Under the leadership of Alevtina Chernikova, in 2014 NUST MISIS managed to become one of the best universities in the world according to QS World University Rankings, and in 2015 - according to THE World University Rankings. In 2016, NUST MISIS was the only Russian university to be included in THE 20 World’s Best Small Universities Ranking, and also achieved the highest dynamics in the regional and world QS rankings among Russian universities. The goal of NUST MISIS is to gain leadership positions in the field of materials science, metallurgy and mining by 2020 and reach a new level in the field of biomaterials, nano- and IT technologies.

The Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, in whose dormitory the founders of Alfa Group once became friends, is now a source of personnel not only for metallurgy and the Forbes list. In 2008, MISiS was awarded the status of a national research university, the university changed its name to NUST MISIS and began to combine education with scientific research, for which new buildings and laboratories were built. Forbes Woman talked to the current rector of NUST MISIS, Alevtina Chernikova, about what the technical university is striving for.

Laboratory

In July 2016, our university hosted Russia’s first international festival of inventions and bold technical solutions, Moscow Mini Maker Faire, the ideologist and main organizer of which was the NUST MISIS FabLab laboratory. It was opened in April 2012 with the support of MIT and became the first accredited FabLab center in Russia. MIT Professor Neil Gershenfeld, who is the founder of the FabLab movement, noted that the best FabLab in the world are in Moscow and Barcelona.

Every year, MIT students undergo two weeks of training with us together with students from Skoltech and NUST MISIS: a week of theory, a week of practice, and specific work in the final - for example, robotic toys for children with disabilities. We are now expanding the FabLab area, and are also discussing with Evraz the possibility of creating an “engineering kitchen” at our base, a project for schoolchildren.

The subject of our special attention is dormitories. Students from all regions of Russia and 66 countries of the world study at NUST MISIS. Therefore, they need conditions not only for studying and immersion in research activities, but also for living. For the third year in a row the campus

"Metallurg" maintains the status of the best hostel in Moscow. This is very important for us. In addition, in April 2016, the reconstruction of the Dom-Kommune dormitory was completed. This is a legendary monument of the era of constructivism; less than ten such buildings have survived in Moscow, and completely unique living conditions have been created there for our students. At the 2016 All-Russian competition “House-commune”, NUST MISIS was recognized as the best hostel in the country.

Competition

In 2013, NUST MISIS became the winner of the program to increase the competitiveness of Russian universities. Our goal is to become a global leader in the field of materials science, metallurgy and mining, as well as to significantly strengthen our position in the field of IT technologies and biomedicine. But, you know, our students are already no worse than those studying at MIT. For example, Dmitry Vasiliev [co-owner of Karfidov Lab, which participated, in particular, in modeling the torch for the Winter Olympics in Sochi], graduating from NUST MISIS, went to MIT for a year to study. When he returned, I asked if it was difficult for him there. He replied: “No, my knowledge was enough to pass the session with dignity and pass the tests that MIT offers.”

I would like to say a few more words about Alexey Karfidov. Each dorm has self-study rooms, and often these rooms are empty. But this never happens here thanks to the campus student council. Karfidov still heads it. Students there are constantly busy: they solve business cases, play “What? Where? When?”, first-year students watch films in foreign languages and discuss them with a tutor. And this does not stop Alexey from working on his innovative projects. Thus, in June, Karfidov Lab presented a prototype of a portable wireless coffee machine, iBarman, that can fit into a car cup holder and can be controlled using a phone. NUST MISIS graduates often propose projects for the development of the university related to startups.

Candidates

Since December last year, as part of the professional navigation program, we have a new project with the working title “Two days at NUST MISIS,” designed for schoolchildren. The guys are immersed in university life for two days - lectures, meetings with scientists in scientific laboratories, in the evening the student council arranges for them a sports competition, a creative competition or a quest, and the next day they get acquainted with the work of FabLab. During this time, they can get an idea of the level of education at our university.

High-quality university education is the result of the development of basic, fundamental components - education, science, innovation and extracurricular activities. The catalyst for this process is the creative environment created at the university, covering all areas of the university’s activities, and an indispensable condition for success is constant systematic interaction with the business community. Together with our employers - leading Russian and foreign companies - we develop business cases with real production tasks, and hold case championships together with Norilsk Nickel, Evraz, Severstal, Eurochem, SUEK.

This format turned out to be very popular. Thus, in December 2014, 520 undergraduate students of the Mining Institute solved real business cases developed jointly with Evrazholding, the results were assessed by representatives of our employing companies. In April 2015, we organized the second stage of solving business cases, and 45 universities in the country joined us, and in November, 95 universities already expressed their desire to participate in our project.

