Android as a modem. Android smartphone as USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modem. How to connect a modem to your phone

Question is how to use phone as a modem for computer via USB, is a logical continuation of the set the most interesting ways Internet connections, which we have been discussing for a long time on the pages of this blog. The possibilities of modern technology are so wide that there are practically no limits to imagination. It’s especially interesting to analyze the possibilities of mobile connections - these days we always have to go somewhere, move around, so the less tied we are to our desktop, the more ability we have to be online exactly at the moment when we really need it.

I already wrote about one connected via a laptop’s USB. However, not everyone has the opportunity to connect such a device exactly when it is absolutely necessary - they forgot to take it with them, ran out of money, forgot it, didn’t buy it, or simply your gadget does not have a USB connector. Today I will show you a way to access the network from any device and from anywhere - we will use the phone as a modem for a laptop and any other gadget. Yes, yes, the most ordinary phone or smartphone with a working SIM card, which will become a wired modem or wifi router for us.

To use your phone as a modem, you will need to do some settings on the computer, which can be a little difficult for a beginner. Therefore, the easiest way is to use it as a router that distributes wifi. Moreover, in this mode it can work both on Android and iOS, which is widespread today. By the way, the iPhone already has a built-in function to connect the phone as a modem and distribute the Internet from it. We are talking specifically about devices (it can be not just a phone, but a smartphone or even a tablet) with support for SIM cards, and therefore GPRS/3G/4G communications.

But it also happens that a laptop, and especially a desktop PC, does not have a built-in or external wifi adapter. It is in this case that the function of connecting your phone as a modem via a USB cable will come to the rescue.

How to use your phone as a modem for a laptop or computer?

Now let's take a closer look at these few schemes:

I don’t see the point in talking about the router mode here for a long time, since there are already two excellent articles that tell in great detail with pictures about its work on or - just read it and everything will work out.

Phone as a modem via Bluetooth

Now we'll talk about another wireless data transmission technology designed for shorter distances and less information - Bluetooth. It makes sense to use it if you have a normal old phone(not even a smartphone) with any moderately outdated mobile operating system, such as Symbian or Windows Mobile, with support for Bluetooth and Dial-Up Network technology, but, as was the case with models of previous years, there is no WiFi module. In this case, the Internet will be distributed to the one who receives this phone via a SIM card from a mobile operator.

For this method to work, a Bluetooth module must also be installed on the computer - it is usually built into modern laptops by default, so let’s look at how this is done on a Windows 7 system.

Before starting work, make sure that the Bluetooth adapter on your computer or laptop is turned on and in good condition.

First of all, we need to activate the tethering function on the phone. To do this, in the “Settings” section we find the “Wireless networks - More” section and activate the “Bluetooth modem” mode.

After this, you will need to add your phone to your computer as a modem. Go to the “Control Panel”, set the menu to display in the form of icons and find the “Devices and Printers” item and in the new window click on “Add a device”.

It will begin searching for devices available in at the moment to connect via Bluetooth. When your phone is detected, click on the icon. A new window will open with an 8-digit code. It must be entered on the phone for pairing.

After adding the phone, wait until the drivers are installed.

When this process is completed successfully, the Internet will work on the computer.

Android phone as a modem via USB cable

If in the previous block we talked about distributing WiFi over the Internet, now let’s talk about the possibilities of using your phone as a modem via a USB cable in case your computer does not support wireless data transfer. Moreover, it can distribute both the Internet received by a mobile phone via WiFi, and from a cellular operator via 3G/4G.

In my example, everything will happen on a Xiaomi smartphone running MIUI 9 firmware, but in bare Android it’s done exactly the same way—only the name and location of menu items can be changed. We connect the phone to the computer via a USB cable and go to its settings in the “ Additional features»

Turn on the USB modem

At this time, a window will pop up on the computer in which we will be asked to allow access to its resources for the phone - this is not necessary, but can be confirmed.

