It has been operating since 2007. In just over 8 years, it has registered more than 45 million visits. These figures show that despite the fact that more than 70 years have passed since the end of the war, many families are still searching for where their relatives died and are buried. And today, the Memorial ODB (hereinafter simply ODB) is the most complete electronic source containing information about the nominal losses of the Red Army in the Great Patriotic War. However, one must understand that the OBD is not a “Book of Memory”, but a bank of archival documents that allows bank users to independently study and analyze many documents, from military to modern, stored in various archives. And to find information, despite the numerous errors made in wartime reports.

Alas, complete information about all those killed and disappeared in the war is not here and never will be. But there is constant replenishment, new documents are being processed, and the likelihood of finding a mention of a person increases with each update of the ODB.
The OBD contains documents from various archives: the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (TsAMO), its branches, the Central Naval Archive of the Ministry of Defense (TSVMA), the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA), the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF) and several of its regional branches , the Office of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for perpetuating the memory of those killed in defense of the Fatherland (Office for UPZO), a number of regional and district military registration and enlistment offices. Documents from several regional archives and museums in Latvia were also downloaded, where they were transferred from the military registration and enlistment offices of the respective regions. What documents are collected in the data bank?

Firstly, personalized reports from units about irretrievable losses . Military units were required to regularly send these reports to the Department for Accounting for Personal Losses (since 1942 - to the Central Bureau for Accounting for Losses on the Fronts) of the Head of the Praforma of the Red Army. Reports had to be drawn up on a specific form containing identifying information about military personnel, including the names and places of residence of relatives, as well as information about the reason for departure and the place of burial in the event of death. Many of them are designed this way. And in others, the information is incomplete, initials are indicated somewhere instead of first and middle names, and certain columns are not filled in. And where reports were not written on forms, a free form is generally possible.

The second important type of documents is death registers and burial registers , which were conducted in medical institutions. Unfortunately, the archives did not contain books from all hospitals and medical battalions, and for some of those present there, not for the entire period of operation. But from time to time new documents surface here too.
The third type of documents is funeral notices . There are not many of them in the data bank yet. The fact is that the bulk of the notices were delivered to relatives or remained in the military registration and enlistment offices at the place of delivery (in this case, the military registration and enlistment office issued its own notice based on the document received). The archive included only those that the military registration and enlistment offices returned to the Loss Accounting Department, since either the notice was sent again, or it was impossible to deliver it to the addressee, or it turned out that the serviceman was alive, and the notice was issued in error. Work has now begun on processing funeral notices preserved in military registration and enlistment offices and loading them into the OBD.

Separate array - expulsion orders for officers from the lists of Red Army personnel. Logically, such orders should have noted all the dead and missing officers, however, judging by the content of the ODB, this is not the case.
The OBD also contains documents on Soviet prisoners of war . Here, again, we cannot talk about completeness, and there is no single storage place for them. Documents about prisoners of war are scattered all over the world. There are many cards and lists in TsAMO, documents are in the RGVA, GARF and its regional branches, FSB archives, archives and memorial complexes in the countries where Nazi camps were located, and the US National Archives. And how many documents about prisoners of war are contained in the regional archives of the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus still requires clarification.

