A person's name is an integral part of the culture to which he belongs. Therefore, we are interested in knowing how and when this or that name arose, how it came into Russian culture, who was called by this name...

The name Ivan is unique in the entire world name book. Jewish in origin, it was never given to Jews, except in the era of early Christianity. And in Russia and all over the world this is the most common name. In France it is Jean, in Germany it is Hans, in England it is John, in Spain it is Juan (Juan), in Poland and the Czech Republic it is Jan.

It entered the church calendar at the dawn of Christianity: its first bearer is known - that was the name of John the Baptist, or John the Baptist - he baptized many of the first Christians, but the main one was, of course, Jesus Christ. Before the birth of John the Baptist, God predicted to his parents the appearance of a long-awaited son and named the name of the unborn baby, which greatly surprised the parents: Jews had never been called by that name before. John means "mercy of God."

This name came to Rus' earlier than Christianity itself: as you know, Prince Vladimir brought a new religion to Rus', and even before that, Christians John and Theodore served in his army, suffering for their faith and canonized by the church as martyrs. Total in church calendar 230 saints, holy martyrs and martyrs named John are commemorated.

This is the most democratic name: it was given to princes, boyars, merchants and representatives of democratic classes. The name Ivan in Russia not only became widespread in all social strata, but also became part of many proverbs and sayings, legends and fairy tales, songs and epics. The fairytale Ivan the Fool is well known, who in all stories turns out to be smarter than his opponents; he defeats them without physical strength, but wisdom and foresight.

According to popular beliefs, Midsummer's Day is July 7 (June 24, old style), or Ivan Kupala Day, magical power many plants acquire and even ferns bloom. Bonfires lit on this night heal all diseases, and Kupala dew is also healing.

There is a beautiful, but unlikely hypothesis that the popularity of the name Ivan in Russia was partly due to the fact that this name was identified with the name of the mythological progenitor of the Slavs, Van, which is why in ancient times all Slavs were called “Vani.” This is supposedly where the habit of calling Russians Ivans comes from. Christianization added only one vowel “i” to the name Van.

Like everyone else Orthodox names, the name Ivan acquired among the people several “domestic”, actually Russian forms. Thus, archival documents from different lands mention Ivanets Belyaitsa Gridin, a landowner in the Teslovsky churchyard (1500); Ivanko Bereza, peasant of the Kolomna churchyard (1495); Ivashko Belyay, Mogilev tradesman (1656); Ivashka Bobr, tradesman of Khmelnitsky (1565) and many other Russian people of different classes, baptized by this name. The forms Vanya, Vanechka, and Vanyusha familiar to us today appeared no earlier than the 18th century.

Nowadays, the name Ivan has received a kind of “rebirth” - now Russians name their sons with it as often as in the 19th century.

Ivan is a simple and understandable Russian name that never loses its relevance. Of course, some people believe that the image of a fairy-tale fool is unlikely to help a child achieve success. But in reality, the faithful and kind Vanya is not at all stupid, as fairy tales sometimes portray us: he has enough vanity and vital energy to clearly follow the plan and achieve heights in any business.

The duality of human nature in Ivan can manifest itself in childhood, and it depends only on his parents whether good or evil will win in him. When naming your son this name, it is important to understand that he can follow a crooked path, and to guide him in time, while his development depends on you. In the future, he will show incredible abilities, although he will never learn to make firm decisions on his own. And all because nature did not endow him with the much-needed intuition, but first things first.

The origin of the name Ivan is attributed to the ancient Jewish language, translated from which it means “Yahweh (God) had mercy,” that is, “the mercy of God” descended on this person. It is believed to be a form of the Hebrew name Yochanaan. Although there is a version that it did come from Van, known as the progenitor of all Slavs. Perhaps this is why during the Second World War the Germans called all Russians Ivans.

In the second half of the 20th century, the name Ivan became popular in Europe and Latin American countries, then it began to take on new forms and sounds.

Meaning

The translation of the name as “the grace of God” also speaks to its bearer: the guy’s character has been quite peculiar since childhood. It combines duality, the possibility of realizing different lines of life. A real darling of fate, he doesn’t perceive himself any other way.

The meaning of the name Ivan is simple, open, strong, but at the same time weak, rather aggressive bully. It is impossible to say that this boy will grow up exactly as his name says, because it gives him contradictory traits.

