe?
- We shouldn’t forget about the financial component. In our time, let's face it, it was not so serious. AND more question motivation depended on the president of the club and the atmosphere of maximalism. Money was rather secondary at that moment. The athletes are all professionals. Now they earn good money, it seems to me that

All teams go through stages when a certain generation achieves some results and then declines. Therefore, Dynamo must sooner or later rotate its roster. She goes. They constantly have new players. The hunger of new players will provide normal incentives.
- Arkady, what can you say about the performance of your club?
- It was clear that we were entering the season with a large number of factors that were not yet clear to us. It was unclear how a coach who did not have this level of experience would work. How will the players work, most of whom we deliberately gave a chance to prove themselves in the Super League, and they had previously only played in the Higher League. It was clear that selection would continue throughout the season. As the championship progressed, we began to understand who still couldn’t adapt.
- We began to find pain points.
- Yes, they began to find it using the empirical method. This is the objective way. That’s what we wanted to do, so we went this route. In addition, we must remember that in terms of budget we are far below. There are no escape from growing pains. Very big difference between the Major League and the Super League. Now the team changes by about thirty percent. Contracts have already been signed with two Russian players. We will fight for the playoffs. Naturally, we got through this year and drew conclusions. I think the coach has become more experienced and has gained a certain amount of information. Therefore, we look to the future normally.
As an athlete, you are accustomed to setting only the highest goals and achieving the highest results. How interesting is it now for you as a manager to solve local problems? How difficult was it to rebuild psychologically?
- Of course, for me it’s perfect new story. I now have a slightly different attitude towards what is happening. Naturally, the victorious spirit cannot be avoided. He always is and was. But we understand perfectly well that objectively there are no such opportunities yet. After all, I’m a manager now, not a football player. When I play football, I go onto the court myself, naturally, I only count on winning. We do the same here, but we understand that there are no such financial opportunities. But for me this story is very personal, because in four years we actually made the club
There is no need to work with our players like stars. We need to hire coaches who should manage average, normal football players.
In big football, the level of play is constantly changing, becoming faster and more powerful. Can the same be said about mini-football? If we compare mini-football 10 years ago and today, what has changed?
- In fact, both big football and mini football have the same trends. Football has become faster, futsal has also become faster, more intense, and very physically demanding. Naturally, it has become more dense in terms of player opposition. There are more martial arts, more wrestling, zone defense is used more, which creates density. It has become more difficult to prove yourself individually, because there is a lot of backup, a lot of close fighting. I sometimes look through our archived matches: naturally, everything was calmer, not so tight, not so intense. Everything has its time.
We communicate during the days when the European Football Championship takes place. I can’t help but touch on this topic. What didn’t work out for the Russian team at this tournament, what were the reasons for its not very successful performance? What is Dick Advocaat's role in this?
- One can argue that Advocate did not fully prepare the team physically, and this is true. Didn't work well with some variety of tactical schemes. Perhaps there were mistakes in selection issues. Maybe there was a reason for some players who did not make it to the national team, but were hungry, to choose them over those invited. This is especially true for attackers. Objectively speaking, Pavlyuchenko is not having the best period. Pogrebnyak was not released much, although he had been scoring for the last couple of months at Fulham. All this can be said, but these are all just additions to the general background.
- Which coach would be suitable for the Russian national team now?
- It is worth paying attention to foreigners. There is no need at all to go by star names. I see a specialist of Bilic’s caliber who would be, on the one hand, independent, and on the other hand, quite painstaking in his work, and not venerable to the point of impossibility. There is no need to work with our players like stars. We need to hire coaches who should manage average, normal football players.

Biography
After finishing his playing career, he was the head coach of Dina for one season, after which he headed the selection department at the Dina mini-football academy. In the 2006/07 season, Bely also led the Azerbaijani “Araz” in the UEFA Futsal Cup matches (in the domestic championship matches the team was led by another specialist).
He worked as a football and futsal commentator on the Rossiya and Sport TV channels. In 2007-2008, he was one of the regular presenters of the TV program “Russian Football” on the “Sport” TV channel.
From September 10, 2010 to the present time it is executive director IFC Communist Party of the Russian Federation.