Money

The university’s budget after merging with the Mining Institute amounted to 7.2 billion rubles in 2015. It did not increase much - before the merger, the budget of NUST MISIS was about 5 billion rubles, and the budget of the Mining University was about a billion rubles. In 2015, the budget increased due to the creation of the High Complexity Prototyping Engineering Center - the state allocated money for this project. The funds we receive from the federal budget make up only part of our budget. If you look at the structure of the budget, we get a third from education, another third from research activities: these are primarily won competitions, grants and agreements with the business community.

Digital production

This fall we are planning the official opening of the High Complexity Prototyping Engineering Center, for which equipment has already been purchased, highly qualified employees have been attracted who can not only work on this equipment, but also creatively solve the problems that Russian industry poses to the center. In addition, we are preparing master’s programs in digital production, which will be implemented at the center. The first such program, “Technologies and materials of digital production,” has already been created by NUST MISIS and the Institute of Architecture of Catalonia (Barcelona) on the basis of FabLab. This is so far the only master's program in Russia in the field of digital production and new materials. A second similar master's program is being created jointly with MIT on the basis of the Prototyping Center; enrollment is planned for 2017. At the same time, we are working on the issue with the Technical University of Milan - I think that by 2017 we will have a joint master’s program with Milan.

Politician, honorary worker of higher vocational education of the Russian Federation, author of articles, brochures and scientific works, rector of one of the country's leading universities, winner of the "Rector of the Year 2016" competition, laureate of the Russian Government Prize in the field of science and education, and, finally, Doctor of Economic Sciences - all this is about one person: Alevtina Anatolyevna Chernikova.

The extensive professional activity of this unusually talented woman began at the very end of the eighties, when she brilliantly graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Voronezh State University (VSU) in a not entirely female field: industrial planning. Afterwards, she was offered a place at the Scientific Research Institute. L.D. Shevyakov, who dealt with the issues of the Kursk magnetic anomaly.

The reasons for Alevtina’s departure from the research institute are unknown, but in 1993 Chernikova decided to completely change direction and continued her career in a private company engaged in the creation and promotion of automatic control systems for various organizations and factories. Here she dealt only with finance and accounting. Having held this position for 10 years, Alevtina Anatolyevna Chernikova decides to leave Systemservice. This is understandable, because in parallel with this work, the woman had a wonderful career as a scientist.

And she began her full development in the field of finance back in 1997, when she was one of the first in the country to decide to receive the title of professional accountant. To do this, Chernikova completed a special course at the Institute of Professional Accountants and Auditors of Russia, which has been operating since 1997, and received the skills of a chief accountant, consultant and expert in this field.

Dramatic changes happened in Alevtina Anatolyevna’s life at the same time, at 97, when she began her teaching career. The starting point for this was NUST MISIS (formerly the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys). In the first couple of years, the energetic woman quite successfully combined lecturing with her work at Systemservice, but since 2003 Chernikova decided to devote herself entirely to teaching. And I must say, it was a very correct decision. Moreover, a year earlier she excellently defended her dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences on an unusual topic related to the development of the dairy industry in the Voronezh and Belgorod regions close to her.

Further, in 2004, Alevtina received the position of deputy director of NUST MISIS. It is in charge of economic and financial issues. Her teaching skills are also gaining momentum. Thus, in 2005, Chernikova was quite deservedly awarded the title of Associate Professor of the Department of Economics.

The year 2007 again turned out to be a “turning point” in the career of a successful woman. She voluntarily leaves the position of Deputy Director for Finance and Economics, confidently changing it to the leadership post of one of the MISiS branches - the Stary Oskol Technological Institute. Here Alevtina served until 2012.

But if anyone thinks that Chernikova has been sitting with her hands folded all this time, they will be deeply mistaken. Indeed, in parallel with her managerial activities, Alevtina Anatolyevna wrote a dissertation, which she subsequently successfully defended, and, as a result, received the coveted academic title of Doctor of Economic Sciences. And then the title of professor.

In 2012, after leaving the post of head of the branch, Alevtina received a promotion and on May 17 became vice-rector of NUST MISIS. And literally five days later, on the 22nd - the acting rector of the university.

A year later, Chernikova becomes the head of the educational institution.

Over the five years that Alevtina has held the position of rector, NUST MISIS has risen significantly in the QS World University Rankings and THE World University Rankings and ARWU and has become one of the 500 best universities in the world. In Russia, he is listed in the top ten. In addition, Chernikova achieved competent distribution of budget funds, thanks to which a new modern student town has grown in the Moscow region, in which thousands of students happily live and work.