A special place is occupied by the documents of the so-called door-to-door surveys . After the end of the war in 1946-1947. District military registration and enlistment offices collected questionnaires from residents of their territory regarding those who had not returned from the war, whose fate was unknown, with information about their last contact. This data was sent to the Main Personnel Directorate Soviet army, where information about military service was checked and a decision was made for each person. The decisions were sent back to the military registration and enlistment offices, and based on them, the military registration and enlistment offices issued notices. However, the dates of missing persons indicated in these decisions are at odds with reality. If a serviceman did not live in occupied territory, as a rule, he was declared missing 3 months after the last news, and if in occupied territory - 3 months after the liberation of his place of residence. So it turned out that the person could have disappeared in 1941, but it was officially reported that he disappeared in 1944. In the documents of door-to-door surveys, most often there is no information about the real fate; in most cases, even the unit in which the soldier served was not indicated. It’s good if there is a field mail number from the letters: just some of it can be identified, and this is already a serious clue for further searches.
From other documents of the war and first post-war times, it can be noted lists of those buried in a specific place, lists of those released from captivity and those who escaped encirclement (according to other documents, these people are mostly listed as missing).
But information about a person’s burial in a specific place, indicated in a loss report, medical document, funeral notice and other documents from the forties and even fifties, does not mean that the person is still buried there. After the war, numerous reburials of remains took place in memorial cemeteries. Unfortunately, names were often lost in the process. In 1991, by order of the Ministry of Defense, both in the USSR and in the countries of the socialist camp, passports of Soviet military graves began to be compiled. Each passport indicated the number of those buried, the number of known ones (lists were attached to them) and the number of unknown ones. But after the collapse of the USSR, most of the former republics did not send their already completed passports. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation received passports of burials from the Byelorussian SSR, partly the Ukrainian SSR and one region of the Latvian SSR. Passports from Poland were not accompanied by paper lists of those buried. And the RSFSR did not receive passports for all burials. All these passports were stored in the Military Memorial Center of the RF Armed Forces (now the Directorate for UPZO) and were loaded into the OBD. IN last years Thanks to the representative offices of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for military memorial work, created in a number of countries, new burial passports appeared (and are still appearing to this day) in these countries. In 2014, burials on the territory of the Russian Federation were re-certified, the results of which consistently supplement the ODB. But it is necessary to take into account that in the lists of buried people attached to passports, information about a person is minimal - full name, rank, year of birth (not always), date of death. Or even initials instead of first and middle names. For common surnames and given names, it is often impossible to determine who exactly is being referred to without other documents. A person can be reliably considered identified if there is a document about his death in these places or on approximately the same date. It must be recognized that the lists of those buried are not always accurate, and some people are listed on their passports as buried in two (and sometimes three!) places at the same time.
A separate array is represented in the OBD documents from military transit points (runway). These documents are not associated with losses, therefore the search for them is carried out separately from the main array. But using these documents you can try to find traces of a person about whom it is not even known in which unit he served. Limited information about where the person was sent from the runway may be the key to further search.
More than 1000 have been loaded into the OBD as an additional application printed “Books of Memory” created in the regions. These books contain information from various sources, and there are cases when, except in the “Book of Memory,” there is no mention of a person.

How to search for information in the OBD?

So, the main types of documents contained in the OBD are listed. Now is the time to consider the nuances associated with search. A lot of them. And the lack of information upon request does not always mean that there is no data about the person in the OBD. But first, you should figure out which version of the OBD is best to use and why you need to register on the site.
On the main page of the site in the upper right corner it says that the work is carried out in new version, and those who want to use the old version can follow the link. The difference, first of all, is that the old (original) version uses flash technology, which is not supported in tablets and mobile phones. So those who want to work from these devices have no choice. But those who prefer to use desktop computers and laptops can choose. The main advantage of the old version is more convenient work with an image of a document page. The advantages of the new version are the display of the number of records as a result of the request (up to 10,000), the ability to indicate the location of the primary burial in a separate field in the request. And most importantly - all the innovations that will be introduced in the future software OBD will only apply to the new version. Just the ability to search by the place of primary burial, indicated in a separate field, is an innovation that appeared quite recently. Based on this information, everyone can choose a convenient version for work.
As for registration on the site, it is completely optional. To search for specific people and view the information found, registration is not required. Registration is required for those who want to search for cases using archival details or search for documents by their numbers and dates, as well as for those who want to enter additional information for a person’s record. We will talk about additional information a little later, but for now we will simply note that until the need arises, you don’t have to register.
Now about the search itself. The fields on the main page are intended for people with little computer experience. By entering their full name and year of birth, they can immediately see the result of the request. For those who are not afraid to work with a computer, it is better to immediately switch to the advanced search mode, where the user has many opportunities to carry out a targeted search.