After this, if necessary, drivers will be installed on the smartphone and the Internet will work. This will be confirmed by a new connection, which can be seen in “Network and Sharing Center - Changing adapter settings”

Today we sorted out different options connecting your phone as a Bluetooth or USB modem, which are suitable for completely different devices, but which have one undeniable advantage - mobility, especially since now all mobile operators have very attractive tariffs for unlimited internet. For starters, the promised video about the iPhone, about how to make a phone into a modem by connecting it to a computer with a USB cable, and also detailed lesson about how to get online in various ways from a tablet.

This review is about how to connect a Wi-Fi router via a mobile 3G, 4G modem. This is a universal method for absolutely any model of Wi-Fi router and does not depend on the manufacturer’s brand. The only differences are in the design of the settings section interface, in the names and location of the settings sections themselves. Attention! Make sure your router supports the mobile modems of your chosen operator. You will find this information in the instructions section “device specifications” or on the manufacturer’s website. This guide is suitable for any provider providing mobile Internet services - Megafon, MTS, Beeline, Yota, Tele2, SkyLink and all others mobile operators !

Setup steps

1. Take your USB modem from the mobile Internet operator and insert it into the USB port on the router, and the Ethernet cable (or patch cord) that comes with the router, the first end into the LAN connector on the router, the second into the network card your computer.

2. On your personal computer (running Windows 7), go to the network settings section, do it this way: Start => Control Panel => Network and Internet => Network and Sharing Center => Manage network connections => Changes adapter parameters.

Right-click on “Connect via local network» then “Properties” then go to the menu item Internet Protocol which is “TCP/IPv4” and select the following items “IP automatically” and “DNS servers automatically”

Save and click “OK”.

3. On the router (on its reverse side) we find the IP address that is used to log into the router’s admin panel (usually 192.168.0.1), and access (often login: admin, password: admin)

4. Open your favorite browser and write where the address bar is - 192.168.0.1 (or whatever is indicated on the router), and log in.

5. We look at the router menu and find the “USB modem” item (or maybe 3G/4G or USB settings, etc. options), activate it and enter the data for your operator in the fields indicated in the image.

I will give a list of settings for most mobile operators, but let me remind you that you can look for the current settings from your mobile operator.

Some router models support automatic configuration depending on the mobile operator.

Some tablets do not have a built-in 3G module, so they can only access the Internet via Wi-Fi. The user can expand the functionality of the tablet by completing enough simple instructions. In this article you will learn how to properly connect a 3G modem to an Android tablet.

To connect to Android tablet 3G modem, you will need the following equipment:

  1. 3G modem with SIM card purchased from a cellular operator.
  2. Tablet with USB port.
  3. OTG cable (host). It comes bundled with the tablet.

In some cases, connection is made difficult by the fact that the tablet does not have a full USB connector. Instead, the manufacturer installs a Micro USB port. To connect a 3G modem in this case, you will have to use a special adapter - a host OTG cable. If nothing happens when you connect equipment via an OTG cable, that is, the tablet does not notify that a new device has been detected, then most likely the tablet simply does not support USB host mode. The only way out is to replace the tablet with a more modern model, which has no connection difficulties external devices.

If, when connected, the screen starts to blink, goes in stripes, and the device reboots or turns off, then the reason for this is the voltage level or current strength is insufficient to power the modem. You can try connecting the equipment to the tablet with the charger connected.

When connecting using an OTG cable, try replacing it with a better accessory or use a USB hub with external power to connect.

If you simply connect USB 3G to the tablet, it will be detected as a flash drive. To avoid this, you must first configure the modem by setting a special operating mode for it. Use the 3G Modem Mode Switcher program to perform this operation.

If 3G Modem Mode Switcher does not work, use another method to enable the “Modem Only” mode, which involves using the capabilities of the HyperTerminal program:

After setting the network port, edit the configuration file. Expand the "File" menu, select "Properties" and go to the "Settings" tab. Click on the "ASCII Setup" button. Activate the “Echo typed characters locally” checkbox.
A terminal will open in which you need to type the command “ate1”. A message should appear stating that everything went OK. After this, you can enter the following command - “AT^U2DIAG=0”.

