Before you start improving your voice, you need to make sure that this is really necessary. We've compiled two lists of reasons that indicate something needs to be done about your voice. 1. Heal
As we have already said, chronic diseases and the consequences of injuries do not count. “But even treatable illnesses have a noticeable effect on the voice,” Natalya Olenchik encourages you to cure kleptomania. █ Diseases of the cardiac and/or pulmonary system lead to shortness of breath and make the voice tremble.

█ Diseases of the reproductive system primarily affect the psyche. It’s not worth mentioning separately about colds and sore throats (it’s better to cure them as soon as possible so you can start testing your voice) - except that our consultant advises not to whisper if you have a sore throat and ligaments. “To speak in a whisper, you need to have good speech training and trained vocal folds. To speak in a whisper during illness - even more so. When whispering, the vocal folds do not close and a lot of air passes unvoiced: the muscle fibers of the vocal folds are overstrained. That is, whispering increases the tension of the speech apparatus many times over, even compared to yelling or singing.”

2. Speak with comfort
█ Give a 15-minute speech in full voice. “If during this time discomfort or even pain appears in the larynx area, it means that you are speaking in an unnatural voice. Usually the reason is not so much possible diseases how much wrong breathing and habits,” Natalya Olenchik is sure. The easiest way to discover your natural voice is by experimenting by trying to speak with correct breathing (more on that later) and different heights. And that's it. Even if you know exactly where your vocal folds are, and you are sure that they are not the ones that hurt during speech, stop rejoicing. “Pain around the folds directly relates to the muscles surrounding them. The folds themselves will never hurt, because there are no pain receptors there,” explains our consultant. █ Try not to smoke for a couple of days. “Cigarette smoke causes aseptic inflammation of the folds,” says Natalya Olenchik. “This, of course, lowers the voice, but due to the loose closure of the vocal cords, smokers develop a hoarseness.” Alcohol, by the way, contrary to popular belief, does not have a significant effect on the ligaments. █ The larynx is located at the level of the 4th–6th cervical vertebrae. Considering that you only have seven of them, it is no wonder that, even if they are healthy, the cervical vertebrae affect the quality of your voice. “If during a conversation you strain your neck or bend it unsuccessfully, your voice changes, and noticeably,” the expert assures. So relax your neck, keep it straight, put on your hat and take out the trash. 3. Find the key
█ “There are many ways to find your voice, and all of them become very controversial when trying to self-diagnose. Here is one simple and common technique. Believe him or not - it's up to you. But it’s better to make an appointment with a specialist to find your own voice,” warns Natalya Olenchik. The native pitch of the voice is revealed, in particular, by this exercise. Close your teeth and lips, take a full lungful of air and exhale evenly with the sound “mmmmmmmmm.” Since [m] is a consonant sound, the output you will get is something between “mmmmmmmmmm” and “muuuuuuuuu” - that’s how it should be. While making this sound, clasp your throat with your palm, as high as possible to the chin. Say the long “mmmmmmmmmmm” higher and lower. Notice the moment when the larynx vibrates the most (you will feel it with your palm). Most likely, this voice is your real one.

What is voice timbre

The pitch of each person’s timbre is determined by the total mass of the vocal cords - their thickness, width and length. In addition, it is known that female ligaments are twice as light as male ones. In general, the vocal cords in men are a separate issue.

During puberty, when boys become older, the so-called breaking of the voice occurs: the larynx strengthens and falls down, while its thickness increases significantly, as well as the length of the extension pipe. All this entails an increase in the mass of the ligaments.

The result of such age-related transformations is the appearance of an Adam's apple or Adam's apple. Boys develop a low timbre. In women, this period also occurs during adolescence, however, it occurs less dramatically, and the pitch of the sound changes more gently.

What does tone depend on? The reason lies in the way the larynx is positioned and the length of the extension tube. The lower the larynx is located and the longer the extension pipe, the lower the sound. Consequently, the roughness of the notes depends on how long the larynx is.

If we look at this process from the point of view of physiology, we learn that high sound is produced by short pipes, and low sound, on the contrary, is produced by long pipes. Thus, the longer the larynx, the lower the tone. The striated muscles are responsible for this - they are located in the front of the neck. Experts say that after several months of exercise, you can learn to consciously control these muscles. However, this method is not suitable for those who want to do it quickly.

How to lower the tone?

People give the most for this different tips. The simplest and most unsafe is drinking alcohol and smoking. But here it’s worth weighing your health and your desire to change the timbre. At the first glance, you can immediately understand that the game is not worth the candle.

It is not recommended to take male hormones to reduce tone, as this can lead to unpredictable consequences. In the event that they are prescribed by a doctor for other purposes, such medicines, of course, you can use it, however, this will be more a consequence than the purpose of taking the drugs.

A rougher tone can be made using:

  • surgical intervention;
  • use of folk remedies;
  • performing special exercises;
  • vocal lessons and lessons with a teacher.

Exercises for ligaments

There are several ways to exercise the ligaments:


  • singing vowels. This is the simplest and easiest exercise, for which you need to sing each vowel letter for 10 minutes. After this, sing these sounds a half tone lower, then again lower the sound by a half tone and again;
  • Using the pronunciation of the sound “zh” you can train the low vibration of the articulatory and vocal apparatus. To do this, tilt your head so that your chin is as close to your chest as possible. Start "buzzing";
  • In your usual even voice, stretch out the sound “a” as long as possible, try to make it up to 10 minutes. Then lower the tone, continuing to stretch this sound long and evenly.

We also recommend taking a few lessons from a vocal teacher. Breathing exercises will not only lower your tone by a couple of semitones, but will also improve your respiratory system.

To do this, you need to master the chest type of breathing, which reduces sound better than diaphragmatic breathing. With this type of breathing, muscle activation occurs, which entails a decrease in the larynx. And as we remember, lowering the larynx provides a low timbre. In addition, the sound support and chest resonators are turned on.

With correct, even posture you will be able to achieve maximum effect. If the diaphragmatic type of breathing is more suitable for singing, then the chest type is more suitable for speech.

During a conversation, you need to inhale through your nose, this will allow you to maintain the correct rotation of the larynx and its low position. In addition, you will be able to control the pace of speech. If you speak at a slow pace, the timbre will be kept rough, but if you speed up the pace, the sound will become thinner. With proper sound production, breathing should be slow and economical. Learn to speak calmly, pronouncing words clearly and without taking convulsive breaths through your mouth.

You can even do a small test. Hold a lit candle to your mouth and make a speech. If the sound production is correct, then the candle flame will be practically motionless. Your speech should last for a long time. If the flame fluctuates, this indicates that the breath is being wasted uneconomically: it should not come out in jerks, but should flow smoothly from the articulatory apparatus.