The main rule when making requests: if you did not find the person you were looking for, this does not mean that the information in the ODB is missing. Maybe you just need to look differently. There are several reasons why an existing record is not found when entering absolutely accurate information. Firstly, some fields in the document may not be filled in. For example, the year of birth is not indicated. In this case, if you specify the year of birth in the request, the record will not be found. The same thing will happen if the request specifies an exact date of birth, which is missing in most documents. Most often, if there is one, it is only a year, without a month or date. Secondly, information in the document may be abbreviated. Most often this concerns first names and patronymics. There can be both actual abbreviations, and not only from the beginning of the word (for example, the abbreviation “Alek-vich” is possible, and go figure, Aleksandrovich or Alekseevich was meant), as well as the indication of initials or the absence of a patronymic. Thirdly, the documents contain numerous errors made by the clerks, who were often either illiterate or wrote by ear. And finally, there could be errors made when filling out the fields by operators. Although multiple automatic and manual checks of the entered information were carried out during processing, errors are inevitable when processing huge volumes in a short time. In addition, it is often simply impossible to understand the scribe’s handwriting or the document has defects that do not allow the field to be filled out correctly. All these factors must be taken into account when forming requests.
The easiest option is to type all the words to search in a common line. But don't be surprised if extra records appear in the query results. The fact is that words from the general line are searched in all fields of the record, so if, for example, the word Alexandrov or Lvov is in the general line, records of both people with that surname and natives of these cities, called up from them or buried in them. It is better to enter words with multiple meanings in the query not in a general line, but in specialized fields. The set of these fields depends on the types of documents in which records are searched. And only those fields that are relevant for at least one of the types marked for search are shown for possible filling. Indeed, in the documents on prisoners of war, for example, it is never indicated where the person was conscripted from (the Nazis were not interested in this), in the lists of buried graves attached to passports, there is no information not only about the place of conscription, but also about the place of birth, etc. . By default, the search is carried out among all types of documents associated with images, except for “Memory Books”. This is due to the fact that records from the “Books of Memory”, as a rule, are shown first, and with a large number of them in the search results, it can be difficult to get to records from archival documents. Therefore, if records from the “Memory Books” need to be included in the search results, this must be indicated explicitly before making the first request with their participation. If in a query some words are specified in the general line, and some are specified in specialized fields, all elements of the request are taken into account, and words typed in the general line are searched in all fields of the record, and words typed in the fields are searched only in these fields of the record. The query result contains records that meet all search criteria.
When entering query words into the fields, you can select a search criterion. There are four of them: by exact value, by the beginning of the word, by exact phrase and full-text search. Different criteria give different results. For example, by entering the word “lieutenant” in the rank field, for the exact value we will get only lieutenants, for the value from the beginning of the field - lieutenants and lieutenants of various services, and for the remaining criteria options - all records that have the word “lieutenant” in this field , i.e. and ml. lieutenants, and art. lieutenants and lieutenant generals. Selecting a criterion from the beginning of the field is indispensable in cases where we want to obtain records not only with full names and patronymics, but also with abbreviations or initials. The criterion “by exact phrase” differs from full-text search in that it fixes a clear order of words, while in full-text search mode only the presence of words in the field is important, and their order is allowed to be arbitrary. At the same time, we must remember that any separator is a period, a comma, etc. — is perceived as a word boundary, i.e. an exact date, for example, 03/10/1942, is perceived as 3 words, so the criterion is always specified for the date by default exact phrase. After all, in full-text search mode the result would have included 10/03/1942. The modes of the exact phrase and from the beginning of the field can be artificially set in the general line. To indicate the exact phrase, the phrase must be placed in quotation marks, and to specify the beginning of the word, an asterisk must be placed in the text field. A complex option is also possible. For example, if you specify “Antip* E* G*” in the search bar in quotation marks, the result will include all people whose last name begins with Antip, First Name with E, and patronymic with G, i.e. Antipov Evgeniy Grigorievich, Antipkin Efim Grigorievich, Antipova Ekaterina Gerasimovna. etc. Hyphens in the request must be replaced with spaces.

Search options vary greatly depending on how common the information in the query is. If the surname is rare, it is often enough to indicate only it and look through the found records for what you are looking for. If rare name or patronymic, you can add them to the surname. But at the same time, you need to take into account the likelihood of them being written incorrectly in documents and used in queries possible options errors. Practice shows that many users find the records they need, despite errors in surnames, first names, and patronymics. The ability to view the document itself, from which the information was transferred to the database, and to clarify from it whether this is the person they are looking for (for example, based on information about relatives) is an undoubted value of the OBD. If the information entered into the query occurs frequently, then the result of the query will be a large number of records, and then you need to either view them in a row or enter them into the query Additional requirements. In the latter case, the number of records will decrease as a result, but at the same time, the necessary records may drop out of the result if they do not contain information on additional requirements.

How to remember a found entry?

First of all, you need to remember the entry number. It is highlighted in the upper left corner of the entry form. This number never changes, and by entering it into the search bar, you can easily find the entry. It is only necessary that the search area includes the type of document to which the document - the source of the record - belongs. Therefore, to search by record number, it is better if the checkboxes are checked for all types of documents. Remembering the record number is also useful because practice shows that users often forget the query with which they found the record. And then they write letters to the site developers: “I used to find the post, but now I can’t. Why did you delete it? And then it turns out that he is now using a query that is different from the one with which he found the record.

And secondly, you can put the entry in “Favorites”. But “Favorites” are fixed for a specific computer. You can't see it from another computer.

Which ones are the most common mistakes and discrepancies need to be taken into account in the query if records are not found?

Firstly, the error can be in any unstressed vowel. For example, the name Vladimir appears in documents in four spellings: in addition to the correct one, also Vlodimir, Vlodimer, Vladimer. A single consonant is also often found instead of a double consonant: Genady, Ipolitovich, etc. But you can’t make an automatic replacement when entering - after all, an illiterate scribe could also be encountered when drawing up documents. It would probably be worthwhile to enter two values ​​in such cases - both from the documents and the commonly used one, but firstly, they didn’t guess right away, and secondly, in this case the record would not be found by the exact value, which is often used in queries. There may be differences in the spelling of patronymics - Gennadievich and Gennadievich, Kuzmich and Kuzmich, Nikitovich and Nikitievich, etc. In addition, it is necessary to take into account possible mistakes, associated with handwritten text - it is often impossible to distinguish g and h, mo and lyu, n and p, e and s, even a and o are difficult to distinguish. And remember about distortion when recording “by ear”.