In this mode, the modem will not be able to fully work on the computer, so it can only be used to connect to a tablet. If you want to return the equipment to its original functionality, repeat the steps described above, executing the command “AT^U2DIAG=255” at the end.

Another option: use the DC-Unlocker program to disable the CD-Rom and CardReader functions. The procedure is approximately the same:

  1. Connect the modem to your computer. Launch DC-Unlocker and click "Detect modem". If the device is detected, its technical characteristics will appear in the program window.
  2. Run the command AT^SETPORT=»A1;1,2″ to disable CD-Rom and CardReader.

If you later decide to return these functions to the device, then launch DC-Unlocker again and execute the request AT^SETPORT=»A1;10,12,13,16,A1,A2″. If your modem has its own settings management software on your computer, use it to disable PIN verification. This is usually sufficient, but depending on the model and manufacturer, the setup procedure may vary slightly. Therefore, when connecting a modem to a tablet, you need to pay attention to the features of the equipment, which are usually indicated on the mobile operator’s website.

Android setup

Having configured and connected the modem to the tablet, you can begin setting network parameters on Android.

Mobile technologies do not stand still, gadgets become obsolete, and the needs of network users for fast data exchange are growing. What to do if your phone does not support modern standards connections? Should I buy a new one or accept the lag in progress? It turns out that you can access the network not only from a computer through a portable communication device. Let's look at how to connect a USB modem to an Android smartphone.

The task is not as simple as it seems at first glance. The following errors may occur:

  1. There is no “Mobile networks” item in the Android device settings. You need to look for other firmware versions, otherwise you won’t be able to connect the modem.
  2. There is not enough power. An alternative is to use it with a fully charged battery, buy a higher quality cable or a USB hub with external power.

Required Equipment

Is it possible to connect a modem to a phone without purchasing it? additional equipment? Only if the device has a USB connector. This is more typical for tablets. In other cases, you will have to purchase an adapter from USB to the connector of your phone. Moreover, this should not be an ordinary cable, but an OTG so-called host adapter. It is intended specifically for external devices, and not just for pairing a mobile phone with a computer.

You also need to purchase the USB modem itself, which consists of a communication module (3G or faster 4G) and a flash drive where the connection settings are stored.

Setting up the modem

Before we tell you how to connect a USB modem to your phone, let’s look at setting up the modem mode itself. If this is not done, then it will be recognized by the Android system simply as a storage medium.

For Huawei and ZTE brand phones the task is simpler; special software has been developed for them. Just run it and check the required box. For all other phones you need to do the following:

The preliminary setup is complete, now let's move on to how to connect a 3G modem to an Android phone.

IMPORTANT. If you want to use the device on a computer, the changed settings must be returned. Repeat all steps of the instructions, but enter the following command in the terminal: AT^U2DIAG=255.

Smartphone setup

After preliminary preparation You can proceed to setting up your Android smartphone.

If all steps were completed successfully, then you were able to connect the modem to the smartphone. However, mobile device manufacturers are not happy with the situation when, instead of buying a more expensive and modern gadget, a potential consumer finds how

Many smartphone users often need to access the Internet. However, it happens that the 3G module of the phone gives an error and does not allow you to use the global network. Also, many smartphones do not have 3G, but this does not mean that users of such devices are not able to access the Internet. The problem can be solved using a special modem that must be connected to the smartphone. Let's look at how to do this.

Connecting a 3G modem to a smartphone

Connecting a 3G modem to your phone is quite simple. However, a caveat is that the device can often be identified as a flash drive.

In order for your smartphone to detect a 3G modem, you must do the following:

  1. Download the HyperTerminal utility.
  2. Install it on your computer.
  3. Find the device manager and find your modem among the installed devices.
  4. Right-click on the device name and go to the “Properties” menu.
  5. In this menu you will find information about the port number and speed. They will need to be rewritten and then entered into the “HyperTerminal” utility.
  6. Run the utility and enter any connection name.
  7. Now you need to enter the data you wrote down.
  8. After this, a command prompt will open in which you will need to enter the command “AT1”. The command line may not appear immediately, wait until it appears. This may take about ten seconds.
  9. Next, click “OK” and enter the command “AT^U2DIAG=0”.
  10. Wait for a response that the entered command is correct, click “OK” and turn off the modem.
  11. If your smartphone does not have a 3G module, download the PPP Widget application.
  12. Launch it and enter your details mobile network, which are on the website of your mobile operator.