Fate

Ivan is a name for a boy who will not grab stars from the sky. Intermediate level ingenuity, the development of an inferiority complex, difficulties with adaptation in a team - all this can lead to serious psychological problems. Little Vanya needs the tenderness and support of his parents, so do not neglect the baby, otherwise his life will not go very well.

An active teenager, a strong and resilient man - this is how Ivan grows, sometimes forgetting that he still needs to take care of his health. May be interested in both sports and alcohol. He takes on a lot, tries, quits, finds new hobbies.

Thrifty, rather vain, energetic, Ivan can also be a slacker. He strives for heights, but he is constantly hindered. However, such a man can be successful, although failures always catch up with him. It is impossible to say for sure in which industry he will find himself. From a professional point of view, he can be a scientist, a bandit, a writer, and a mathematician. But one thing is clear - the name Ivan has a bright meaning: he will never be ordinary.

Thanks to his innate strength, endurance, and good health, a young man often begins his career with a difficult physical labor, and at a fairly early age, when the desire to become independent is just emerging.

Ivan creates his family very carefully: carefully choosing his bride, paying attention to her appearance, intelligence, and occupation. Loyal, loving husband at the same time he can glance at his chosen one’s girlfriends. He always does his part without any reminder. Ivan loves children very much and values his family. Ivan maintains contact not only with close relatives: he is always aware of the events and affairs of all his relatives.

Ivan's house is open to everyone. He does not quarrel with his wife’s parents, he is always friendly and generous with guests, so he has many friends.

It is interesting that according to the time of birth, the fate, health, character of a boy and a man can change:

  • Born in the summer, Ivan is a rather sickly child. Over time, he will grow stronger, become brave and inquisitive. The second baby is often called this, so he is pampered with attention. He easily gets carried away by something new and often cools down quickly.
  • If Vanya was born in the spring, he will be more cunning than all his namesakes. This is a mischievous child, but not mean, although this does not save him from rejection by his peers. In the future he may become a good engineer or even a doctor. This is a trusting nature.
  • A boy born in winter with this name studies well until high school, and then the period of “independence” begins, when the teenager wants to feel independent from the whole world. But he is not afraid of hard work even in the search for this independence. In general, “winter” Ivans are cheerful, creative, good-natured.
  • Autumn Vanya is simple, but unpredictable. Sociable children born in the fall are capable of becoming senior managers, as well as employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Character

Of course, a person’s fate largely depends on his character, and speaking about the meaning of the name Vanya, you can immediately understand that this is an ambiguous character and, accordingly, his life can turn out differently.

Since childhood, a boy needs a lot of attention. This is an affectionate child. If the parents do not give him the tenderness that he requires, the situation becomes more complicated, and there is a risk of veering off the straight and bright path.

Difficulties with decision-making and lack of intuition complicate the teenager’s studies, but at the same time they do not prevent him from achieving his goals, if Ivan has them. He can be quite successful, because he is hardworking, strong, and quite stubborn.

Good-natured Ivan, patient and open, is ready to forgive insults to loved ones. He values friendship and is devoted to friends and relatives. However, a guy can be hot-tempered and even furious, but this rarely happens. He is jealous, so even his closest friend should not court his woman.

Nevertheless, Ivan is usually “on his own mind.” He can be cunning and cunning, but such Vani are rather an exception, although nature endows those named by this name with contradictory properties.

He is changeable, which can manifest itself in refusal to complete the work he has started. And sometimes this happens literally a minute before completion. It seems strange to many how quickly Ivan cools down to what was literally the meaning of his life.

In general, this is a trusting person who strives to make his loved ones happy.

He forms the link between the Old and New Testaments, being the last of the Old Testament prophets and the first saint of the New Testament in which his story is told. He was the son of Zechariah, a priest of the Jerusalem Temple, and Elizabeth, a relative of the Virgin Mary. After the Nativity of Jesus Christ, King Herod ordered that all babies be beaten. Elizabeth fled with six-month-old John into the desert; they were saved by a rock that parted at her prayer and closed behind them. Zechariah was killed by Herod's soldiers, Elizabeth continued to live with her son in the desert and died there. The youth John, guarded by an Angel, lived in the desert, eating locusts and wild honey, and wore clothes made of animal skin. At the age of 30, John went out to preach about repentance to people, baptizing in the waters of the Jordan all who came to him in spiritual repentance. John was honored to baptize Jesus Christ and announce that he was the Messiah to the people. After the baptism of the Lord, John was imprisoned by Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, who condemned him for leaving his lawful wife and cohabiting with Herodias during the life of his former husband, his brother, thereby grossly violating Jewish customs. On his birthday, Herod arranged a feast, at which his stepdaughter Salome pleased him so much with her dance that he recklessly promised to fulfill any of her wishes. At the instigation of Herodias, Salome demands the head of John the Baptist. Herod Antipas did not dare to execute John, fearing his popularity, but now he is forced to do it. The body of John the Baptist was buried by the disciples, and the wife of the steward Herod buried his head in an earthenware vessel on the Mount of Olives. The head was reburied three times when, around 850, Patriarch Ignatius was shown in a vision the place where it was hidden.