What to do if an error is detected in a recording?

Here it is very important to distinguish the cause of the error. If an error is made when transferring information from a document to a database, no matter due to poor legibility of the text or for some other reason, you must write to the support service - ELAR Corporation - via feedback on the website or directly at [email protected], indicating the entry number and the error made. If an error is made in the document itself, it is useless to write to ELAR: since the OBD is a bank of archival documents, the recording reproduces exactly what is indicated in the document. There is also no need to send additional information to ELAR - the exact date of birth and other data not reflected in the published document. However, it is possible to independently enter a clarification to the record. Here we return to the “Additional information” block, which we talked about when discussing the need to register on the site. On the screen form displaying information about a person, there is a button that says “Add additional. information" if there is no additional information for the entry, or "Add. information" if available. A user registered on the site can enter into this section any correcting or clarifying text, document images, or links to Internet resources. After the moderator has reviewed the entered information, it becomes publicly available. Thus, the official part of the site related to archival documents is separated from the additional part filled out by users. Well, if you need to officially correct inaccuracies in a document, for example, correct a surname so that a person is registered under the correct surname, you must contact directly the archive in which the document is stored, attaching supporting documents, and better yet, through the military registration and enlistment office. Then the archive, based on the documents presented, will create a new document about the changes, the document will go into the archive file and subsequently enter the OBD.

What can you do with documents?

If the load on the resource is too high, access to the personal archive and documents stored in it may be limited. Therefore, if information about a WWII participant is necessary for study or work, it is better to save it in a folder on your computer.

Each of the coordinates of the military path means a specific battle. On the left in the table are the dates of operations linked to coordinates on the map.

The military path is shown from the very beginning (from the place of conscription at the regional military registration and enlistment office) to the victorious end. The scale of the map can be increased so that the outlines of the villages where battles took place or near which our army followed will be visible. This effect allows you to examine the course of the war in detail. Below the map there are symbols. Based on them, we understand at what time the fighter we are looking for was in the hospital, received awards, where he was born, where he was drafted from, and much more. Also in the panel above the map you can add a higher part, which included the formation where the war hero served, and a lower part. All these nuances make it possible to recreate a more complete picture of the events of the Second World War.

The data for filling the Generalized Data Bank is taken from official archival documents stored in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and in the Military Memorial Center of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The main body of documents are reports from combat units about irretrievable losses, other archival documents clarifying losses (funerals, documents from hospitals and medical battalions, captured cards of Soviet prisoners of war, etc.), as well as passports of burials of Soviet soldiers and officers.

On the website you can find information about the rank of the deceased, the unit in which he served, the date and cause of death (killed, died of wounds, missing) and place of burial. Moreover, the site contains scanned copies of all processed source documents containing information about personalities. These documents make it possible to identify the fallen with great accuracy, as they often contain additional information, such as the names and addresses of relatives to whom the burials were sent.

Scanned and made available online as part of the project about 10 million sheets of archival documents and over 30 thousand passports of military graves . For the first time, you will be able to familiarize yourself with real documents and conduct your own search and research.

Today there is no such data bank in any country in the world. The implementation of such a project requires the construction of a multi-stage chain of collecting, checking, digitizing paper volumes amounting to millions of sheets, loading data into a powerful search system, and providing global multi-user access to documents. At the same time, all the people involved in its creation feel a special responsibility for the fact that every mistake made in the work can radically change the fate of a particular warrior. The case of the letters does not matter.
In each field, you can use the asterisk symbol, which indicates that any characters can follow from this place in the search text. For example, when specifying an expression in the Surname field, a search will be made for all surnames starting with - Ivanov, Ivanovsky, etc., when specifying - all surnames containing the substring - not only Ivanov, but also Selivanovsky, etc.
We advise you to always use the asterisk symbol at the end of the search text, this will increase the chance of finding entries with spelling variations.

In some lists, the names of the dead are written in Latin letters.
Some lists contain double full names (in parentheses or with a hyphen). To search such entries, use the asterisk symbol at the beginning and end of the search text.

The search result is displayed in a list of 20 people per page, the number of records found will be indicated above the list, and the number of pages of the list will be indicated below the list. To return to the list of found names, click on the “Return to search results” button at the bottom of the window.