Bald Mountains, the estate of Prince Nikolai Andreich Bolkonsky, was located sixty versts from Smolensk, behind it, and three versts from the Moscow road.
On the same evening, as the prince gave orders to Alpatych, Desalles, having demanded a meeting with Princess Marya, informed her that since the prince was not entirely healthy and was not taking any measures for his safety, and from Prince Andrei’s letter it was clear that he was staying in Bald Mountains unsafe, he respectfully advises her to write a letter with Alpatych to the head of the province in Smolensk with a request to notify her about the state of affairs and the extent of the danger to which Bald Mountains are exposed. On the way, Alpatych met and overtook convoys and troops. Approaching Smolensk, he heard distant shots, but these sounds did not strike him. What struck him most of all was that, approaching Smolensk, he saw a beautiful field of oats, which some soldiers were mowing, apparently for food, and in which they were camping; This circumstance struck Alpatych, but he soon forgot it, thinking about his business.
All the interests of Alpatych’s life for more than thirty years were limited by the will of the prince alone, and he never left this circle. Everything that did not concern the execution of the prince’s orders not only did not interest him, but did not exist for Alpatych.
Alpatych, having arrived in Smolensk on the evening of August 4th, stopped across the Dnieper, in the Gachensky suburb, at an inn, with the janitor Ferapontov, with whom he had been in the habit of staying for thirty years. Ferapontov twelve years ago, with light hand Alpatycha, having bought a grove from the prince, began trading and now had a house, an inn and a flour shop in the province. Ferapontov was a fat, black, red man of forty years old, with thick lips, a thick bumpy nose, the same bumps over his black, frowning eyebrows and a thick belly.
Ferapontov, in a waistcoat and a cotton shirt, stood at a bench overlooking the street. Seeing Alpatych, he approached him.
– Arkady, it seems that the hegemony of the capital has been established in the domestic mini-city. Over the ten years of its existence, the team has won the national championship for the eighth time. What do you think allows her to consistently achieve maximum results?
– First of all, the highest quality selection of performers in our super league. Dynamo has one of the largest budgets, maybe even the largest. An important factor for success is the fact that many of the team’s foreign players are not actually considered foreign players, since they have Russian sports citizenship. At the same time, 6-7 foreigners plus good domestic football players give high results.
– Who will be able to compete with the blue and white in the near future? Novosibirsk "Sibiryak", which became the winner of the regular season?
– I think that the Ugra Gazprom-Yugra is gradually moving towards this. This year the team has already won the National Cup. And the series with Dynamo in the semi-finals, despite the fact that it did not turn out to be long, was stubborn. In general, Sibiryak is also growing. I don’t think his victory in the regular season was a coincidence; the guys went through a difficult path well. In my opinion, in the playoffs “Sibiryak” ruined the quarterfinals with “Dina”. It seems like with the eighth club, but by that time “Dina”, having solved many of its problems, had found optimal shape. Because of this, the semi-final series with the Ekaterinburg Sinara was already more difficult for Sibiryak. There weren’t enough Novosibirsk players for the decisive matches with Dynamo, and they weren’t even able to take advantage of their home field advantage.
– How do you evaluate the performance of your team – the Communist Party of the Russian Federation – last season?
– It turned out a little worse than I expected. The team had a hard time entering the season and more or less started playing football somewhere in the middle of the championship. In the end, we did not get a certain number of points. But according to Hamburg standards, they performed normally for debutants. Moreover, we do not have large financial resources. We hope that next season it will be better, better quality.
– Now, of course, all the attention of fans, including futsal fans, is focused on the European Championship. What can you say about our team?
– The national team, of course, was somewhat upsetting. From this group she could have reached the quarterfinals. True, even before the championship I didn’t have any special illusions about the fact that we were in some super-easy company and were obliged to beat everyone there. Whatever they say, the Russian team is a team of average European level. It’s just that in our country it is often perceived as somehow inadequate. Either because of the huge money that circulates in Russian football, or because of powerful PR, including around the national team and its players, our fans constantly have inflated expectations. But this team was able to accomplish some feats only with mad courage and crazy dedication. It seems to me that the first match with the Czechs played a cruel joke on our players. After that victory, they tried to hold two other meetings in class, as favorites. And the Russian national team does not have this class.
-Who is to blame? Advocate?
– Of course, the coach is responsible for everything. Now there is talk that we had the highest paid coach. The lawyer earns seven million euros, while the Spaniard Del Bosque doesn’t even earn two. But we pay him these seven million ourselves. Why invite such an expensive coach?! If the Russian Football Union is not able to resolve this issue more adequately, then this is the problem of the RFU.
– Now the Russian team is waiting for a new coach. In your opinion, is there a person among domestic specialists who could successfully work with the national team, or is it better to turn to a foreigner again?
– I think we should invite foreigners. My opinion: now there is not a single strong Russian specialist who would not be, let’s say, too connected with our internal football kitchen. We need an independent person. But when choosing a foreigner, it is not at all necessary to focus on star names. Our national team is quite efficient, and it seems to me that its next coach should take this into account first of all.
– Arkady, could you please explain why Russia is achieving success in mini-football and beach soccer, but not in big-time football?
- Two points. First: of course, there is less competition in mini and beach. Second: after all, our mini- and beach football players are less spoiled. Here, our leading player earns as much as the average representative of the first Russian big football league, or even less. And the “beach people” earn practically nothing at all. But emotionally, the guys are hungrier, because they have to constantly, every day, earn their daily bread.
– Who is your favorite at the Euro?
– I am a traditional fan of Spanish football. Although I don’t have the feeling that the Spaniards will definitely win this tournament. I see Italy as the hidden favorite, they are the hungrier team.
- And the Germans?
– The Germans are traditional favorites. But the current German team seems weaker to me than what it was even two years ago. Less fast, more German... Of course, they still have a lot of quality players, but overall the team has become more boring.
– You are known as a versatile person. Do you not live by football alone, as they say?..
– Well, for me the most popular form of recreation or leisure is often football. I keep moving, playing, it’s very interesting to me. Although, as a graduate of the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University, I still read quite a lot. True, there is little that is modern; I mostly re-read the classics.
– What are you reading now?
– I’m re-reading Chekhov. Stories. This is actually one of my favorite things to do - re-read Chekhov periodically. I'm also a neat movie buff. Of course, I rarely go to blockbusters, but I love going to the movies. Plus music. I'm an experienced guitarist. I grew up listening to bard songs and Russian rock. This is all left. My friends and I have quite a singing group, so all holidays are held in a musical vein.
