“National State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Health named after. P. F. Lesgaft, St. Petersburg" - the oldest physical education and educational institution in the world - founded in 1896 by the outstanding scientist Pyotr Frantsevich Lesgaft. From the first days of its existence, it was one of the centers of scientific, cultural and political life in Russia. Academicians I. P. Pavlov, A. F. Ioffe, A. A. Ukhtomsky, E. V. Tarle and many others taught here.

Pupils of P. F. Lesgaft. (A. N. Krestovnikov, E. A. Kotikova, L. I. Chulitskaya, etc.), as well as a number of outstanding figures in the physical culture and sports movement (G. A. Duperron, E. S. Saltykov, K. H. Grantyn and others) became the founders of the University’s scientific schools. Largely thanks to their efforts, the first textbooks for physical education universities were prepared (over the years of the university’s existence, more than 1,100 textbooks and teaching aids have been published).

The university also has priority in holding physical education parades. In 1935, the university was awarded the Order of Lenin for its enormous physical culture, sports and defense work.

During the Great Patriotic War, teachers and students of the institute trained over 100 thousand Red Army soldiers. 13 partisan detachments were created from university employees, which successfully operated in the Leningrad region. For this, the institute (the only civilian university in the country) was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. Three university employees (D. A. Balakhanov, K. I. Nazarova, V. A. Myagkov) became Heroes of the Soviet Union.

The university has glorious sports traditions. The institute's teacher, figure skater N.A. Panin-Kolomenkin became the first Russian Olympic champion at the 1908 Olympics. In total, students and staff of the University won 168 Olympic gold medals. Lesgaft members won more than 700 gold medals at the World and European Championships. Over 300 university graduates bear the title of Honored Master of Sports and more than 500 are Honored Trainers in various sports.

The university has trained more than 45 thousand specialists for Russia and neighboring countries, as well as countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe.

Since the founding of the university, intense and fruitful scientific work has been carried out. Scientific schools in anatomy, physiology, psychology, and biomechanics have been formed. About 200 employees were awarded government awards for scientific and labor achievements. Three (V.L. Komarov, A.A. Krasuskaya, L.A. Orbeli) became Heroes of Socialist Labor.

Information support for the educational and scientific processes of the university is constantly being improved. The University Library has a fully computerized cycle covering more than 740 thousand items.

The University has about 4,500 students, 250 graduate students, doctoral students and applicants, more than 570 teachers work, 73% of them have academic degrees and titles, 18% have a doctorate and professorships.

For many years, the university has been one of the leading institutions of higher professional education in Russia in the production of original textbooks and teaching aids. The international recognition of the University is its membership in numerous international organizations and associations, participation in scientific congresses under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and the Council of Europe.

The National State University of Physical Education, Sports and Health named after P. F. Lesgaft was founded in 1896 in St. Petersburg as Temporary courses for training teachers of physical education and games, organized by Pyotr Frantsevich Lesgaft.

History of University

Background of creation

Pre-revolutionary period

“Lesgaft Courses” or “Courses at the St. Petersburg Biological Laboratory” were founded by Professor P. F. Lesgaft with money donated to him on August 24, 1893. During the courses, anyone could study all existing natural sciences for free. A fairly large zoological and comparative anatomical museum was created at the course laboratory. In addition, the courses included large herbariums of the flora of northern Russia, the flora of the Caucasus and Siberia; eggs of birds from the north of Russia were collected; there were also mineralogical, geological and paleontological collections. There was a chemical laboratory and a number of rooms: physiological, histological, embryological and anatomical. Since 1896, the laboratory premises housed courses for teachers and leaders of physical education; later they began to be located in the adapted new laboratory building; they form part of the free higher school of social, biological and pedagogical sciences and popular courses. The first three departments of higher education are completely academic in nature and are designed for trained students. Each department has a 4-year course. The laboratory council has been publishing the scientific journal “News of the St. Petersburg Biological Laboratory” under the editorship of P.F. Lesgaft since 1896, since 1911 under the editorship of S.I. Metalnikov. Under Izvestia, translations or original books were published in the form of supplements.

Lesgafta is famous for the fact that such luminaries of science as the physicist Abram Fedorovich Ioffe, the physiologist and first Russian Nobel laureate Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, the physiologist Alexei Alekseevich Ukhtomsky, the great historian Evgeniy Viktorovich Tarle and many others taught within its walls.

Founder of the Institute Pyotr Frantsevich Lesgaft

The future biologist, anatomist, doctor and teacher was born on September 8, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-seven in St. Petersburg into a family of Germans who remained to live in Russia. His father, Peter Otto Lesgaft, was a jeweler and was a member of the Gold Arts Workshop. Being the owner of a small jewelry store, the father had a small income, which also affected the upbringing of the growing boy - from childhood his father taught him not only order, but also economy in everything. Peter's mother, Henrietta Adamovna, awakened in the boy a love of music from an early age. The upbringing of his parents and the family environment instilled in the boy such qualities as unselfishness, respect for work, and integrity - they became traits of his character and determined his entire future life.

Until the age of nine, the future scientist was home-schooled, and at the age of nine he was sent to the St. Petra. Studying was very easy for him, and at the same time he was a diligent student - he pored over books for a long time and conscientiously completed assignments.

At the age of 17, the young man graduated from school and developed an interest in medicine and chemistry. In the summer of the same year, he became a freshman at the Medical-Surgical Academy. In his third year at the institute, he became so interested in anatomy that he devoted himself to it completely.

In one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one, Lesgaft successfully passed all exams, receiving a doctor's degree. And Pyotr Frantsevich devoted his entire future life to medicine.

On December 11, one thousand nine hundred and nine, the heart of the great scientist stopped after a long illness. He was buried at the Volkovsky cemetery.