Now you can connect a 3G modem and use it to access the global network. As you can see, the problem is much simpler to solve than it might seem at first glance. And to learn more about how to set up the Internet on your phone, you should read these articles.

Modern phones are multifunctional devices capable of performing a huge number of tasks that users are not even aware of. One of the popular options is to use a smartphone as a modem between the Internet and a computer, laptop, TV, etc. Next, we will tell you how to use your phone as a modem and describe the connection and settings process.

This type of data transfer is slower than via fiber optic cables. It will help out if your provider has temporarily turned off the Internet, or you are in a region where there are problems with the Internet or it is not connected at all.

First, let's look at a few terms that will be used in the text, but whose meaning is not known to everyone.

Modem- a device for pairing a signal with the place where it is received. Now you can turn almost any Android device into it.

Router- a gadget designed to connect several tablets, laptops, smartphones, etc. to the network at the same time. Our mobile will act as a router when we turn it into a modem.

Access point- a base for wireless connection to a new or existing WI-FI network.

Below we will look at everything available options, how to use your phone as a modem.

Option #1. Creating a USB Modem

This does not require any special equipment; the task will be completed in just a couple of minutes. Let's look at two simple instructions.

First way

Do the following:

Be sure to turn on data transfer so that the phone can distribute the Internet to the computer. This can be done through the quick settings menu in the curtain.

Second way

In it you will come to the same result, but in a different, shorter way. It is suitable if you often transform your smartphone into a modem. To do this, follow the instructions:

  • insert the cord into the phone and the socket on the computer;
  • swipe the curtain down, find “USB modem” in the quick settings menu (if it’s not there, add it through the tool for editing the list of curtain icons).

After this, a message will appear in the curtain stating that the connection has been established and you will be asked to configure the connection.

There is only one disadvantage of this method: the data transfer speed is limited by USB speed. This is not so noticeable if you use 3G, but when you connect your phone to fourth generation networks there will be losses.

Option #2. Turning your phone into a WI-FI router

This is convenient if you are in an area where there is no WI-FI and want to access the Internet through a tablet that does not have a SIM card. In this way, you can distribute Internet from your smartphone to a laptop, tablet and desktop PC, if it has a Wi-Fi module. Follow these steps:

  • in your phone settings, click “More”;
  • go to “Modem Mode”;
  • click on the “WI-FI Access Point” menu and remember the name of the network, and most importantly, the password that you will have to enter from the device (this way you can broadcast the network even to your TV).

For convenience, network data configuration is provided, where you can:

  • change the password to make it easier to enter in the future;
  • change the security, but we do not recommend choosing something instead of WPA2 PSK - it provides the highest security;
  • change the name of the network;
  • regulate the number of people who can simultaneously use the Internet;
  • restore factory settings.

There are plenty of apps on the Play Market that replace stock services, but using them won't give you major improvements since the built-in features offer customizations that will satisfy most users.

Option #3. Connecting devices via Bluetooth

This product still does its job perfectly. Using the “blue tooth” you can connect your laptop and phone, after which you can use your smartphone as a Bluetooth modem. This is very easy to do:

  • Find out if your PC or laptop has a built-in Bluetooth module; if not, you can use an external adapter;
  • open the “Settings” of your mobile phone, activate “bluetooth”;
  • Find your computer in the list of devices and select it to pair.

After these three steps, the phone became a Bluetooth modem. The same can be done in reverse side, that is, from PC to mobile device. To do this:

Video on how to connect your phone as a modem

We analyzed popular methods of turning a phone into a modem to distribute mobile internet for computer and other devices. The most optimal and multifunctional is “Access Point”, because there is no speed limit, Wi-Fi has decent stability, and you can connect several devices to your smartphone wirelessly at once. But what use mobile phone What modem you choose is up to you.