NAME IN HISTORY AND ART

Ivan III Vasilievich (1440-1505) - Grand Duke Moscow since 1462, who devoted his entire life to the unification of the Russian state. From his accession to the throne, he showed himself to be a far-sighted politician, a cunning, dexterous diplomat, a man of exorbitant ambition and unyielding will. At the age of 24, he managed to pacify the proud Kazan king Ibrahim, surround Kazan with troops and force him to conclude a peace beneficial to himself.

In a tireless bloody struggle, the Grand Duke subjugated Tver and Ryazan. The princes of Yaroslavl, Rostov, and Belozersk had already ceded their possessions to him, and the Lithuanian lands were declared by Ivan to be the estates of his ancestors. Ivan subordinated Pskov and Mister Veliky Novgorod.

The Novgorod boyars preferred an alliance with foreigners to joining Moscow. In 1471, the Novgorod authorities, who had already called upon themselves the primordial enemies of Rus' - the German knights, concluded a shameful agreement with Lithuania, which placed them under its protection Novgorod lands. The soul of the conspiracy was the power-hungry wife of mayor Boretsky, Marfa.

Twice, in 1471 and 1477, the Novgorod militia was defeated by Moscow troops on the Sheloni River. The people did not want a war with Moscow and were afraid of foreign rule. The gunners riveted the cannons standing on the fortress walls, and the townspeople opened the gates and took the oath to Moscow.

In 1478, under the arches of the Vladyka Chamber of the Novgorod Kremlin, the historical words of Ivan III were heard: “There will not be a Veche bell in our fatherland, in Novgorod, there will not be a mayor, but we will keep our state.” The Novgorod Veche Bell, a symbol of the city's freedom, was taken to Moscow and hung on the bell tower of the Assumption Cathedral.

From now on, appanage princes are just privileged landowners, the Grand Duke of Moscow is the sovereign master of “all Rus'.”

Even in 1472, Ivan III married the Byzantine princess Sophia Palaeologus, and the double-headed eagle - the coat of arms of the Byzantine emperors - became the state Russian coat of arms.

Ivan III also put an end to the Tatars. 1480 - the date of the centenary of the Battle of Kulikovo was also a significant date for the final overthrow of the Tatar yoke.

Khan Akhmat was defeated by the cunning and caution of the prince. Later, the army of Ivan III liberated the western Russian lands captured by Lithuania and Poland.

Since 1485, on coins with the face of Ivan III it was written: “Lord of All Rus'.” Outwardly, Ivan III was stately, tall, with a courageous and stern face, with jet black hair and a long beard.

Under Ivan III, the “Tale of the Princes of Vladimir” appeared - the official genealogy of the Grand Dukes of Moscow. With all possible convincing, it proves the kinship of the Moscow princes with the Roman Caesar Octavian Augustus and, of course, with the first Kyiv princes. This was necessary to further strengthen the principles of autocracy.

The destruction of the old appanage-princely system required the creation of a new order of governing the country. In 1497, the Code of Laws was published - the first national code of laws.

Moscow is declared the successor to the political and spiritual covenants of Byzantium, which since 1453 fell under Turkish rule, and the stronghold of the Orthodox East. “Moscow is the third Rome, and the fourth cannot stand...” - they proudly proclaimed in Rus'. Moscow began to take on the appearance of the capital of a large state. The focus is on the construction of the Kremlin. What satisfied the princes of Moscow seems inconsistent with the dignity of the sovereign of all Rus'. Cathedrals, stone chambers, and Kremlin towers are being built in the Kremlin. The Kremlin is now the residence of the autocrat of the Russian centralized state. “From this era,” noted historian N. Kostomarov, “the existence of an independent monarchical state began.” The historian N.M. Karamzin highly appreciated the activities of Ivan III: “John left a state amazing in space, strong in peoples, even stronger in the spirit of government, which we now call with love and pride our dear fatherland.”
